None of the woman she has picked are insperational, maybe Beyonce but I dont like her faux feminism.

Also on this collage there is a certain voilent racist Geordie, a wag that's married to the guy with the hair transplant and a certain popstar who's surname ryhmes with whora who has lots of dodgy stories...

Basically it looks like she's shallow and just chosen dumb/ horrible models. I gave her a load of guardians to use but looks like she's got a trashy mag also.

Aibu?

Oh oh oh… and WonderWoman, and Charlie's Angels.
(because I wanted to be them - still do Blush)

noddyholder · 02/11/2014 11:54

You can't decide who is inspirational to another person otherwise it would be your collage!

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 02/11/2014 11:57

Going to go throw the first bun here o.p. I think it would be a bit cruel to spill coffee on her work and effort, and ok these women may not inspire you but with a 9 year old girl that's different.
Rather than doing that destroying it can she not do another one as well and have a discussion about real inspirational women.
I agree with the comments about Adele and Katie Price.
and Horrible Histories. and of course there's Marie Curie, Emily Pankhurst,
Florence Nightingale to name just a few.
Also we've all got our own hero's haven't we. It doesn't have to be someone famous.

noblegiraffe · 02/11/2014 12:01

At the secondary school I work at the kids were similarly asked to do a collage of their inspirational role models. It was basically a wall full of pop stars and footballers. Reasons for being a role model include 'can sing well' and 'scores lots of goals'

TallulahTwinkletoes · 02/11/2014 12:02

Who is the popstar that rhymes with whora?

It's a sign of the times and doesn't mean she is ignorant or won't find the actual inspirational women, erm, inspirational. Grin

PurpleSwift · 02/11/2014 12:08

Rita ora

lougle · 02/11/2014 12:12

It's who they see in the media, isn't it?

Let's face it, we're all hypocrites. You want your child to grow up and get lots of high level qualifications so that they can go on to do a job that is in demand and financially stable. Then you get annoyed when they cite as Inspirational, someone who is worth £20,000,000 after just 12 years of work Confused

But of course, it isn't work to stand on a stage and sing....

It takes a lot of guts and determination to make it in the music industry. I wouldn't do it for all the tea in China -I value my privacy too much.

southeastastra · 02/11/2014 12:14

when i was 9 i would have chosen olivia newton john probably for her hot disco pants and skills on roller skates.

i think it's quite sweet to have pop stars etc as role models when you're little. doesn't mean you will not grow up to have more 'inspirational' ones when you understand a little more.

Nicename · 02/11/2014 12:17

I remember about that age doing one on heroes. Not quite the same thing. Is being rich and successful/ famous inspirational? Probably not in my book.

I wonder what the other children will hand in? If they had wanted people who had done good for humanity they'd have asked for scientists and humanitarians! I'd vote for the woman who invented fitted sheets myself...

southeastastra · 02/11/2014 12:19

oh yes heroes, would have also chosen wonderwoman for her cuffs that could repel bullets don't you know.

CarryOn90 · 02/11/2014 12:19

I don't understand how you can say you don't want your DD to focus on the 'visual' aspect of these women - but then say you won't choose any black women who don't have natural hair as you don't want somebody with a perm

i am utterly baffled as to how having a perm prevents you from being inspirational??

Gileswithachainsaw · 02/11/2014 12:27

Perhaps she thinks any adjustment to appearance is for the men folk??? Ergo not complying with her image of being an independent woman?

Ironically though, it just shows the ops ignore in the fact that's the only reason people can think to do it making her the least inspirational. Person out of the lot of them.

Couldn't be just became she felt like getting a perm Hmm

Gileswithachainsaw · 02/11/2014 12:28

Ignorance

FreudiansSlipper · 02/11/2014 12:29

I would have a long discussion with her, talk about her inspirations and find out why she feels these women are inspirational

I probably would have picked Olivia Newton John when I was 9 the difference is I was not bombarded with constant images and reports on her and all the other women that are now headline news and very little is about their talent (if they are) its about how they look and girls like Malala get far less press coverage that she is likely to see than Cheryl Cole

I would have no issue influencing ds he is influenced by all that is around him I want to be very much part of that

ExtraWickedDevil · 02/11/2014 12:32

I think at 9 inspirational means famous. Agree with southeast, at the same age (in 1978) I would have probably said O.N.J, Lesley Judd and Enid Blyton Grin
I would not have picked politicians, scientists, campaigners or people from history.
I would support her original choices, and talk to her about why she has picked them

TallulahTwinkletoes · 02/11/2014 12:54

Of course. Thank you purple. I live under a rock... Obviously.

I'd use this as an opportunity to tell her about women you find inspirational and why. See if it changes HER opinions for HER work... Grin

Balaboosta · 02/11/2014 13:07

I know my daughter isn't an extension of me, but I'm hardly going to recommend someone that has ethics against mine.

WTAF? You are a nightmare, a nightmare I tell you! Have you not taken anything from these replies? Condoleeza Rice doesn't have natural hair?! You need to have some black faces on there to make it look cool?! You put the super in superficial...

limitedperiodonly · 02/11/2014 13:39

When I was nine, my heroine was Angie Dickinson as Pepper Anderson from Police Woman.

"Police Woman caused a surge of applications for employment from women to police departments around the United States; journalists who have in recent years examined the inspiration for long-term female law enforcement officials to adopt this vocation as their own have been surprised by how often Dickinson's Police Woman has been referenced."

"Dickinson and Police Woman proved that a female lead could carry an hour-long television series, paving the way for several female-starring, hour-long TV series during the 1970s and 1980s, such as Charlie's Angels, Wonder Woman, The Bionic Woman and Cagney and Lacey. In 1987, the Los Angeles Police Department awarded Dickinson an honorary doctorate, which led her to quip, "Now you can call me Doctor Pepper.""

That's pretty inspiring. However I liked her because she was pretty. I never became a police officer because I didn't like the hat and the flat, black lace-ups.

QueenTilly · 02/11/2014 14:03

Condoleeza Rice isn't a role model because of her hair. Oh. My. Fucking. Goodness.

Wow, black women seriously can't win, can they? It is her hair. She can do what she bloody well likes with it.

Quote from wikipedia: "Rice was the first female African-American secretary of state, as well as the second African American secretary of state (after Colin Powell), and the second female secretary of state (after Madeleine Albright)."

But hey, none of that matters, because some other woman disapproves of how she does her hair. And you call your daughter shallow. She's nine. What's your excuse?

QueenTilly · 02/11/2014 14:03

*Condoleezza

Smilesandpiles · 02/11/2014 14:13

I know this was at the begining of the thread:

They've dragged fame, money and a career from absolutely nothing. Clever.

And they've done this despite criminal records, lack of talent or intelligence.

Impressive, really.

LMFAO

Smilesandpiles · 02/11/2014 14:14

SO true and so funny.

Thanks for the giggle.

ChippingInAutumnLover · 02/11/2014 14:15

This has to come with a handle right?

I mean, apart from anything else (and there's plenty!) I gave her a load of guardians to use but looks like she's got a trashy mag also

Hmm

I will ask the 9yo later and see what she says.

TallulahTwinkletoes · 02/11/2014 14:18

Has anybody picked up on op saying she wanted women to be picked on something other than looks and her very next comment was about rejecting condoleeza because of how her hair looks???

Nicename · 02/11/2014 14:25

Dolly Parton. Talented, business woman, nice hair (I suspect a wig maybe these days). Came from nothing. And she wrote Joleen. No competition.
