to lose it at this angry woman who criticised my parking.

So i was in town this morning with the Q7 (or the panzer tank as I call it) and i pulled up to a space. I reversed in a few times but i was always a bit squint. Eventually i left the car squint but still in the bay. I let out my kids and just while i locked the car this woman came over.

she said i should go back and straighten the car out because it was squint. I told her that if she had a q7 i would like to see her park it in such a tight space. She thought i was suggesting that she didn't have a big car because she was poor. i wasn't suggesting that at all. so she went into a long rant about me being disrespectful. i was shocked .

but i didn't shout too much cause i had two kids with me.

aibu to be annoyed at her.

If someone is within the lines and you cannot park next to them you are the problem. My car is big, I do not need to drive over any of the adjoining spaces even by an inch to park

Neither do I, but I AM strangely fond of the notion of being able to open the doors.

Some of you people are talking as though the 'line' is two foot wide, and being right up close to it doesn't affect the person in the space just cms away over the other side of the line.

Ridiculous! Yes, you must park within the lines but there is more to being able to park than that!

Saidar · 22/07/2013 20:01

I tend not to park alongside others when parallel parking.

DespicableYou · 22/07/2013 20:01

Seriously "within the lines" you sound like those MP's whining nasally about how their expense claims were "within the rules".

If your parking is 'squinty' you are creating unequal spaces on either side of you. Yes, you are within the lines but you are still being an anti social numpty!

Rainbowinthesky · 22/07/2013 20:01

She was rude but correct. I agree you shouldn't drive something you can't handle and I don't give a toss how expensive your car is.

SirChenjin · 22/07/2013 20:04

Absolutely, we can only go on what the OP says - although, as Merrymouse points out, basic geometry...

missmarplestmarymead · 22/07/2013 20:05

I don't think most people are annoyed that she has a big car...so what!

She can't park it without causing a nuisance or danger to others. She should not be on the road if she cannot master this basic part of driving, any more than she should be on the road if she is incapable of using the reverse gear.

If this failing is because the car is too big for her then she should change it.

If it is because she cannot master parking if she drove a robin reliant, then she should invest in extra lessons until she can.

If it is still beyond her, then she is not fit to be on the road, as she is demonstrating that she cannot handle a car. In that case, use public transport.

Not everyone is suited to driving-and there is more to driving than going along in a straight line-one has to be able to be in charge of the vehicle.

Golferman · 22/07/2013 20:06

Well, I live in Scotland and I have a Jaguar XJ Portfolio with TV and everything, worth £70000 so there! :-D

Alisvolatpropiis · 22/07/2013 20:12

Golf

Can you park it though? That's the important bit!

SirChenjin · 22/07/2013 20:15

Exactly - who cares what you drive, so long as you can park the thing!

Golferman · 22/07/2013 20:17

Now that's a different story Alis as my parking, even after 40 years is crap :-D

SirChenjin · 22/07/2013 20:18

Why don't you take some lessons and learn how to park properly? 40 years is probably long enough to accept that you need them.

GemmaTeller · 22/07/2013 20:18

Is this a reverse AIBU?

GemmaTeller · 22/07/2013 20:19

reversing into a space reverse AIBU

northernlurker · 22/07/2013 20:19

SHE WAS NOT BAY PARKING!

Sorr to shout but really people need to get that nobody was going to be unable to open doors because she was squint.

Golferman · 22/07/2013 20:20

I was being jovial Sir Chen, don't believe all you read, especially what i write :-)

SirChenjin · 22/07/2013 20:24

Noted Golfer

DespicableYou · 22/07/2013 20:29

Oops, sorry, ok, parallel parking.

So your car stuck out wonky in the road rather than flush with the pavement? Still ignorant and selfish.

CottonWoolCandy · 22/07/2013 20:33

I know what a Q7 is. I've been to Braemar. YWNBU.

However YWB-naive if you thought you could mention parking on MN without it turning into a bun fight.

Now, I'm off to Google Golferman's car because I don't know what that looks like Smile

Ok, re-read the thread again (inc all the drip feeding ;) )

So you parallel parked your Q7 in a very tight parking spot. Despite it being a panzer tank and the spot being very tight you were with the lines and no part of the car was sticking over the space.

In which case, YANBU.

missmarplestmarymead · 22/07/2013 20:41

If she wasn't bay parking but couldn't even park it on the road, how on earth did she get a licence in the first place? Has she even got a licence?

The woman should not be on the road if she cannot perform a simple operation such as parking her car on the road. Pity it wasn't towed.

She must, as she is a danger to herself, her passengers and other road users, give up her car until she has learned to drive.

MrsKeithRichards · 22/07/2013 20:58

Who are you using about missmarple?

CottonWoolCandy · 22/07/2013 20:59

Missmarple I'm Shock at your anger!
If a car is dangerously parked it will be towed. However in Scotland, the traffic wardens trust the bay system. If a vehicle is in a bay then it stays (even if it is squinty in a bay!). If it is over a line then the traffic wardens photograph it and the vehicle is lifted away to the pound. (I know this as my dm lives on a busy road that has odd curves and angles, as well as bay parking. )

justanuthermanicmumsday · 22/07/2013 21:06

if it was within lines none of her business. this woman parked too closed to my husbands car, after Xmas shop she couldn't pull out. I had just out my infant to bed and other toddlers she banged on door she didnt ring. i got up thinking its some sort of emergency . the lady at the door did not say hello nothin just , "move the car" i just looked at her and thought what a tosser. first one ive met since living in edinburgh lool. i said its not mine and its in front of our drive. Anyways got husband who was having dinner . Same response move car. Now he doesn't stand for stuff like this he was blunt. He crossed his arms and said no. Not until you say please lool i ran off to living room to laugh. She said she was going to get her police friend who lives near us. Husband said fine run along get him. guy appeared not on duty clearly sympathetic with us. the lady started pacing the drive in anger. She was around 50 years old she thought she was some warrior, even though she parked too close to him then got wedged in with another car behind her. The cheek of it!

merrymouse · 22/07/2013 21:10

Exactly cotton wool.
