To peg my washing out over night

McNewPants2013 · 10/07/2013 20:11

I am new to this, but as I am saving any way I can to get out of debt ASAP I bought a washing line. ( saved £7 this week by not using the tumble dryer)

So do I peg out my washing tonight.

I don't leave washing out overnight as there has been no need to. Wash in the morning, peg out by 11am and it'll be dry by bedtime.

carameldecaflatte · 13/07/2013 13:42

Yanbu I often put the washing out the evening before (and cross my fingers for good weather) because we only get sun on the garden in the morning, and I'm busy with ds and drinking copious amounts of tea first thing.

YoniBottsBumgina · 13/07/2013 14:50

People match pegs to clothing colours? :o

My collection of pegs is so old and mismatched, half faded in different degrees, that I doubt I even have two in the same colour...

MummyDuckAndDuckling · 13/07/2013 14:58

I'm away from home tonight and I've just put a few loads out on the line that will be out overnight but dry for when i return tomorrow Smile

CharlotteBronteSaurus · 13/07/2013 15:00

I've started doing it since I increased my hours at work.
We've got a north facing garden, so it wouldn't dry if I hung it when I got home at 5.30pm
I only do it properly warm weather though, as it does get a wee bit damp smelling otherwise

Clicketyclack · 13/07/2013 15:06

Of course its fine to peg the washing out at night-why on earth not?Hmm.

cozietoesie · 13/07/2013 15:27

In fact, Clicketyclack if you're minded to hang out copious numbers of undies, it's probably darned near obligatory! (So that the neighbours' sensibilities aren't challenged thanks to the cover of darkness.)

I'm going to have to have to do this tonight as DH has sprung a bit of a trip on me so need to get things washed and dried before tomorrow Smile

Does the washing stay exactly where you put it or does it have tend to get a bit battered about during the night? I just can imagine opening the curtains and my garden being covered in washing.

shufflehopstep · 13/07/2013 20:43

EBearhug That's so funny. When I still lived at home with my mum and dad, they had different coloured pegs and I always tried to match them with the clothes and never had two different colours of pegs hanging one item. I just have plain wooden ones now so it's a lot easier. Grin

cozietoesie · 13/07/2013 20:48

Sorry, shuffle, it's not easier. Wooden ones absorb and transfer any colour leaching from anywhere. You shall require a chart to say what has been used and where.

I'm a little bit washing-obsessed. It's genetically passed on through the female line in my family.

My washing is colour co-ordinated on the line. The pegs I hang the clothes out with must match. I would rather die than put two different coloured pegs on one item of clothing. Adults' underwear is NEVER put on the line, but children's underwear is. Socks are hung up in pairs. You get the picture Grin

I'm the font of all knowledge with regards to laundry etiquette. A veritable guru. However, even I would say that there's nothing wrong with hanging the washing out overnight in dire emergencies! (Or even if you just want to.)

I have to point out that I was in my forties before I realised that the world wouldn't suddenly combust if I did this occasionally.

My mother may be turning in her grave though. Shock

So it's a no from me Grin

apostropheuse · 13/07/2013 21:08

orangelily Are you going on a wee surprise trip perchance? Grin

cozietoesie · 13/07/2013 21:35

OK - I'll fess up to hanging socks in pairs. Blush

apostropheuse · 13/07/2013 21:46

cozietoes Well done on hanging your socks in pairs.

You now need to work on the appropriate drying method for your knickers and bras, i.e. NOT outside.

cozietoesie · 13/07/2013 21:55

I could do like the old mother did in (I think) The Assistant - put them outside but shroud them in something else?

I must say, this is all bringing out unforeseen sides to a lot of posters. Who would have guessed. Grin

OrangeLily · 13/07/2013 22:08

I am going on a surprise trip :( unfortunately its got cold here and I can't be arsed taking stuff in tomorrow before we go so I have taken it in! I really want to try this outside at night thing!

I am a total slattern though and use different colours and sizes of pegs willy nilly Grin All over the place.

londone17 · 13/07/2013 22:26

Nothing wrong with it. Im all for making life easier.

sagfold · 13/07/2013 22:36

This thread is a real eye opener - who knew there was so much to laundry.

Now wondering what my neighbours must think of my mismatched 3-5 day hangouts in all weather. (ashamed :( )

thismousebites · 13/07/2013 22:37

Think there was a similar thread last summer.
Yes, go for it. so what if your neighbours sneer. Your washing will be dry by morning, theirs will still be in the laundry basket waiting to be pegged out in daytime.
What difference does it make?
Make the most of this fab weather and peg on.

SirChenjin · 13/07/2013 22:41

My washing is out now, and by the BBC Scotland's weather report, should be dry by the morning ready for my next load to go onto the line.

Some of you are weirdy weird when it comes to housework and laundry.

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 13/07/2013 22:44

I've been away for a week, got back to notice DH left a pair of my knickerson the line when he got the washing in before we left. They must be dry by now!! Grin

DramaAlpaca · 13/07/2013 23:28

I've just come back inside from pegging out a load on the washing line by torchlight.

It'll be nicely dry by lunchtime tomorrow.

EBearhug · 14/07/2013 03:01

Socks are hung in pairs - with the heels pointing the same way.

Sometimes, I wish I could get so obsessive with all the other chores. For a fortnight or so, till everything is sparkling clean, and then go back to normal.

DonDrapersAltrEgoBigglesDraper · 14/07/2013 03:17

News flash. Your neighbours don't care about your washing. They seriously could not care less about your washing if they tried. Your washing is deeply boring and mundane to your neighbours. It is even more boring than their own washing ... and that is saying something, because their own washing bores them rigid.

When was the last time you noticed your neighbours' washing? Never, right? Unless you're Hyacinth Bucket, of course. In which case, it probably fascinates you. But then you have way bigger problems than just the rights and wrongs over washing left out overnight.

Peg it out. Leave it out. Dance naked amongst it whilst howling at the moon. Your neighbours do not care.
