to not like Carrie Bradshaw?

(Not sure if this is the right section but ...)

I recently re-watched the whole of S&TC (ill in bed with not much else to do), and never realised before what a whiney, needy and obsessive woman she really is.

She only apologised to Natasha for having an affair with her husband because she couldn't believe someone in New York could hate her that much Hmm

She willingly went back to Big countless times regardless of knowing that she was going to be hurt again.

She screwed over Aidan twice

I could go on Grin

I know she's just a fictional character and the show would be boring if she was perfect.

But aibu to really dislike her?

Oh and here's some advice I've learnt, strangely in my 42 years on the planet. If you're trying to make flirty conversation with a man, and you are scarfing down an oversized pretzel/cupcake/hotdog (insert various "park snacks") - it's not sexy to keep talking with food all over your gob, throwing your head back as bits are falling out of your mouth into a flirtatiously poised napkin.

No matter what you think. Just stop. Stop it now.

Her only redeeming feature is that she saved the day in Flight of the Navigator.

WallyBanters - I love Carrie but I love your hilarious comments even more! Thanks for the laugh - you are a gifted writer!!

Indeed she is a gifted writer - unlike our Carrie!

Seriously, who pays her for them goddamn articles? They barely make any sense when you've already seen the episode she's making vague reference to in her ridiculous weekly epiphanies.

That was so funny and yet so true.

I liked Miranda, IMO Cynthia Nixon is the only one that can act.

Nup, not BU. She's a shallow, nasty, self-obsessed bitch and what makes it more hilarious is that SJP clearly loves her. Have you seen the Jonathon Ross interview where he says 'basically, Carrie is a nightmare, well done you for playing it so well, god, she's so needy.

And SJP says 'Really? Carrie is needy? Why would you say that? What is it about her that makes you think she's needy? Tell me. I don't think she's needy. She's not needy. Why would you say that? Why? How is she needy? I can't believe you say she's needy?'

Yeah.

And then we got the films.

I don't know Binks wouldn't you love to feel you could invest all your relationship secrets into a best friends trust over Eggs Benedict at a Harlequin tiled cafe, and then discover the following week that all the intimate details of your dildo/bum sex/premature ejactulating boyfriend are spread over the local paper with just your initials used, and she didn't even pick up the cheque?

I know I would.

She was based on a real person wasn't she? A New York journalist ... can't remember her name.

Sure would, Wally!

I'd certainly love to read all about how my upsetting issues can be publicly resolved by my best friend getting a new pair of shoes and zig-zag strutting off into the sunset like a confused catwalk model.

Even Sarah Jessica Parker says she's 'the least relatable character I've ever played'.

I don't think she was meant to be particularly likeable though. Remember that episode where Miranda did her back in, so Carrie sent Aiden(?) to deal instead of going herself, and then went round only pretending to apologise so she could talk about herself?

Can't stand her - she is every negative stereotype about women in one bony little bundle BUT the writer of the novel, Candace Bushnell, absolutely HATES women. I read a couple of her other books on holiday once and it's jaw-dropping how open her misogyny is - women who have sex are always sluts, women who don't are frigid bitches.

The four women in SATC are all presented as negative stereotypes - the slut, the career bitch, the mindless Stepford and the needy ditz - because they're the only way the writer can view women. The horror of it all is that hordes of women think it's flattering and like it.

(First time I watched it, I hated Aiden - now I think he's amazing. Can't stand Steve, love Harry. Big isn't actually a character. It might have been better for the flow of the series if he'd never actually been portrayed on screen.)

I felt sorry for Carrie - she was so massively self obsessed.

I think Kim Cattrall is a brilliant actress, saw her in Private Lives recently (Noel coward play) and she was amazing and astonishingly beautiful.

WallyBanters, I think I am a little bit in love with you...

Carrie reminded me of the whiney self-obsessed person that many of us might have been once when we were about eighteen. It was a bit pathetic in a woman of her age.

Hmm, NotYouNaanBread- I tend to see Aiden as a space-invading clinger. Do I need to re-watch it?

I started this just the other day www.mumsnet.com/Talk/telly_addicts/1691387-Im-watching-the-first-season-of-Sex-and-the-City-It-started-off-so-well

And I do wonder if SJP got annoyed playing her by the end? She started off alright but after she got back with Big the second time I knew she'd end up with him. So wrong. It ruined it for me.

I hate the way she gets to sum up the beginning or end of every episode with her bloody got to thinking.

Yes this! And Carrie became more and more a caricature of herself as the seasons rolled on. The other ones too, to a lesser extent. It became harder and harder to believe that anyone could possibly be that self-centered, learn that little from her mistakes, etc. -- it was like she was regressing.

I did love to watch it, but wouldn't enjoy it now. Maybe it hasn't aged well.

(and I agree that Carrie is a self obsessed needy PIA)

Binks don't forget to hold a faraway look in your eye, and nibble your bottom lip, as you skip into the road waving down a yellow taxi with an oversized baguette clutch paid for by your friends solace seeking tidbits.

Very important to skip...

I loved Aiden. I totally loved him. I considered him to have had a very lucky narrow escape.
