To ask how to pronounce croissant without sounding like a twat?

Hoppinggreen · 04/10/2014 08:37

So how do you do it?
I know how to say it properly as I speak reasonable French but I wonder if I sound like a pretentious twat. With close friends and family I get round it by doing it in an over exaggerated ironic way but how would I order one when out or how would I offer one to a casual acquaintance?
And as for Pain au Chocolat - I daren't even go there!!

Cwosson

Pan o choc-o-lah

Exactly the same as if you were saying it in France. Like Bureau De Change.

MajesticWhine · 04/10/2014 08:41

I have always struggled with this.
I think I say something like cross-awn.

ChippingInLatteLover · 04/10/2014 08:43

Just say it properly - anyone who doesn't like it can naff off :)

futterwacken · 04/10/2014 08:44

It can’t be done, everyone sounds like a twat. I say something like cwas-ont

dollius · 04/10/2014 08:44

Crusson

dollius · 04/10/2014 08:44

Pan o shock o la

Springheeled · 04/10/2014 08:45

Oh thanks for this thread, I need it settled! People say 'cwassont' but I always thought it was 'crosson' or 'cwosson' and hearing the 'a' sound in it always seemed wrong... I speak a tiny bit of crap French so have no idea

Branleuse · 04/10/2014 08:47

cwasson.

it doesn't make you sound like a twat, unless you overdo it. I think france is close enough, and enough people know what a croissant is and how its pronounced, that it doesnt sound pretentious.

RobotLover68 · 04/10/2014 08:47

pan o shock-o-lah

OwlWearingSunglasses · 04/10/2014 08:48

Don't say it like a woman I used to work with. She would say

Crow-iss-ant - Payne ow chocolate - and the best one was her car was a

Pee-urge-ott. I think she thought she was being clever but it made her look foolish.

Branleuse · 04/10/2014 08:48

in fact i think if you used english pronunciation of it phonetically, youd sound a bit del boy trotter

Charitybelle · 04/10/2014 08:49

I also feel like a know saying it properly, but the alternative is worse. When I hear people say 'crossont' it makes me cringe a little inside.

Charitybelle · 04/10/2014 08:49

'Knob'!

Seafoam · 04/10/2014 08:49

My dh still pronounces it pain oh chocolate. despite my attempts to get him to see sense- so rest assured op, you can't sound anymore stupid than that.

EvilEmperorZurg · 04/10/2014 08:53

Cross-ant. and when you're in France you can faff about with your W sounds in the middle of it Hmm.....

Hoppinggreen · 04/10/2014 08:54

I speak Spanish too and have the same issue buyng Chorizo!!!
Greg Wallace puts a "t" in the middle and I want to kill him ( for many reasons but mainly that)

MollyBdenum · 04/10/2014 08:56

My mum is French. When I'm speaking French, I pronounce it properly. When I'm speaking English, I say "cwass" at the start, but say the "ant" at the end the same as I would in French.

I have been known to say pan oh shockohlah but normally just use a slightly anglicised version of French pronunciation, like an English non-native fluent French speaker who can't quite get the vowels spot on.

Fishstix · 04/10/2014 08:57

Cwa sonn.
Pan oh choc-oh-la.
According to French DH.

Hoppinggreen · 04/10/2014 09:03

I know how to say it Fishstix but being English in England I probably sound like a twat

OP posts:
Stupidhead · 04/10/2014 09:03

I say 'cwoss-ont' but I can't pronounce my 'r's Grin

toadhillflax · 04/10/2014 09:18

Is the choh-rit-zo thing a regional thing though? I learnt Spanish in Madrid where is was definitely choh-reeth-tho, but so many people say choh-rit-zo, I assumed perhaps it varied by region

Bouttimeforwine · 04/10/2014 09:27

So how do you pronounce chipotle sauce in Subway? I always said chip ot al but heard it on an American show as chip oh lay. When I said it that way in Subway they looked at me gone out.

Bouttimeforwine · 04/10/2014 09:28

Chip ot ul sorry not al

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 04/10/2014 09:30

Croissant - Quah sont (softest t I can get away with)
Chipotle - Chip Ot Lay

Another.....

Chorizo - Chor Eet Zo (even though I know it should be Chor Eee Tho)

WorraLiberty · 04/10/2014 09:31

Unless you're actually French, you'll always sound like a twat when ordering croissants I'm afraid Grin
