I tried cutting my own and storing them in bags... it was not a rewarding task AND all my ice-cream tasted of onion after a few days >.<

WHYYYYY SAINSBURY'S?! Or is it just Norwich that is evil? I can't find it on the online system or in the store...

Then you're losing the advantage of having chopped onions in an instant MrsDeVere! Grin

CaliforniaLeaving · 07/11/2012 21:51

I chop my own and double bag them in the freezer, no onion smelling ice cream. I too like to just add a small handful to recipes and hate to waste a whole onion. I do the same with peppers. Buy one of each colour, chop them bag them freeze them and I get to have fried onions and peppers whenever I like.

shallweshop · 07/11/2012 21:52

Love frozen onion - only difference for me when used in spag bol, chilli etc, is not in the taste but in the lack of mascara streaked tears streaming down my face!

Frozen onions I don't see the point of as if I only need half an onion then I put the rest in the fridge and use it the next day so none ever goes to waste. Freezer space allocated to more perishable things (kaffir lime leaves, left overs, bread and ice cream)

However, IF I had a massive freezer (and a garage to put it in) I reckon I would get into the idea of frozen onions pretty quickly.

GreatAuntMaud · 07/11/2012 21:56

Just to see what this is all about I googled frozen onions and sainsburys popped up too as a suggested search term. The fifth result down the page was this thread. Grin

FreePeaceSweet · 07/11/2012 21:57

Whenever I buy fresh peppers some always get wasted. The downside to chopping and bagging your own veg is the spattering when it hits the oil. Don't seem to get that with supermarket stuff.

whois · 07/11/2012 21:59

CaliforniaLeaving FYI when making your own, if you very lightly fry the onion and pepper in oil it seems to freeze a lot better. Admit that is a bit more faff than just chopping and bagging tho.

FreePeaceSweet spinach is one of the easiest things to prepare. Comes in a bag, pierce it a few times and blast for a few mins in the microwave. Or put it in a saucepan with a tiny bit f water until it wilts then drain. Or add to your pasta sauce of Urdu or whatever and stir in until it wilts.

Frozen onions £2 per kilo, loose onions 63p per kilo

I cried in my local sainsbury's when they didn't have any for the third week in a row Blush I am pregnant though and when I'm pregnant I can't get the smell of onion or garlic off my hands for love nor money.

Anyway, the nice shop assistant who came to my aid said it was because they are clearing out freezer space for all the Christmas stuff (frozen turkeys etc). So rest assured the onions will be back in the new year! He also walked me to the fresh produce aisle where they sell fresh chopped onion! Not as good, but better than vile onion hands. I then cried because he had been so kind. I need to get a grip.

It's more the volume/frequency of use to me. 1 day a week my mil sits and chops a mound of onions and garlic for the weeks meals, I'm talking hours. Sod that for a game of soldiers. Plus they actually melt down better when you want the mushy for a base sauce. I wouldnt use them for stuff where you want the bite.

Oh and DH cooks more always now he doesn't have to faff about chopping so worth it just for that.

BrandyAlexander · 07/11/2012 22:11

Life is too short to chop onions. Hate doing it. I also can't be bothered to crush garlic so I buy garlic puree most of the time. Sainsburys also do other chopped herbs (eg parsley) and other purees. Lazyitis has settled in well here!

FriedSprout · 07/11/2012 22:16

They changed the packaging to a dark brown in my store. They were not available for a few weeks the came back re-packaged. May be that is happening where you are now?

piprabbit · 07/11/2012 22:19

I use frozen chopped onion because I love cooking, but my increasingly extreme reaction to chopping onions myself makes me so miserable that I avoid them if at all possible. Frozen ones mean I can cook whatever I like again.

piprabbit · 07/11/2012 22:21

Frozen onions - zero waste.
Fresh onions - wasted tops, tails, outer skins and time.

squoosh · 07/11/2012 22:36

Well I never knew there was such a frozen onion sub culture. It must be the new meow meow.

I like those tubs of dried onion crispy things. They're very tasty.

CaliforniaLeaving · 08/11/2012 00:21

Thanks Whois I'll try that on the next lot I freeze.
Plenty of time to chop veg around here, no jobs unless I want to drive 40 miles to the nearest city for work, so I'm home doing all the crap jobs.

Frozen Peppers are far cheaper than fresh. I love them. A bag of peppers does approximately six meals in this house. There are six of us, so six lots of pepper for a quid, or a fresh pepper for 90p each meal. I use the frozen garlic too, and chilli. Haven't seen courgettes, but might give them a try. Don't like onions or mushrooms frozen, though.

Now, can anyone tell me if sprouts, broccoli and cauliflower have improved over the years?

ceeveebee · 08/11/2012 08:48

Waitrose also do a bag of frozen chargrilled vegetables, courgette, aubergine etc. They're very tasty, I mix with couscous or use in sauces

SugaricePlumFairy · 08/11/2012 08:56

Frozen onions was one of my first Mumsnet discoveries, I luff them loads along with frozen garlic, chilli and ginger Grin.

I get quite stupidly excited popping out tiny cubes of garlic into sizzling oil!

samandi · 08/11/2012 09:28

I never knew there were such things as frozen chopped onions Confused What on earth is the point?

Chubfuddler · 08/11/2012 09:32

Have you actually read the thread?

M&s do a bag of frozen diced onion, celery, carrot and garlic. I use it as the base for all soups and curries it is marvellous.
