So i was in town this morning with the Q7 (or the panzer tank as I call it) and i pulled up to a space. I reversed in a few times but i was always a bit squint. Eventually i left the car squint but still in the bay. I let out my kids and just while i locked the car this woman came over.

she said i should go back and straighten the car out because it was squint. I told her that if she had a q7 i would like to see her park it in such a tight space. She thought i was suggesting that she didn't have a big car because she was poor. i wasn't suggesting that at all. so she went into a long rant about me being disrespectful. i was shocked .

but i didn't shout too much cause i had two kids with me.

aibu to be annoyed at her.

I had a Q7 as a courtesy car for 8 weeks. It was massive and we nicknamed it 'the beast'.
It was lovely inside but I felt it looked really anti-social on the outside. A bit of a 'show off car' really.
There are other 7 seater 4x4's that are less 'in your face'
However, I could park it perfectly and straight. It's a bug bear of mine when people park at an angle as it can affect others and make their like more difficult.
You really need to go out when it's quiet and practice until you can park properly.
I have recently purchased a Q5 (show off emotion) and suggest that you consider one. It's smaller and easier to park. Just don't give other people a lift

I used to live near you in the seventies and eighties OP. Funnily enough, we all managed without Q7s back then Hmm

I'm with the 'if you can't park it, don't drive it' school of thought - perhaps you should think about taking a few parking lessons from a driving instructor until you can park?

Why do people always blame the car when they can't park? Q7s are not hard to park, Range Rovers are not hard to park..... some people just can't park and need to stop blaming the car. You have a rear view mirror and two side mirrors, learn to use them.

You say "in the lines" but your car is big, so I bet it made parking for others really hard. That is selfish, so YABU. Drive whatever the heck you like but selfish parking ticks people off.

OP I am 100% on your side - I have a 107 and can't park it so dread to think what I would be like in a Q7! As long as you're between the lines people should sod off and leave you alone.

What are you doing about your inability to park your car Laurier?

if you can't safely park a car, so that you cause no inconvenience or dangers to others, then you, quite simply, shouldn't have a licence. Parking is an essential part of driving, unless one has discovered the secret of perpetual motion and intends never to stop.

Why aren't people reading the thread? The OP was NOT bay parking, she was parallel parking. She was within the lines. Her being squint was therefore of no consequence to anybody except to this presumably deranged audi hating mumsnetter! I think the Q7 is a pretty ridiculous car tbh but no way does the OP deserve the vitriol chucked here. Personally I passed my test just over two years ago and have had to drive our family touran ever since. Some days I can park it really well. Some days not so well. That's not a character flaw on my part, it's just the way that goes.

Have you bothered to read the thread? Parking between the lines but at an angle or right on one line still makes it hard for others.

You are supposed to park in hte middle of the lines not just anywhere in the lines.

Oh and parking is not only about using your mirrors. You need to look all around you as well. Rely on your mirrors and you will hit somebody or something.

Yabu.

Get a car you can actually park.

Northern - even parallel parking a car parked at an angle can make it very hard for the cars in front and behind to manoeuvre.

YANBU if you were in the lines.

YAU if you call it 'the Q7' in daily discussion.

No sirzy, assuming she's stopped a reasonable distance away from each car then it shouldn't be harder for other drivers. They've just got to avoid a corner of car not a flat front but the furthest point forward shouldn't be any further than if it was straight - unless she has parked too close which would obviously be bad. I really can't see a problem.

Who cares what the op drives and what gives people the right to make a judgement on her driving a large car, fuel costs etc?!

If you were parked so others could also park then ynbu but if you parked and it would be difficult to park next to you then ybu.

No idea what a q7 is, but as long as you are in the lines don't care how you park.

YANBU to defend yourself against someone having a go, but I take my hat off to the woman who actually called you on the issue.
If the car is too large for you to handle properly, buy a bloody mini and give the rest of the car-park using population a break.

Op - I tell you what, you can't drive the Q7 and I can, I have a Ford Focus which is easy to park... I'll bring it up to Braemar and swap with you :)

Hate Q7s. My friend has one. They are anti-social and look ridiculous. Just my opinion. Should have parked it in coach parking perhaps.

"There are other 7 seater 4x4's that are less 'in your face'"

The fuck has the car got to do with it. If OP was in a banger with 13 children and 17 unrestrained dogs in the boot would she then have NBU?

I can understand the aggro parking causes. I hate bad parking. Being squinty in a parallel parking space might cause me to feel some minor irritation but not to accost a woman with children with her about parking that although isn't great was within the lines.

If someone is within the lines and you cannot park next to them you are the problem. My car is big, I do not need to drive over any of the adjoining spaces even by an inch to park.

If someone has a more expensive/ more upgraded / shiny car than you then tough shit. If you want one, get one and if you think they're shit, don't!

The car has got everything to do with it if you can't park the fucking thing, regardless of what it is. If you can't park it without going backwards and forwards and backward and forwards and then leaving it squint (and I'm willing to bet it wasn't just a wee bit squint, more like sticking right out in the road sqint) then whether you're a woman with children or a man with a zoo sized load of parrots you should at least take a few parking lessons.

Report
Saidar · 22/07/2013 19:47

So why is so much advice to the OP to get a less ostentatious/ more environmentally friendly car? That isn't going to improve her parking. Most 4X4's are big. The fact that this one is quite jazzy seems to have so many people with a stick right up their arse.

"I'm willing to bet it wasn't just a wee bit squint, more like sticking right out in the road sqint"

That may be the case, but as will all threads, you can only go on the info the OP gives.

Looked up q7 now.

Based on size, if it was in the bay it can't have been that crooked.

Basic geometry.

Either OP was mistaken or other person was random eccentric. However, without contacting the relevant authority and obtaining CCTV footage we will never know.
