None of the woman she has picked are insperational, maybe Beyonce but I dont like her faux feminism.

Also on this collage there is a certain voilent racist Geordie, a wag that's married to the guy with the hair transplant and a certain popstar who's surname ryhmes with whora who has lots of dodgy stories...

Basically it looks like she's shallow and just chosen dumb/ horrible models. I gave her a load of guardians to use but looks like she's got a trashy mag also.

Dolly Parton. Talented, business woman, nice hair (I suspect a wig maybe these days). Came from nothing. And she wrote Joleen. No competition

Did you know that Elvis wanted to cover
" I Will Always Love You" but the deal offered by Colonel Tom Parker was that if Elvis covered it Dolly had to hand over the publishing rights? It was on the basis that they assumed she'd be so flattered she'd agree.

Of course she didn't and made squillions out of Whitney Houston belting it out.

Haven't read the whole thread, but maybe the teacher is expecting this, reasonably so, and it's an exercise intended to examine and question what an 'inspirational' woman is.

BlueberryWafer · 03/11/2014 08:39

I just don't understand how you can feel it's acceptable to dictate to your daughter who she is permitted to find inspirational! It's entirely her prerogative to find celebrities inspirational. Besides, perhaps the whole point of the exercise is to then get them to challenge why they find them inspirational, which could in turn lead to them changing their minds. But they need to do that at their own accord, not because their mother says "they are not inspirational you must do it again".

Topaz25 · 03/11/2014 09:41

Maybe your DD isn't focusing on the dodgy stories about Rita Ora or the sexist 'Rita Whora' nickname she was given by trolls but instead on the fact that she's a successful number one artist. Ask her why she finds these women inspirational instead of judging her.

Topaz25 · 03/11/2014 10:13

TBH I find it ironic that you think you are inspiring your daughter by giving her guardians instead of trashy magazines to work from but you have clearly bought into the tabloid stories about these celebrities. Maybe your DD is not the only secretly reading trashy magazines? The only difference is she doesn't pretend she's too good to do so.

Cherl Cole has done a lot of philanthropy, she got malaria after handing out nets. She could of just chosen to play with her hair at home.

poolomoomon · 03/11/2014 16:48

OT but Cheryl Cole will always be known as that now won't she? She's supposed to be Fernandez-versini now (I think) but EVERYONE still uses Cole. I know I'll never get used to the new tongue twister name anyway...

She's not an inspiration. She went on a talent show and essentially got fast tracked stardom. She'd never have made it gigging, she can't even sing.

Then again your DD is only nine so I'd give her the benefit of the doubt but definitely talk to her about what it is she finds so inspirational about them and nudge her in the direction of truly inspirational women. Agreed on Emma Watson as someone pointed out. Lena Dunham is great, Madonna too. Love Hillary Clinton. Just thought about who'd have made it to my list at nine, for sure would've been popstars at that age. Teen years are better for this sort of thing.

Jill2015 · 03/11/2014 17:07

Committing a cardinal MN sin here of not having read the full thread, I've dipped in and out of it only.
I can understand a nine year old picking people such as the ones she picked. I'm not sure how a young child would find anyone inspirational, so I think it's understandable that they pick people they see on tv etc.
On a related note, I have to admit I shudder when I see / hear people describing the likes of Cheryl or any other celebrity, as 'role models'.
I was thinking about this, and for me, a so-called 'ordinary' person is often the person I think is inspirational, for example, someone who overcomes some adversity, in their lives, and throws their energy into raising funds for good causes, or promoting awareness of a condition, in order to help others.

PatriciaHolm · 03/11/2014 20:25

Cole didn't get malaria handing out nets, she got it on holiday in Tanzania after not taking anti-malarials!

toriuk · 03/11/2014 20:59

Still Cole , ora and halliwell are some of the most tallented female british musicians ever, they jointly hold the record for most numbers 1s.
