To peg my washing out over night

I am new to this, but as I am saving any way I can to get out of debt ASAP I bought a washing line. ( saved £7 this week by not using the tumble dryer)

So do I peg out my washing tonight.

I was brought up to believe it was common but in this weather, I've been doing this. And so have my neighbours. Just don't tell me Mum! Smile

I do it.

I had a whole line out last night drying and I'm about to put on another load on the assumption that the current line is dry.

However, my newish neighbours took all theirs in when it grew dark. That wouldn't worry me if it weren't for the fact that I realized that I have never, ever, seen them hang out any underwear. Of any description. Not even socks.

I'm now becoming a little sensitive not only about night time drying but at the fact that I put out a part line of undies. I suppose it's possible that they've given up underwear for the duration but I'm now wondering if I should be being more discreet about knickers? Perhaps we're being judged right now over breakfast.

I hang mine out o/n when it's hot, I hang it out after work and leave until the morning when i change for some new. If it was spring it could get a bit damp if there's a lot of moisture in the air but in summer-no problems. Always smells great and i get spiders during the day so no difference between day and night :)

Make your own choice. The worse you can do in this weather, imho, is use the dyer if you have a line. My neighbour never uses her line, just the dryer, I find that lazy, unecomnomical and wasteful when the weather is hot enough to dry.

cozietoesie I put my underwear on an airer which sits outside in the suntrap where the neighbours can't see. In my old place i never gave a damn and used the line for thongs and my french maids outfit too but next door now is a pervy man and just seeing my denim shorts got a lot of lewd comments so i use the sun trap now so he can't see anything he's comment on.

I did loads of washing yesterday, the last lot went out at tea time but when I could be bothered to go and get it in it felt damp, the forecast was good for today so I left it out there, its still there now Smile will get it in after the sun has been on it a while and it will smell lovely... I love doing laundry and drying washing outside

cozietoesie I never hang underwear out. I'm also unnecessarily judgemental about others who do it - particularly my next door neighbour. Which is doubley ridiculous as the only person who would see my underwear is my neighbour who, as discussed, hangs her own underwear outside, so wouldn't bat an eyelid Hmm.

mia4 I don't have a tumble dryer - they're expensive and not environmentally friendly. Also we have a kitchen the size of a matchbox so no room. I hang my washing up on airers inside most of the time but I love the smell when it's been hanging out.

shufflehopstep they are expensive and not very friendly that's why i never understand y neighbour- she's a 'fast lady' though, if it takes more then 30 seconds she drops it, doesn't do it or throws it away. Really wasteful person, much as she's lovely.

We use airers inside when we have to but i also love putting stuff out either on the line or i use some airers outside because the smell is so much nicer.

What do you mean 'throws it away' Mia ? Are you saying that is it take too long to peg out she dumps it?

I always leave a load out overnight when it's forecast to be nice the next day.

I also stick a load in the machine before I go to bed

The load I've left out is always dry by the time I get up the next morning so I can hang the load that's in the machine straight out

I did a load late last night, hung it out and it was dry by 8am, probably sooner.

It's 'night' for about five minutes at this time of year and MAD to not take advantage of that.

I'm traumatised! What will my neighbours make of

  • my undies flapping wantonly in the breeze at all hours of the day and night
  • complete lack of male undies on the line

If you're worried about spiders and moths, just shake the clothes well when you take them off the line. I hate spiders and this has never failed for me.

Mine is on the line right now. It has been there for approximately 24 hours because I forgot to get it in before it was dark.

I couldn't give a stuff about whether other people think it is "common" - I think that says more about them then it does about me :) It's far preferable than a clothes horse in the house draped with laundry.

Not sure why it would smell funny and I've never had an insect problem despite forgetting to bring the washing in on many occasions.

Oh, I'm not saying there wasn't a web on mine when I went to check it but the world didn't end that I noticed. Then I had a Biscuit Boist for breakfast Smile

I agree with catsmother. It gets put in when i have a spare moment, put out asap after it's finished, and taken in when it's dry. I hang everything out, knickers, washable san pro included. I couldn't care less what anyone thinks, it's not lazy, just sensible.

I think it's worse to bring it in at night if it's damp - worst thing you can do with damp washing is leave it folded or scrunched in a basket! Mildewy smells ahoy!

Surely the thinking about it being "lazy" comes from the times when washing machines weren't automatic and you would need the whole day to dry it? Hence lazy if you didn't do the logical thing and do it first thing. With modern machines it takes less time to wash and they tend to part dry clothes with the spin cycle, plus it's the done thing to wash clothes more often now, so it's no more logical to wash first thing in the morning. Plus people have more to do now, working /studying etc rather than just having the house to worry about.

I love hanging mine out over night
We have a night blooming jasmine so all the clothes come in with a very delicate smell, its fab.

Re:hanging undies out, we tend to let washing pile up, so if there's a big load to hang out I see using pegs on undies & socks as a waste so chuck them in the tumble dryer for 20 minutes (hangs head in shame) but not bras, they go out Grin where else would the robins nest? Grin

poster cozietoesie: Yes, she's bee known to wear something once and throw rather then wash, it must cost her a fortune though she buys a bit in primark so it's not as expensive for t-shirts and things. She has the view that things that are white don't last long anyway before going grey or shrinking. I think it's just not sorting her washing (relying on colour catchers) and tumbledyring doing it tbh.

Though she has started offering to myself when she's done so it does get recycled or freecycled y myself in the end. Still wasteful on her part though,

The load I left out overnight was dry when I got up this morning, and the load I washed overnight was ready to go out.

We've got 3 washing lines (house was previously rented out - I assume they had one each) so knickers and socks and bras go on the bit at the end of the garden which is surrounded by high bushes. People could still see it if they looked out of their bedroom windows, but if they haven't got anything better to do that's their problem.

DD's knickers go in the sunniest bit right in the middle. She's 6, so I'm sure she doesn't care, as she flashes them enough when she's wearing them Grin.

Yup, wasteful. As i said it's not so bad now they get freecycled or passed to myself or another but before it was disheartening when i realised why she had so many back bags (mind you she doesn't recycle either but that's another story) when there was nothing wrong with the clothes that a good wash, bleach or sun wouldn't cure.

I have to admit I do feel a bit judgemental about my neighbours' washing. It is completely irrational, but they don't match their peg colours, and it makes me feel uncomfortable. It's entirely my own problem, and I've never felt so strongly I've felt the need to leap over the wall and repeg it "properly", but I still don't like seeing it. It's just wrong to my mind. (And if they got new pegs all in one colour, it wouldn't happen anyway.)

(And I know I'm not the only person who can be a bit obsessive about hanging washing up in the proper order. Smile)
