To peg my washing out over night

McNewPants2013 · 10/07/2013 20:11

I am new to this, but as I am saving any way I can to get out of debt ASAP I bought a washing line. ( saved £7 this week by not using the tumble dryer)

So do I peg out my washing tonight.

I was once told it was bad luck to leave your washing out overnight. I'm not superstitious though did get my washing nicked once when I left it out.

yummumto3girls · 10/07/2013 23:28

I do it, by morning it's dry and I bring it in and therefore clothes don't bleach in the hot sun this time of year and don't go as stiff as cardboard from the sun. It obviously depends on the weather (and my washing line is hidden in the garden!)

shufflehopstep · 10/07/2013 23:32

I don't because if it starts raining you probably won't hear it until it's too late. Also, what about the morning dew? it will still be damp.

echt · 11/07/2013 07:28

This thread has made me realise that I've left some washing out for three days now.:o

In the Australian style, the washing line is not visible from the house, nor can the neighbours see it. So I tend to forget. I'm always careful to put dark clothes on the inner line so as not to bleach in the sun. Even in mid-winter, with clear skies it got up to 16 today.

I think I'd better check...

catsmother · 11/07/2013 07:54

Common ?? Lazy ?? WTF ?!?

I hang my washing out - at whatever time it's suited me to have washed it, and providing I can still see to do it. Then I take it in when it's dry. If that means it stays out overnight so be it ..... shock horror .... sometimes it stays out for 2 nights because it's been rained on while I've been out so it needs to dry again.

Who the heck actually cares what their neighbours do (or not) with their washing. Like, is there a washing police out there making notes, logging what time it went out, what time it went in and so on?

mrsjay · 11/07/2013 08:09

well you leave it till the dew dries iyswim , we dont really have the weather do do it a lot anyway but the times i have left it out It was dry by mid morning

Have you met my upstairs neighbour she is the miss marple of washing hanging out, I heard her gossip to another neighbour about somebody over the bac far too lazy to take her washing it and it was followed by a tut Grin

MadeOfStarDust · 11/07/2013 08:22

How odd... I do my washing when I get home - so it either goes on the line overnight right now, or would need to be washed again in the morning...

I am not an advocate of indoor drying since it increases mildew and icky moulds if you don't have great ventilation...

Drying on the line overnight is great for linens and cottons anyhow - you bring it in in the morning , slightly damp from the dew and it irons a dream - unlike putting out before going to work - when you get home stuff is crispy and needs steam ironing or spraying.

Less work if you hang it overnight - always works with me...

Rain is nature's fabric conditioner.Smile

Lj8893 · 11/07/2013 08:58

My washing was left out overnight, mainly because I put it out late afternoon and it was still a bit damp at 9pm.

Why would I bring damp washing in? I will leave it out for the rest of the day just in case its got damp overnight or "smells funny" and will bring it in when I get home from work.

I may even wack another load out tonight!!!

Oooo I'm common as muck me, whatever will the neighbours think!

Bicnod · 11/07/2013 19:34

I do this and I am extremely posh Grin

formicadinosaur · 11/07/2013 19:37

I do. Best thing anyone told me to do.

SelectAUserName · 11/07/2013 19:48

bear in mind that colours will be exposed to a lot of sunshine, but not much heat, so it may cause them to fade more quickly

Not that much sunshine, surely? Isn't it, errr, dark at night?

Plomino · 11/07/2013 19:49

I must be both a lazy slattern and common then , because I do it all the time . But then doing 5 - 7 loads a day means the lines always being used. And it smells of nothing but proper fresh air , which is much better than that cheap smelling fake jasmine and linen bollocks.

Sometimes I'm even a drunken lazy slattern too , because I do it with a glass of wine next to me . It's one of the few moments of peace I get .

ravenAK · 11/07/2013 19:56

Oooh yes, pegging out on a warm summer's evening with a glass of wine.

I have a massive load of dds' frocks in at the moment...loads of little knickers & socks too - looking forward to it!

fruminousbandersnatch · 11/07/2013 20:03

If the neighbours think I'm a slattern for hanging out my washing at night then let them. If they're so bizarre that this occupies their thoughts it's unlikely that we'd become friends anyway.

I think sanityclause must live in the Arctic Circle?

TeaAndSconesTwice · 11/07/2013 20:35

I do it, only with the weather like we have now, it smells fresh, not bothered what the neighbours think.

I have 2 half loads out there at the moment. Smile

McNewPants2013 · 11/07/2013 20:39

Well my washing wasn't subjected to a zombie attack or smell, so tonight I am pegging it out again.

MamaChubbyLegs · 11/07/2013 20:39

I am doing this right now! In fact, mine and DP's pants are hanging from the tree, not even on a line Grin

We live in a nice area, but I'm as common as see-through leggings Wink

Literally dont care what my neighbours think!

Everlong I have to be out at 6am and already get up at 5:15 so it either getting up earlier or peg out when I can the night before.

My neighbour complained about my washing being pegged out on the line. In my garden!
(He monitors my behaviour via his binoculars)
He thinks it's Sodom and Gomorrah over here.
I dont have a drier, and even if I did, I would use Natures drier.
Hang your washing out wherever and whenever you like.
My neighbour is being treated to my giant pants right now.

mrsjay · 11/07/2013 21:07

i have just put my towels out i had crispy towels the other day I told dds it was exfolliating Grin

mrsjay · 11/07/2013 21:08

spanky2 · 11/07/2013 21:14
