I tried cutting my own and storing them in bags... it was not a rewarding task AND all my ice-cream tasted of onion after a few days >.<

WHYYYYY SAINSBURY'S?! Or is it just Norwich that is evil? I can't find it on the online system or in the store...

One downside would be price. I refuse to pay extra for someone else to cut stuff up for me and put them in a plastic bag. I don't really buy anything frozen though, apart from Ben and Jerry ice cream mmmmm

I've been struggling to find chopped mushrooms. They are handy to have in. Also chopped Garlic is the dogs knackers, I buy chopped herbs too, saves a fortune

RuleBritannia · 07/11/2012 21:28

Storminabuttercup You can find all sorts of mushrooms in tins.

Oblomov · 07/11/2012 21:29

I, based on Mn advice bought 3 bags from sainsburys. Didn't like them. Like DeVere says, the bags are too small. The onions were likes cubes of swede. I was expecting sliced of onion.
Am thus am on the look out for a new place to buy mine from.
So, no loss to me if Sainburys has stopped selling them. saying that, i do nearly all my shopping in sainbsburys, because it is closest to us. so not much chance to get to aldi, lidl etc.

rule I bought some in a tin but didn't like them so much.

Even Iceland have stopped them

Chubfuddler · 07/11/2012 21:33

My time and streaming eyes are worth money. In any case after wastage I think it's just as cheap if not cheaper.

ceeveebee · 07/11/2012 21:36

Waitrose sell sliced red onions, they are fresh but you can freeze them. I only buy them when they're on offer, paid 50p for 2 onions worth which is no more expensive than whole onions

fromheretomaternity · 07/11/2012 21:36

Ocado / waitrose do chopped shallots

fromheretomaternity · 07/11/2012 21:36

Frozen chopped shallots that is

I'm a frozen veg convert. Onions, mushrooms, peppers, corn, garlic etc. Can knock up a curry, casserole with zero mess and waste. They don't taste slimy at all.

I also buy them when they are on offer and use them as a base for a soup. Sainsbury's do other chopped veg too. Makes a great (v quick) homemade soup.

BrandyAlexander · 07/11/2012 21:40

I buy the fresh bags. It's 2 diced onions in the bag. They're in the fresh veg section. They were definitely delivered to me on Sunday!

GreatAuntMaud · 07/11/2012 21:43

Don't they go all sloppy once it hits hot oil and sort of thaws into it? It can't be the same as sauteing a freshly chopped onion?

I chop a moundmountain of onions every single day for cooking. [proud]

[no life]

katykuns · 07/11/2012 21:45

Thanks Dawndonna, I will check it out. The online shop is meant to come from Pound Lane, so not sure why they have disappeared. I looked in the one off Queens Road and there weren't any. All the packets I used to buy from Sainsburys never made my freezer smell... but doing it myself does. They are perfect, I bought the last lot on a deal for 3 for 3.50 or something, got peppers, mushrooms and onions. Don't like mushrooms frozen, but I have bought and frozen peppers and courgette, they really work. Garlic is SOOO much easier getting frozen, can't stand all that faffing! It's no more expensive and it I can use it for months and months. I can't see why anyone wouldn't want them Grin

Why is the fact that they last for years an advantage? Do people visit the supermarket say only once every three years or so, so it's useful not to have to do a top-up shop in between? Hmm [interested]

Fakebook · 07/11/2012 21:49

Frozen onions don't have a oniony smell and I'm sure they've been drizzled in oil or something. I bought some from tesco and they're still in the freezer and will be until I run out of onions and need them in an emergency.

Cromwell44 · 07/11/2012 21:50

I haven't been able to find them to add to my online sainsbury's order for the last few weeks and was going to email Sains to ask them where they had gone. Wandered off and forgot about it 'til now, perhaps we should generate some customer demand and ask for them to be reinstated.
I don't feel the need to justify my use of ready chopped onions but well done to those who chop everything by hand Grin

FreePeaceSweet · 07/11/2012 21:51

I also buy frozen chopped spinach which is nice as I wouldn't know how to prepare the fresh stuff. I love opening a bag of peppers. They look like delicious frosted sweeties. :o
