I am new to this, but as I am saving any way I can to get out of debt ASAP I bought a washing line. ( saved £7 this week by not using the tumble dryer)

So do I peg out my washing tonight.

I put it out overnight all the time. Don't have time in the morning! It never smells funny.

How would earwigs crawl in unless the washing was touching the ground?

Report
pookamoo · 11/07/2013 23:55

Earwigs can fly, lilacpeony

I hang mine out in the evenings, bring in after school run, in which time I have usually had to do 2 more loads.

Yes peg it out, in the autumn/winter you can hang it up in the house overnight so no need for the tumble dryer then either.

Oh can they? I probably knew that once as i remember seeing them in my parents garden as a kid, but i had forgotten it!

Mine often stays out overnight although often this is just because I have forgotten to bring it in. Has never smelt funny. I think it's fine to do this.

Why wouldn't you? I just leave mine out til it's dry. I get in from work, do a wash and by the time it's hung out it's lat evening so I just leave it overnight.

I used to work with a woman who was mortified that the google earth picture of her house showed she had easing in the line!!! :)

I tried it for the first time this week, only because the weather was so nice and when I went outside after the sun had gone down, to collect my washing my cottons were dry but heavier items like jeans were still damp. The next day before breakfast I checked and they were fine, I've had a good sniff to see if they smell and they do, but only that lovely fresh outside smell. I probably wouldn't do it unless the weather was guaranteed to be lovely, but it worked this time. Plus it's better than putting your washing out on a weekend and getting your neighbours BBQ smell all over the washing

One of my mother's little foibles was that it's slatternly to leave your washing on the line overnight. I felt very rebellious the other day when I left a load of towels out there, because they were still damp when I would have brought them in.

It'll be fine in the current weather, but I wouldn't do it much of the year, simply because there's too much chance that they'll be soaked in rain by morning. In fact, it's been really nice being able to hang washing out at all this year. There were months over the winter (which I was beginning to thing would never end,) where I hadn't been able to hang a load out at all, as the weather was so rubbish for so long. Though I'm not appreciating it so much I'm doing extra loads of washing just for the pleasure of hanging it out. Smile

I put some out at 8pm this evening. It'll stay there til it dries.

I can't afford to run the drier and there's nowhere in the house to dry it as all the rads are off for summer. So it goes on the line rain hail or shine.

If it's still wet 2 days later I accept defeat and pop it in the drier but even then its usually drier than when it went out so still saves me money.

I've started putting a load on after dinner, hanging it on an airier overnight, then in the morning hauling the whole thing into the garden. I put pegs on if its windy.

Needs must though as the puppy jumped up and chewed my whirlybird lines and I have nowhere to hang any washing.

I'm a stay at home mum and i do so much washing its crazy. i get sick of it sometimes and refuse to hang it. It's takes a while hanging 3 loads you know. Last few days soo hot i have hung it in the evening and left it overnight, come morning it's so dry its stiff.

What are people on about why would it smell? Foxes don't pee on clothes they pee on the ground. bird poo more likely in the day, so where does smell come into it?

OCD is an excuse. I have OCD wash hands a lot, and yet i don't think hanging clothes over night is unhygienic . It's worse to leave it wet in a basket for the morning. That's more likely to smell. Besides tumble dryer running in this heat is stupidity!, also makes my utility room and kitchen sooo hot i can't stand it.

Only prob I've had were bees. Give it a good shake or the insects make go in house with you lol. I was sipping tea then hear pd buzzing from my laundry basket i ran out the kitchen looking for husband to sort the problem out lol.

What's all this snobbery about hanging clothes at night? It's hilarious!

My first post I ever read on here was saying people are lazy for leaving on over night.. And I kinda of agreed with them, from a nosy neighbour point of view.
But I get up late (maybe I'm not a morning person) and only seem to put washing on after work. I have always used my tumble dryer.. I'm now converted after this thread. I will hang my washing on line at night from now on Smile

I do it. Our apartment is east facing so I want to make full use of the limited amount of sunshine we get on our balcony without waking up well before dawn to put the wash on. It usually dries a bit faster too.

Only in hot weather as it dries overnight.

Here in Oz it is the done thing apparently to hang your washing out at night as daylight sun would fade your clothes. I am wondering now if people here think you are a lazy slattern if you leave clothes out to dry in day time. Grin

Until this thread I had no idea this was an issue. I am a slattern though but I would say yes peg it out overnight.
