So i was in town this morning with the Q7 (or the panzer tank as I call it) and i pulled up to a space. I reversed in a few times but i was always a bit squint. Eventually i left the car squint but still in the bay. I let out my kids and just while i locked the car this woman came over.

she said i should go back and straighten the car out because it was squint. I told her that if she had a q7 i would like to see her park it in such a tight space. She thought i was suggesting that she didn't have a big car because she was poor. i wasn't suggesting that at all. so she went into a long rant about me being disrespectful. i was shocked .

but i didn't shout too much cause i had two kids with me.

aibu to be annoyed at her.

Get a smaller 7 seater.

I have a Grand scenic. It has 7 seats and is a piece of piss to park.

oh and YABU for not being able to park straight, she was bu to comment.

think the woman was totally justified in having a vent at you. It makes it really awkward for others if you dont park straight. Tis selfish, and lazy

YABU

park properly

I love Braemar, was town you were parking in your own town? Was she just a tourist perhaps. I'd be more worried if it was someone you're likely to see often. I mean if she really thinks you were being disrespectful to her.

Grin

lunatic, I could do with some of that! My DH tried to go get my shoes out of the car the other day and came back saying he couldn't find it because there are lots of grey cars. Hmm

I've yet to find anywhere, with marked parallel parking bays, that it would be possible to park a Q7 (or any large 4x4) squint, without either the front or the back being outside of the white lines.

I don't get how people are saying they need a 7-seater for 5 people. The OP and at least one other. I have three DC and a DP and we all fit quite happily in our normal 5-seater car. I even put the dog in the footwell sometimes.

Blame it on the heat then, you were legally parked, problem was hers. Maybe she'd just had some upsetting news and needed to vent.

Sorry you're receiving such a bashing for your choice of car.

Fair enough bobby (re the temp), we have villages regularly cut off in the winter, snow and floods, just stating what is the norm in another rural area. Obviously last winter was extreme for many I appreciate, especially up north.

As I said, I don't have any personal issue with anyone's choice of car. Just that they can drive and manoeuvre it safely and proficiently, in effect, actually be in complete control of it. Anyone who struggles should consider having a few additional lessons, it doesn't hurt, even after years of driving, rather than always be a bit crap at x, y or z part of driving.

It worries me when people cannot properly complete a basic manoeuvre in a car after multiple attempts.

Learn to park properly is my only advice and I dont mean that snidey either.
I cannot stand people with huge cars who cannot park straight..surely with all the technology on board it would practically park itself!
I love my old style Picasso, I can fit everyone in it that needs to fit in&enough holiday luggage for 5 people and its the best car Ive had for parking.

Actually, might it be worth investigating a further driving lesson and getting competent with the parking?

YABU. If you park wonky it makes things difficult for those who park next to you. And I have to agree with others. Why have a car so big that you can't park it?

Report
Twirlyhot · 22/07/2013 16:26

You can be great at driving and not so great at parking. If it's that particular model of car that's difficult to park I'd look at replacing it.

I get fed up of folk branding all 4 x 4 drivers as irresponsible.

We have ponies and need a safe vehicle to tow with. Mysister has one at the moment as mine wasnt economical to repair last time it went bang and we are currently skint so I ended up with a ford focus as a run around and we share transport for ponies with sister for now.

But next year we will be going to different shows to sister so my focus will be replaced with a gas guzzler I will probably struggle to get in tiny bays. Never mind parallel park.

But my gas guzzler will spend most of the week parked up like the focus does. We walk most places and I work from home so although my car will be bigger than many others I won't use as much fuel as most people who use their cars for work.

Don't think you were BU op. If you were in the lined you were in the lines and legally parked.

Damnautocorrect · 22/07/2013 16:40

bollocks have whatever car you blinking well like.
You were being a bit unreasonable leaving it wonky but as long as it wasnt massively squiffy you were ok.
I'm a bit OCD about being straight in a space, so if have avoided parking next to you.

Slangwhanger

I would have been surprised if the OP had said that her bad car parking was going to affect others...wouldn't you?

So sorry you think my post was mean but not half as mean or selfish as being driving a car which one cannot park without doing it badly. Anti-social and selfish behaviour and yes, if she doesn't want to look like a cock AGAIN, she should have take refresher lessons in learning how to park or cut her cloth to a car that she can drive or...take a bus.

I live in a rural village where the temperature drops below -20 regularly in winter. We are often cut off and roads are impassable not only in snow, but also in very wet weather as they flood. I can see the need for a 4x4 living where I do (and I do have one) but we have managed perfectly well for three of the four winters we have lived here without one. I do drive a 4x4 now, but it cost me less than £1,000 and I can park it no problem in a normal space.

So, IMO, yanbu for having a 4x4 where you live, but yabu if you can't park it (mine doesn't have parking sensors or anything like that). Yanbu for being a bit peeved about the narky woman critiquing your driving if you were parked within the space properly (by that I mean that the people on either side can also get into their cars) but yabu to mention the type of car you were driving so many times in your post as it did feel a bit like a stealth boast!

I find there is 1 car park where I often have to park squinty so I can get both myself and kids out of the car. It seems to give a little bit more door opening space. Its much easier to park straight so I think you deserve a bit of praise for being able to park squinty Smile

I didn't park the car as neatly as I could have done today as I nipped into a space on the other side of a busy side road which I probably should have parallel parked into, but I'd have never got in at all due to the traffic if I'd have tried that. But I shuffled it about to the extent it was not causing an obstruction either to passing cars or people parked in front or behind.

I'm pretty good at parking but everyone has their moments - but I'd never leave the car in a dangerous/illegal place or causing an obstruction.

Drive whatever car you like but either learn to park it or get used to the abuse & stfu.
