None of the woman she has picked are insperational, maybe Beyonce but I dont like her faux feminism.

Also on this collage there is a certain voilent racist Geordie, a wag that's married to the guy with the hair transplant and a certain popstar who's surname ryhmes with whora who has lots of dodgy stories...

Basically it looks like she's shallow and just chosen dumb/ horrible models. I gave her a load of guardians to use but looks like she's got a trashy mag also.

Aibu?

No - she is only 9 - don't think I would have picked differently at 9 - would probably have been pop stars etc too - she is her own person with her own views - am sure my mum would have been disappointed at certain things I did or thought when growing up but she agreed I turned out well in the end. I think she should be allowed to express herself - it is not as if she really knows what the Geordie did for example - she is choosing them on the basis of what she knows which may seem shallow but I don't think that is unusual at that age. I think I started to get deeper in my early teens.

upyourninja · 02/11/2014 07:54

Well, YWBU to ruin it, but - have you thought about suggesting that you and DD spend a bit of time looking at Mighty Girl and other places to come up with a second option? Even make a second collage?

Hilary Clinton? Tethered to a cheating husband but a perfectly serious contender for the US presidency later on. Also Condoleezza Rice, a black female in high government office - she must have worked her arse off and ignored a hell of a lot of prejudice to get there.
Thatcher, if you can get past her politics Wink
Malala, definitely.

I'm afraid ywbu to destroy her work, tempting as it might be....

Fedupofplaystation · 02/11/2014 08:08

How about Emma Watson? Promoted education for girls, appointed as UN women good will ambassador and helped launch he for she campaign.

superstarheartbreaker · 02/11/2014 08:14

I know what you mean op but tbh id let her choose then mahbe throw in a more worthy example like Margaret Thatcher! Grin

KnackeredMuchly · 02/11/2014 08:18

It's not her fault, she's not been exposed to real inspirational women by your own admission so how would you expect her to think of them?

Why don't you make your own project and share it with her, introduce a few new faces. Try and talk to her about the news more and current affairs.

Who knows, perhaps that's why the teacher set the project, so parents can see what hideous women are aspirational to 9 year olds and encourage you to make a change! Wink

DinnaeKnowShitFromClay · 02/11/2014 08:18

All female war correspondents are my heroines. What about these women that are out their fighting Ebola? Sarah Payne?

Fedupofplaystation · 02/11/2014 08:22

I've a feeling it'll be pretty obvious whose parents have 'helped' the children with this project.

PurpleSwift · 02/11/2014 08:22

She's 9!? YABU

KiaOraOAotearoa · 02/11/2014 08:24

Ermmm, no, she'll just have to re-do it. After a bit of a conversation about what inspirational women actually do.
If she can't give me a valid reason/good explanation/stand her point of view, she does as I say. This one would definitely be a re-do.

lougle · 02/11/2014 08:32

Cheryl Cole is inspirational, imo. yes, she's done things to be ashamed of, but she's a pleasant woman* who has made a career for herself rather than following the path that kids in her area did.

*I don't think you can pull off something like x factor without showing your real self and she's always polite to contestants.

PurpleSwift · 02/11/2014 08:33

Surely it's a personal thing? You can't dictate who inspires your child really, can you?

Ohanarama · 02/11/2014 08:43

I think the wag in question (the one married to the hair transplant) has done lots charity work for disabled children as she had a disabled sister.

KiaOraOAotearoa · 02/11/2014 08:44

Purple, she is a child doing her homework. She's 9, not 3 and thinking peppa pig is real. If we don't teach them what inspirational is, who is?

PurpleSwift · 02/11/2014 08:45

I don't think inspiration is something that can be taught.

MarshaBrady · 02/11/2014 08:46

Don't ruin it but do another one together.

madsadbad · 02/11/2014 08:46

She is 9, leave her homework alone and stop trying to force your views on her to change it now.
However this has opened up a chance to separately have a discussion about inspirational other people not just the ones we see in the news every day, what inspiration is, what it means to her etc.
The way you describe people in your opening post is quite shitty.

Mumraathenoisylion · 02/11/2014 08:48

Zooey Deschanel?

SanityClause · 02/11/2014 08:49

Why don't you do a collage of your own, then you can talk to her about the women you think are inspirational.

Aeroflotgirl · 02/11/2014 08:50

Bonded I can understand where your coming from, and I totally agree with you, but they are women who she recignised and find inspirational in a loose kind of way. Throw her a couple, I. E Malala and Katie Piper etc to put in there so it doesent look to shallow.

Aeroflotgirl · 02/11/2014 08:51

Good idea sainty Smile

Petallic · 02/11/2014 08:52

Can you show her this website www.amightygirl.com which primarily is a bookshop but all their books are designed to be inspirational to girls and plenty of amazing women. Their Facebook is better as if has lots of photos/short bios of amazing women and girls & their stories. I'm sure she could find some other women to add to her list

CalamitouslyWrong · 02/11/2014 08:54

I think your mistake was not in talking her through it with the guardians you'd issued her with (although, even then, the output of the guardian can be utterly depressing).

I'd've steered away from pop stars and actors entirely, tbh. What about jk Rowling or Jacqueline Wilson (both of whom she might have heard of)?

limitedperiodonly · 02/11/2014 08:55

I gave her a load of guardians to use but looks like she's got a trashy mag also

Where did she get this dreadful thing? Do you think she might have a dealer?
