I'm loving Chris Evans and think he has redeemed himself from past awful behaviour BUT I can't help being annoyed that he has already started his son's future career on radio. I bet he's a lovely lad but...sorry, Chris...I think this is a cheek!

I don't know if he's a decent guy or not, but good god he's obnoxious.

VivaLeBeaver · 14/08/2013 06:41

I think his new baby is called Theo?

LoveBeingItsABoy · 14/08/2013 06:54

Yes his daughter is in his (and her brothers lifes), yes he used to be a giant knob, and yes the cin auction was a bit cringe, And he now seems to be a very committed family man, seems to relish in his children and maybe learnt from his previous mistakes. If his daughter is happy to forgive then maybe strangers should too?

YouStayClassySanDiego · 14/08/2013 07:02

I love him and the show.

The kids slot where they do something for the first time is brilliant, especially at Christmas.

He's fab at what he does.

His second son is called Eli by the way.

Retropear · 14/08/2013 07:10

I like him for the reason others have said.

His enthusiasm is infectious and I get the impression however rich he is he is grounded in a funny way and just wants to be a normal family man.

Yes he ballsed up when younger(didn't we all in some way) but he has clearly learnt and grown from it.

Graham Norton is my fave though.Anybody that can me me laugh in the car on the way into town with 3 kids shoe buying is a genius imvh. He could make an ingrowing toenail seem funny.

YouStayClassySanDiego · 14/08/2013 07:38

Retro love Graham Norton too, his radio show is terrific.

laineylou · 14/08/2013 07:39

I always listen to him in the morning. I think Lyn stops it getting too bum-licky. She brings the right note of scepticism.

But I also hate the CIN auction...or more specifically loathe it when the winners take up radio time of here we are driving off oh we've had a super time at a hotel, we're doing
stuff you poor people won't ever be able to do.

I'm still cringing from the most recent one...here's our first LADY driver and why are you driving? Oh my husband lost his licence so he's not allowed to drive the supercar. He didn't ask the men why they were bloody well driving??? I always have to turn it off on those days.

And ooh here's Brian and Mary they're here to do the weather because they paid 50k...then they're off to somewhere else fabulous etc etc. I'm pleased they've coughed up but charitable donations should be a private thing.
Part of me also thinks they aren't paying enough tax if they can afford to piss it up the wall like that...then we wouldn't need so much for charity. That may just be envy though.

Thank you...I feel better for that!

SirChenjin · 14/08/2013 07:52

I couldn't agree more Lainey - I switch off for large portions of the show just before CIN, can't stand the auction thing they do

LessMissAbs · 14/08/2013 08:54

YANBU. Aside from the fact that I cannot understand how someone with such a high pitched nasal voice which hurts the ears has made a career out of radio, I really hate nepotism of any kind. I apply the 'how is it benefitting me test'. If someone has genuine talent, it benefits me as I get pleasure out of their performance. If its just someone's son or daughter or girlfriend, it benefits only that person.

Why should I support that?

InWithTheITCrowd · 14/08/2013 09:13

But he's a child? It's hardly "getting him on the radio" - it's using him as material for the show.
Like i said, radio presenting 101 - all presenters use quotes and clips and anecdotes from their families. How else are they going to fill so much air time every day/week?
People like to be "invited in" - that's why stations employ personality presenters and don't just automate it!

FriendlyLadybird · 14/08/2013 09:29

I think YABU to assume this is rampant nepotism. He's not starting his son's future career in radio FFS! He is using him, which I object to in principle. However, an hour or so messing around in a studio prerecording a few lines is just fun for the boy, so it's hardly going to damage him.

northernlurker · 14/08/2013 09:32

Plenty of sanctimony on this thread. You can donate to CIN whatever your means. Nobody is excluded from that. In our society there are some very rich people. If they choose to spend some of that money on a charity auction then why resent that? It gets spent on charity or on themselves. So we get to hear about the super cars and monaco etc? Watch Grand Designs and you see somebody spending £30 grand on a bathroom, watch Top Gear and they cover cars which cost what I'll earn in my life. That's how it goes in the media.

ZolaBuddleia · 14/08/2013 09:41

Mynewmoniker, do you have a son who wants to work in radio?

Your choice of phrase is very odd, "wangled him a spot on the radio", like it's a 50 year old man who has had his adult son placed in the junior ranks of a firm in the City.

The child is about 4, he has been used to make a voice over. Chris Evans is using something he has access to to make a feature for his show. Russell Brand used to do features with Noel Gallagher.

