Voluptuous FIL sits TOPLESS when we visit :(

AIMU to expect FIL to put a top on during visits. I realise its his home and people can generally do what they like within their own 4 walls.

However I just find I am being increasingly struck dumb and I am unable to meet his gaze or even look at him. He is rather generously proportioned and sits at the head of the table like some buddha.

I have a sense he knows my feelings about this and knows how uncomfortable it makes me feel as several years ago there was a conversation about being half dressed in different situations - eg ... walking down street, in own home, in garden, on beach etc. This was before he took to being half undressed when at home.

DH has no problem with it although he does not do this himself. He also does not feel comfortable broaching the subject with his father.

Perhaps I am turning into a prude in my old age and just need to chillax.

Eh YANBU!

grovel · 18/01/2014 17:44

That is gross. YANBU.

pussycatdoll · 18/01/2014 17:46

Ew!
Especially gross at dinner

Fifyfomum · 18/01/2014 17:46

YABU. It's just part of the human body, nothing to get upset about

PollyPumpkins · 18/01/2014 17:47

Thanks Daw & Grovel .... I wished it did not bother me. DH said I wasn't very sociable when we last visited and when I explained why he just did not get it :(

I wouldn't want to have to look at his moobs, yuk!

Human body or not, it's grim.

theladyrainy · 18/01/2014 17:48

Ewww that's horrible.

PollyPumpkins · 18/01/2014 17:48

I kind of know what you mean Fify ... but I feel really uncomfortable with it ... perhaps its because its at the kitchen table near food and drink.

Think yourself lucky, SFIL used to answer the door with no bottoms on Shock

DesperatelySeekingSedatives · 18/01/2014 17:49

YANBU my 2 year old son currently loves to strip off especially but not only around the house. Even he has to wear something at the dinner table Hmm

PollyPumpkins · 18/01/2014 17:50

I also think it could be to do with power & control ;)

PollyPumpkins · 18/01/2014 17:51

OMG Wanda .... 0^0 .... eyes are watering at the thought of that!!

Maybe you should also sit topless at the other end of the table?...isn't there some social etiquette that says 'thou shalt not sit in the buff at the dining table'? Maybe you should offer to measure him up for a bra to encase his manboobs?

YANBU - lawn mowing in full heat of a summers day...there is good reason for it. In the middle of winter at dinner time. Slightly odd.

DSS - Don't you just love their strips ... its a right of passage for littlies to strip off, no matter where they are lol

YouStayClassySanDiego · 18/01/2014 17:53

If he knows you find it uncomfortable then he's being a twat in enjoying your unease.

I'd find it unnerving to be honest.

Catypillar · 18/01/2014 17:55

Maybe he needs to look at the intervention threads on S+B?

feelinlucky · 18/01/2014 17:55

My ex's father enjoyed sitting in his dressing gown with his legs open and no underwear! Beat that!!!!

PollyPumpkins · 18/01/2014 17:56

BWP - crumbs if my babies came out there wouldn't be room for moobs ... now theres a plan in the making lol

Euphemia ... that sounds simple enough for reasonable people ... FIL is not one of them ... unfortunately .

Caitlin17 · 18/01/2014 17:57

Ugh. It wouldn't matter what he looked like. It's wrong at the dining table.

Theoldhag · 18/01/2014 17:58

It's just a body! I understand that you find it not so pleasent for your eyeballs (bleach) but if he is his own home then it is up to him. Just take some dark glasses and stick an image of a covered torso on the insides of the lenses

insearchoftheFlumFlumTree · 18/01/2014 17:58

Not OK. My FIL likes to sit around in far too short shorts (even in the middle of winter), leaving nothing to the imagination, and I really struggle with this.

PollyPumpkins · 18/01/2014 18:00

San Diego ... he is a true chauvinist ... DH acknowledges thats much. FIL is kinda of one of those people who does things for effect.

FeelinLucky ... yuckity yuck ... and no I can't beat that lol

You lot have cheered me up no end :) Thanks !!

Ewwww no nice at all, that is not polite, unless he has ripped abs

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 18/01/2014 18:01

I think you should stop visiting. If that's what he wants to do in his own home - fine but you don't have to look.

FWIW my BIL is a bit like this though to be fair at least he's in his early 30s and relatively fit. Smile
