I tried cutting my own and storing them in bags... it was not a rewarding task AND all my ice-cream tasted of onion after a few days >.<

WHYYYYY SAINSBURY'S?! Or is it just Norwich that is evil? I can't find it on the online system or in the store...

I buy huge bags of onions from Morrisons/ market, then chop them all in Ken, freeze, and put in bags myself. get a ver smug feeling from being so housewifely and thrifty.

Never in my life did I know such a thing as frozen garlic existed! The things you learn on mumsnet!

TheAccidentalExhibitionist · 08/11/2012 10:04

Frozen garlic is great but no where near as strong as fresh garlic so much more needed.

DappyHays · 08/11/2012 10:06

Frozen chopped onions are great. No more tears or stinky fingers after chopping. I'll have to investigate frozen garlic, ginger and chilli.

SoggySummer · 08/11/2012 10:11

They may be back in store after Xmas. I find several regularish "boring" items go missing from supermarkets in the run upto Xmas. I think they get rid of a few bits and bobs to make room for the Xmas crap.

Lovefruitsandvegs · 08/11/2012 10:12

Those onions would have less vitamins unless you do not care.

SantasComingFace · 08/11/2012 10:15

dawndonna I think frozen broccoli is ok nowadays. I buy birdseye, sainsbos frozen savoy is good.

Not sure about sprouts, my dad got the raging shites from frozen sprouts once and it put me right off Wink

OneMoreChap · 08/11/2012 10:18

Un-effing-believable.

If DH & DD are curry hounds, and need mounds of chopped onions.... give them a damn knife.

No reason why you should chop for them! And it's a valuable life skill.

Only need a bit of onion? Slice a bit off a whole onion, and chop that.

Do you buy ready mashed potato?

Chubfuddler · 08/11/2012 10:21

On occasion I buy ready mash. Why not?

Santas - give the sprouts a miss then! Grin

By the way, Sainsbos frozen cherries are divine.

OneMoreChap · 08/11/2012 10:32

Shell peas? ITYM pod them, but yes, the ones I grow.

I buy frozen veg - peas, spinach, occasionally okra.

I'm not particularly smug about anything, but I'd rather use space in my freezers for something more interesting...

Frozen chopped veg/root vegetables/soup mix are ideal if you have arthritis, or are alone... but for a family? Get the buggers to help.

[Oh, and I freeze left-over mash for soups/thickening]

I looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooove frozen chopped onion - because I hate the fresh ones so much.

I hate that your fingers smell of onion for 24 hours after chopping one, I hate that even the mildest onion makes me cry, I hate that if you only need half a one, you have the minging other half stinking out the fridge until the next time you use it.

I know that frozen onions are probably a bit more expensive (if you don't get them on special offer) than their fresh counterparts - but if you were to cost out your time, they wouldn't be!

Dawndonna · 08/11/2012 10:44

i must admit, I buy onions by the sack load from the local market. I do like a cheese and onion toastie. Actually, I like a cheese and onion sandwich, and frozen can't be used for that. But as I said, frozen peppers work out cheaper in the long run and frozen fruit is great when it's not in season. I don't think people should be sniffy about any of these things. There isn't much difference in nutritional value.

I thought frozen veg retained nutrients better?

Veg is veg, regardless of who chopped it.

squoosh · 08/11/2012 11:35

Frozen fruit/veg can be fab.

Peas, raspberries etc. Don't like frozen spinach one bit, will have to look into frozen onions.

SusanneLinder · 08/11/2012 11:46

I couldnt live without frozen veg, speshully onions. Both DH and I have hand problems and the idea of having to chop mounds of onions for a curry fills me with horror.Actually I would be in pain as well.

But then I used them before my injury :o

mummmsy · 08/11/2012 11:46

frozen veg are amazing and allegedly are less prone to losing nutrients Grin

PhyllisDoris

if you really don't really buy anything frozen though, apart from Ben and Jerry ice cream, I quite simply can't see why one wouldn't quite simply just make one's own ice cream, after all, it would mean you wouldn't have to pay someone extra to make it for you and place in a carton oh yeah, i see now

samandi · 08/11/2012 12:17

Have you actually read the thread?

Are you talking to me? If so, yes I have and I still don't get it!

katykuns · 08/11/2012 12:17

I never knew people opposed frozen chopped onion so much! What did they ever do to you? eh?!
