I'm loving Chris Evans and think he has redeemed himself from past awful behaviour BUT I can't help being annoyed that he has already started his son's future career on radio. I bet he's a lovely lad but...sorry, Chris...I think this is a cheek!

That's a good idea Kim. The current auction system excludes about 99% of the population.

aliciagardner · 16/08/2013 09:33

But Kim, pp said that of the 3.8 million that was raised by the breakfast show, it was only 80-odd K that was raised by the text donations. The charity donation raises a lot. I don't quite follow your 'excluding' argument. Some people have a lot of money, some don't. It happens all the time. As a life lesson, don't we just have to learn to accept it if we can't afford something, and participate in the ways we can afford (like texting - there is this option provided on the show!).

aliciagardner · 16/08/2013 09:35

Excuse - it's the indignant Mary Whitehouse-ness type comments that I find odd. There is always the option to turn off the tv or radio if something isn't to our tastes. After all, not everyone can like everything.

DreamingofSummer · 16/08/2013 09:53

I totally agree with Kim. All of us would like a chance to have one of those experiences but because of the auction format are totally unable to do so. A raffle or lottery would be much fairer and we wouldn't have to put up with Evans/Wogan fawning over the mega-rich.

SirChenjin · 16/08/2013 09:56

Why should we keep turning off our radio or TVs? We pay our licence fees to watch and listen, not stare at an empty screen. If there are elements of a show that listeners find irritating (and I'm willing to bet that there are a fair few, if you extrapolate the opinions on here) then it's up to the producers to do something about it rather than listeners having to switch on and off all the time.

IslaValargeone · 16/08/2013 10:00

I find the car talk particularly irritating.
It seems to dominate the show, if it's not his driving days for CIN it's car fest or Eddie Jordan interviews or James Martin and his bloody cars.

SirChenjin - you can't please everyone all the time though, can you? I hate top gear, but millions if people all over the world love it. I hate football, cricket, etc but bbc show it. Different strokes...

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 16/08/2013 10:39

sirChenjin you are out voted 9 million to one. What should the Bbc do about it?

ExcuseTypos · 16/08/2013 10:44

Saggy there are 60 million people in the country.

Therefore 51 million don't listen to Chris Evans.

IslaValargeone · 16/08/2013 10:49

I can't be the only one of the 9 million who do have him on in the mornings do so because Radio 1 is for ..(well I'm not quite sure without being offensive) Radio 4 requires the abilty to be able to pay attention rather than be distracted by normal family breakfast activity and
I can't tolerate the ads that commercial stations have.

Bilpbip · 16/08/2013 10:49

I love Chris Evans, way more entertaining than Terry Wogan. And I say that as a fellow Irishperson.

Its Chris Moyles I can't stand

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 16/08/2013 11:31

Yes that's true. But there are 7590 odd other radio stations. It's hardly a hardship or an insult to license payers if some of those listeners don't like a particular DJ. Between digital and Internet radio, the choice is unlimited.
I personally can't stand Jeremy Vine, but I don't go all 'Mary Whitehouse' about it. I just press the button and switch to Dream 100 for a couple of hours!

Radio 6 all the way. Cerys Matthews is a joy as is Hughie from FLC. Real Muso's who speak knowledgeably and educate me in an imperceptible manner whilst playing fine music.

antimatter · 16/08/2013 12:46

re: radio2 stats - this is interesting...

Chris Evans' Radio 2 morning show lost about 50,000 listeners quarter on quarter, falling slightly to 9.75 million, but he remains the UK's most popular breakfast DJ. Radio 2 raised its overall average weekly audience by 1.1% to 15.4 million, thanks to a good response to presenters such as Graham Norton and Dermot O'Leary.

that means that nearly 6 million of R2 listeners who listen to other programs don't listen to theirBreakfast show (well I am one of them)

ExcuseTypos · 16/08/2013 12:55

Yes antimatter it's ironic that Chris Evans was supposed to increase figures for the Radio 2 breakfast show when they actually fell when he took over.

mrslyman · 16/08/2013 13:03

Just regarding the auction, some of you would rather a charity didn't extract £3.5 million from rich people because you feel a bit left out?

Your arguments basically amount to the BBC restricting their fundraising activities so that those of lower incomes can donate a higher proportion of their incomes. Bonkers.

Ilovemyself · 16/08/2013 13:13

Well said mrslyman

antimatter · 16/08/2013 13:16

I wonder how much money BBC spends to get various amounts of money form donations?

Isn't it a nice way of PR to show how caring they are whilst the whole operation perhaps is not really making any money if you add al lthe costs?
(you can flame me for being cynical but bbc has lost a lot in my eyes with various blunders in the last few years)

DinoSnores · 16/08/2013 13:21

"Yes antimatter it's ironic that Chris Evans was supposed to increase figures for the Radio 2 breakfast show when they actually fell when he took over."

He did increase the figures. Hmm

Terry Wogan's top listening figure was 8.1million.

Chris in May 2013 had 9.8 million listeners at breakfast up from 9.2m last year and 9.5 the previous quarter.

Quenelle · 16/08/2013 13:32

I don't mind Noah being used in his show but if I were his wife I would. Too much sharing of their private lives IMO.

I rarely listen now, only when the Today programme is too dull. I got bored of the constant publicity for all the festivals they seem to be having these days.

I have no problem with the CIN auction or CE's extravagant car habit though. I like to see people with money spending it or giving it away rather than just hanging onto it and counting it.

And I completely agree with Kim147 at least he's not Steve bloody Wright. That show is just appalling.

mrslyman · 16/08/2013 13:34

Auction prizes will be donated by companies and private individuals. If you want to check what happens with the money donated fully audited Children in Need accounts are available here

antimatter · 16/08/2013 13:36

and Evans got "growing" number of listeners, because R1 target changed after Moyles left - AVERAGE used to be 32

now they are aiming at 14-29, so those who feel too old for music on R1 are likely to switch over to R2. I guess in long run R2 will loose listeners who will grow tired of it's DJ's antics
