I tried cutting my own and storing them in bags... it was not a rewarding task AND all my ice-cream tasted of onion after a few days >.<

WHYYYYY SAINSBURY'S?! Or is it just Norwich that is evil? I can't find it on the online system or in the store...

I'm too busy working at a charge out rate of £161 per hour to chop an onion.

shallweshop · 08/11/2012 22:06

Freshblood - laughing my socks off but surely a bit extreme to blame current economic crisis on frozen onions! Obv, you don't ever cut corners??

SHRIIIEEEKPoolingBearBlood · 08/11/2012 22:11

Have you lot not heard of "lazy garlic"
they also do chilli and ginger

shallweshop · 08/11/2012 22:16

SHRIIEEEK - you are leading me astray ...

SHRIIIEEEKPoolingBearBlood · 08/11/2012 22:18

I'm sure there is vastly more laziness too, just stuff I don't tend to buy :o
I did buy a jar of lemon slices once but havent dared use them in a drink - do they make thedrink taste of vinegar?

Lovefruitsandvegs · 08/11/2012 22:18

I do not buy precut fruits or vegetables because nutrients begin to degrade after they have been sliced. I thought that was a well-known fact. It is of course convenient to buy a bag of chopped onions or other vegetables. I do not need that much. Fair enough if you only buy pre-chopped onions to add some taste to the dish but not because of the nutritional value.

Here is one link I just found about the precut veg.

Pssst. Gia garlic puree Wink. Magic stuff. Lasts for ages. One 5ml spoonful equals one garlic bulb. So easy!

shallweshop · 08/11/2012 22:27

SHRIIIEEEK, think lemon slices a good idea in your gin and tonic (make it a large to mask vinegary taste). As 1 of your 5 a day they must surely counteract the alcohol? Smile

cumfy · 09/11/2012 00:07

Oh yes, garlic puree, it's just tooo easy.

katykuns · 09/11/2012 00:12

I remember the peeled potatoes in the fresh bit of Tesco. Not sure why they stopped making them, but they made good roast potatoes :)

I also buy strong cheddar grated Grin

No frozen chopped onions in my local sainsbury's any more, nor online. But I have found frozen sliced mushrooms and frozen grilled vegetables which are both good with pasta.

LivingInAPinkBauble · 09/11/2012 00:41

Thanks to this thread I now have frozen onions and peppers from Tesco in Norfolk. Stupidly excited as chopping an onion leads to my jumping up and down, eyes streaming dance. If the onions are strong they can even make my eyes water from an adjoining room when DH is cooking!

Startail · 09/11/2012 01:23

Tinned onions make very good curry. Have rather limited freezer space so haven't tried frozen ones.
I love onions, but chopping them is actually painful and I end up standing in the garden as fresh air is the only thing that stops my eyes streaming.

Boomerwang · 09/11/2012 05:30

I've never had streaming eyes from chopping onions. Is it because I wear glasses? I imagine they offer some sort of protection, but not total?

Anyway I said I'd report back on the state of the baby corn, water chestnuts and bamboo shoots and I'm happy to say all of them stood up well to being frozen. The corn was a tad more juicy but that wasn't a bad thing as it soaked up more flavour. Went very nicely in a thai red curry sauce.

SantasComingFace · 09/11/2012 06:31

lovefruit we are taking about frozen, so the nutrients are kept by that process.

Have come rather late to this, but I am intrigued by those who apparently can deep-fry without a pan....

Contact lenses stop your eyes from watering when peeling onions. Also, if you get smelly fingers, rub them on something made of stainless steel (I use the sink) and the smell vanishes. The only reason I haven't tried frozen onions is because Ocado don't sell them, I am a huge fan of frozen herbs, garlic, ginger etc and my freezer stands next to my food prep counter so they are definitely quicker than fresh.

dexter73 · 09/11/2012 07:53

I wear glasses but it doesn't stop my eyes streaming and getting really sore when I cut up onions.

squoosh · 09/11/2012 08:21

Hold a slice of bread in your mouth when chopping an onion and your eyes won't run.

WelshMaenad · 09/11/2012 08:24

Delia uses the Eazy chopped tinned onions. Therefore they are asseptable.

Queenofsiburbia · 09/11/2012 08:25

NOOOOO!
Sainsburys what are you doing? Frozen onions changed my life! No crying, no stinky hands, time saving plus less wastage.
Please tell me it's not true?
