to think it's too bloody dark too early and Scotland should have its own timezone if they want lighter mornings?

Just that really.

OP posts:

I don't like the dark evenings, but I HATE the dark mornings. I'd rather be getting up in the light (or at least the dawn), and switch the lights on late afternoon, than get out of bed in the dark for even more weeks of the year, for the sake of another hour of half-hearted, grudging winter daylight in the afternoon.

OOAOML · 27/10/2014 21:50

Seasonally adjusted school days sounds good, although would have knock on effects for workplaces. There are going to be some trials of banning traffic at start and end of the school day here. Wouldn't have made a difference for my school as the main traffic dangers were halfway home.

Whatever we do with the clocks though, we will be on limited daylight soon anyway. Wish we had better street lighting for avoiding dog poo though - challenging just now especially with so many leaves on the ground.

ErrolTheDragon · 27/10/2014 22:17

How on earth can you ban traffic at the start and end of school days? Confused

OOAOML · 27/10/2014 22:36

Limited time road closures. Only works on certain roads obviously, but we're in a city so there are alternative routes.

wobblyweebles · 28/10/2014 12:25

Also, US states have two legislatures each - state and federal. Which is possibly irrelevant

I don't understand this... in what way does a state have a federal legislature?

Nicename · 28/10/2014 12:29

I t up very early and get home late. I am part mole these days.

chrome100 · 28/10/2014 14:25

But in the depths of winter it's dark in the morning AND in the evening (at least it is here in Yorkshire) so really, it doesn't make a difference what time it is.

taxi4ballet · 28/10/2014 19:32

Er - why don't we just keep the clocks on GMT all year round, and then leave it to each region/area as to when the school day starts and ends. Businesses and shops could open and close when they want, and not have to stick to the 9-5.30 or whatever.

hackmum · 28/10/2014 20:20

I'm sure this argument has been raging since I was a child (so well over 40 years) and I've never quite understood it. The amount of daylight is finite - in mid-December, you get eight hours of daylight, 8am to 4pm (roughly) and whichever way you cut it, it's going to piss off somebody. At this time of year you have a choice between lighter evenings and lighter mornings - I can't see it matters that much either way.

ssd · 28/10/2014 20:28

I must live in a real bubble, I haven't noticed much change so far, apart from tonight when it was dark very early (I live in Scotland)

LovleyRitaMeterMaid · 28/10/2014 22:33

To conclude, it's dark. It's shit. It's winter in the UK.

NinjaLeprechaun · 28/10/2014 23:57

I don't understand this... in what way does a state have a federal legislature?
I'm not sure exactly what my point was there, to be honest. Confused
I was responding to this: "Individual US states only have one legislature, and are distinctly more culturally and politically integrated (and homogenous) than the UK." and was trying to point out that US states are subject both to state legislature and federal legislature. I still don't know what it has to do with time zones though.

wobblyweebles · 29/10/2014 00:52

LOL Ninja, I was wondering if I'd missed something :-)

Roonerspism · 29/10/2014 06:33

I'm in Scotland and I agree with you. I hate the shorter days. The mornings are crap anyway, so why not make them really crap, and let it stay lighter till later.

I have always been told its due to the "farmers in Scotland" wanting lighter mornings but that makes no sense. They aren't required at school by 9am or whatever so can get up when they like!

And by the way, Scotland can't agree on anything right now so no point asking us to sort it out for ourselves!

PigletJohn · 29/10/2014 09:33

It's horrible to have to get up and go to work in the dark. Worse I think than coming home in the dark.

NoMarymary · 29/10/2014 09:46

Totally pees me off. Much prefer lighter (ish) evenings.

Mrsjayy · 29/10/2014 09:50

Maybe the tiny part of the south of Britain should have their own timezone and let the rest of us be meh we all hate the dark winter it depresses us all I hate the clock change but I wouldn't blame a whole country for my pissed offness

BackOnlyBriefly · 29/10/2014 16:48

I don't think anyone was seriously 'blaming' Scotland.

I don't think the timezones idea would work though. Imagine living on the edge of the zone so that your house was on a different time to your work.

Also we can't have different starting times for schools because that would be tricky too for people with jobs and kids in school.
