to not like Carrie Bradshaw?

(Not sure if this is the right section but ...)

I recently re-watched the whole of S&TC (ill in bed with not much else to do), and never realised before what a whiney, needy and obsessive woman she really is.

She only apologised to Natasha for having an affair with her husband because she couldn't believe someone in New York could hate her that much Hmm

She willingly went back to Big countless times regardless of knowing that she was going to be hurt again.

She screwed over Aidan twice

I could go on Grin

I know she's just a fictional character and the show would be boring if she was perfect.

But aibu to really dislike her?

allaflutter I'm pleased I'm not the only one who thinks SATC isn't a crock o' shit! I do see that Carrie is needy and self obsessed but she obviously loved her friends. One of the things I like about it is that the characters are flawed and shows their weaknesses as well as their strengths; lots of characters in dramas are either black and white.

Bit odd though, that apart from Miranda's dead mum, none of them had any family Confused. Or if they did, they weren't invited to any of their weddings.

Ms Charlotte had a brother, and Miranda had siblings, which she really didnt like.

Agree re Carrie, always thought she was a selfish cow, and v v annoying.
I loved the episode where Miranda told Steve she loved him in the kitchen at her son's birthday party.
And where Harry asked Charlotte to marry him.
I do fancy Steve and Harry.

I watched the show and enjoyed it for years. Much of my enjoyment came from hating Carrie, the self centred fasion pony, she cantered around in Jimmy Choo's whinnying whingeing about men and her singular inability to empathise meant she never truly learned from her experiences.

The acters were very good and made in more watchable than it probably deserved.

All the SATC women are completely obssessed with their love lifes and with relationships. Nothing else seems of more importance, everything is there in their lives to facilitate their relationships with men. Whom they would always give up everything for, if the man has enough money. They don't seem to have any interests in sports, the arts, music, etc., just men and relationships and their jobs.

Although Carrie I think comes across as harsh because she is in love with Big, and constantly frustrated/unhappy because for most of it she isn't with him. And she did try with Aidan but why should she "settle" for someone else when she is in love with another man? (although I'm not convinced that that wasn't because Big is rich, older and powerful...)

I think that is probably why I watched it I did like it it was bubble gum telly really but god she was annoying, they are making or have made a prequel called the carrie diaries with a younger actress,

she was the most annoying

but I HEART SATC, maybe cos I was a 20-30 soemthing when it came out and it was a massive deal with me and my friends

My preferred is Miranda, followed by Samantha
Charlotte is too different to me
Carrie had her moment, but I lost major respect for her in the films x 2

she DID marry Mr Big, even though he SHAT all over her

What she did to Aiden was unforgivable!

I hated Aiden. Quietly controlling. I loved Big for what he was. We've all been there. None of us married him though. That really got my back up.

It's being repeated from the beginning. I'm enjoying it but, I loved the earlier ones. Funky spunk, the one were Charlotte makes them go to a sex work shop, Samantha and her designer waxing. When you think of it really it was bang on trend or even trend setting. I think it was majorly because it was in New York. A huge,y influential place. I was a couple of years younger in London at the time and it was bloody tough bring single in a big city were everyone was transient. It still is.

I never was a Carrie fan but she was very necessary. I loved all their clothes appart from the adult rompers.

All the smoking business got my backup I suppose. And that voice he used to put on. Na he wasn't the man for me.

I hated that she never learnt anything - shr was just as hopeless at the end as the beginning.

Shame Is SATC was really good at first - first series where Carrie was a bit of a fuck up. Was a lot more true to life than the later series with the tiresome shoe obsession and where she seemed to live the life of Riley based on writing one tabloid column a week.

I think SJP is a really good actress - carrie is a ghastly character but somehow she made lots of people warm to her. There is a bit where Carrie gets stoned and roars with laughter, I think that's the funniest bit in the whole lot.

The way the series ended was a terrible cop out. Carrie should have smiled at big, tell him she didn't need or want him and end up alone in NYC. Because that was the main love affair running through - Carrie and New York. It would have been so nice to have a longstanding series end with the main character NOT having to be validated by a man.

And Aiden was a wanker. Made me want to blow fag smoke all over his supercilious face.

YANBU. She was a silly woman who had never moved on from a high school mentality. Her life was all about obsessing over the latest fashion. parties and whining about men - not a good look when you're pushing forty.

"After reading this thread last night I went to bed and that episode when Miranda is trying to breast feed and Carrie gets all embarrassed because she seen her nipple."

Weird considering that Miranda is the one who fished out Carrie's diaphragm? Am I making that up?

Report
PopeBenedictsP45 · 01/03/2013 13:49

Oh it was Samantha who extricated the diaphragm. Still, Carrie you have no right to be embarrassed by a nipple after that little episode.