Are artists 'wangling their kids into art' by painting them? Are farmers unfairly advantaging their kids by 'getting them' lamb feeding work?

I don't mind him.
He's still got bucket loads of arrogance and is as smug as you can get but he's also good at what he does. A bit like Parkinson who is arrogant and smug beyond measure but was quite good on TV.
I ignore the fact that he is a twunt because he makes my commute bearable.
HOWEVER... As much as Noah is most probably adorable to his parents, Chris has not grasped the fact that other parents ( or indeed the whole listening public) may not share such strong sentiments.

Pigsmummy · 14/08/2013 10:00

It always make me laugh how peope think they know someone by just listening to them on the radio or watching someone on TV, I would rather keep an open mind until I got to know them or heard from someone else who has. Can't you just think of them as an entertainer that you don't personally know? Rather than give the character assassinations? Chris Evans doesn't know you lot but I bet that he is not currently slagging you or your job off.

As for the auction prize I have arranged for expensive items and once a GP experience (not as lavish as the Children in need one though) to be available for charity auctions. Without these type of events charities wouldn't be able to raise the funds that they do and more will go under, like the DLS. Should they stop this just so people don't get jealous that they can't afford to bid on the high end items?

"Thanks Mr Coulthard for the generous offer of the use of your house but some of our listeners will get jealous so we will turn both you and the thousands of pounds that it will generate for our charity down on this occasion". Said no one, ever

Damnautocorrect · 14/08/2013 10:11

Sometimes my ds plays being daddy at work when we pop in. Surely it's similar?

MrsLouisTheroux · 14/08/2013 10:14

We know the character portrayed by Chris Evans over the radio. this character is based entirely on his own personality. Are you saying that when we communicate within our jobs we leave our entire personality behind?

I teach and I'm sure my students have opinions about me. They see one side of me, the public persona which is a big part of me and my personality.

We are all entitled to like/ dislike what we know about him.

Are we not allowed to say that his radio persona is unpleasant and shouldn't be given a prime slot on one of the country's most popular radio stations?

I don't think I know him, I do think his radio show has got steadily worse over time, with the clips of his son being irritating and inappropriate comments to the women on the show which make me cringe.

SarahBumBarer · 14/08/2013 10:37

Gah - when his wife was just about to give birth to his latest he had a load of women on the radio with the same due date giving updates about what was happening to them. One of them had contractions which went away and he mocked her saying "that doesn't happen".

Errrr - you've had how many kids? Such a know it all nothing.

Wise men have something to say, fools have to say something. He says rather a lot.

antimatter · 14/08/2013 10:51

can anyone remember, in the SUmmer 2011 on his breakfast show was sports commentator Chris bullied a lot?
That's when I started listening to him.

His son s was on the radio already and what I hated was his misogynistic comments

Longdistance · 14/08/2013 11:31

He's definitely got a face for radio.

Kaluki · 14/08/2013 11:49

His ex told him to stay away from his dd when she was a baby which (rightly or wrongly) he did. They both agreed it would be better for her to leave her with her Mum as he was too immature to be a father.

He has been an idiot in the past like a lot of us and tbh with that sort of money at that age I am sure I would have been a complete twat as well!
But good on him for turning it all around. He is the first person to admit he has made mistakes but now he is being a good dad to Noah and Eli and is trying to make up for not seeing Jade (his dd) when she was young.
Like him or not his show is very very popular and he does raise a lot of money for charity.
I don't know him personally but I know someone who does and they speak very highly of him so I am more inclined to listen to them than what is said in the media about him.

LessMissAbs · 14/08/2013 12:09

FriendlyLadybird I think YABU to assume this is rampant nepotism. He's not starting his son's future career in radio FFS

I think we all know that this is just the start of nepotism for the children of media "stars" - a few juvenile tv appearances, then onto the teen years and it turns into opportunities few kids see, with past media exposure to point to, and before you know it, we are given exposed to something akin to the dubious "talents" of the Geldof sisters. Actually, if someone could spare me the Geldof sisters, I would voluntarily listen to Chris Evans for a whole day on the radio.

Chris Evans for me a kind of vacuous, mildly abusive and misogynistic stereotype that has become increasingly dated since he first appeared, but obviously he now has so many contacts in the media he still gets jobs. I put Russell Brand in the same category, not least because he has the same awful voice.

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 14/08/2013 12:18

Just turn the radio off??! Hmm
