I always thought we had to have lighter mornings for farmers, etc in the northern part of the country.

YABU. I hate dark mornings. There's so little daylight in winter that if we stayed on summer time I'd have to go to work in the dark as well as coming home in the dark, and I wouldn't see daylight all week. At least on GMT I get some light as I go to the office!

Fundamentally the problem is that we all live too far north and there isn't enough light to go round at this time of year!
