to wonder why Sainsburys is no longer selling frozen chopped onions?

I tried cutting my own and storing them in bags... it was not a rewarding task AND all my ice-cream tasted of onion after a few days >.<

WHYYYYY SAINSBURY'S?! Or is it just Norwich that is evil? I can't find it on the online system or in the store...

I've just stocked up on onions and veg base mix from Marks and I always buy frozen fruit for smoothies.

I luffs the frozen section! Wink

samandi · 08/11/2012 12:30

I never knew people opposed frozen chopped onion so much! What did they ever do to you? eh?!

I don't oppose it as such ... just don't understand it :-)

mummmsy · 08/11/2012 12:34

samandi what is there to understand?!? that's like me saying, 'i just don't understand fresh veg', when there is clearly a market for it, people growing, selling it and buying it!?!? with their many and varied reasons for it!

anklebitersmum · 08/11/2012 12:40

Frozen onions? Frozen garlic? Wow.

I obviously don't spend enough time in the freezer section..I didn't even know they existed Blush

Not that I'll be buying them. [bleuuuuugh emotion]

The only frozen veggies I have are peas and the pumpkin I chopped & froze after halloween. [smug]

SantasComingFace · 08/11/2012 12:47

Hmm at being smug about veg!

I would much rather by frozen veg than fresh veg out of season.

I'd rather have minimal waste than throw veg away as it's gone off after being man handled by god knows how many customers

Id rather reach in to my freezer and get out veg than spend time and money driving to the shops

GreenEyesAndHam · 08/11/2012 12:52

Like anyone ever gave a shit about the nutritional value of an onion

Grin
mummmsy · 08/11/2012 12:57

lmafo greeneyes, literally just guffawed!

freddiefrog · 08/11/2012 13:24

Lordy, I never knew people could get so worked up about frozen chopped onion.

No one here likes onion all that much, so onions tend to sit around in the fridge until they grow a furry blue coat, then get binned, so for us it's cheaper to buy a bag of frozen as it lasts for years ages. I also hate chopping them

I also buy ready grated cheese too - shoot me now! Grin

Autumnchill · 08/11/2012 13:26

We miss Sainsbury's chopped onions Sad

SHRIIIEEEKPoolingBearBlood · 08/11/2012 13:27

tesco have stoped doing their meat free lincolnshire style sausages :(

shallweshop · 08/11/2012 13:32

Hilarious thread! Have just returned from Tesco having 'panic bought' a bag of frozen chopped onion, just in case they too decide to withdraw it from the shelves for Christmas!!

anklebitersmum · 08/11/2012 14:03

Oh my word, I just made the mistake of looking them up online. £2.00 per kilo

I'd have to save them for best Grin

samandi · 08/11/2012 14:10

samandi what is there to understand?!?

I don't understand why people buy it as all the reasons seem daft to me. Chopping up an onion takes less than 30 seconds, they last for weeks and weeks, wastage goes in the bin (which gets emptied regularly), if you only use half you wrap the other half in clingfilm and stick it in the fridge, I've never noticed the smell of onions on my hands etc. etc.

Of course there is a market for it, and people are quite entitled to buy frozen onions if they like ... I just don't get it! Grin

SHRIIIEEEKPoolingBearBlood · 08/11/2012 14:13

chopping an onion doesnt take 30s for me. It takes about that to remove the skin. The about another 2m to chop, assuming you like little neat pieces.
That said, I have an alligator

samandi · 08/11/2012 14:15

Plus they seem pretty expensive at well over twice the price of fresh ... it's no wonder people moan that they can't afford veg! :-)

piprabbit · 08/11/2012 14:15

samandi I react so strongly to chopping onions that my eyes get very sore and it makes it's very hard to see. Not being able to see make chopping with a sharp knife more dangerous than I like. Having sore eyes is painful. It puts me off wanting to cook anything that needs onion in it.

So...I use frozen chopped onion. My eyes don't hurt, my fingers are safe and I can enjoy my cooking.

Is that clear or do you still not understand my reasoning?

samandi · 08/11/2012 14:16

SHRIIIEEEK ... 2 minutes to chop an onion? Confused What on earth are you doing to it, sculpting it into tiny seahorses? :-)

samandi · 08/11/2012 14:17

piprabbit - calm down, yes ok I can see that for some people who have extreme reactions it might not be all that pleasant :-)

SHRIIIEEEKPoolingBearBlood · 08/11/2012 14:27

Well no, but I on;y ike it in small bits. So top & tail, then peel the skin off. Cop in half lengthways. Small slices across the cross section for both halves. Then gather together, turn round and slice again into small bits x 2. Then get all the large strangglers that escaped the process.

SugaricePlumFairy · 08/11/2012 14:32

Autumn they are still being advertised online.

Shall I order some and send them on to you? Grin

squoosh · 08/11/2012 14:38

If someone doesn't want to chop an onion they shouldn't chop a bleedin' onion.

They don't hand out medals you know. There aren't freezer inspectors coming around to pat people on the head for not 'cheating'.

anklebitersmum · 08/11/2012 14:41

SHRIIIIEEEK don't tail just top. That way you can halve, peel, chop vertically lots, once horizontally and it all stays together for final 'accross onion' chopping without any escapees Wink

mrsmellow · 08/11/2012 14:44

Great thread Ladies! I have never heard of frozen chopped onion and it has prompted chat with DH Grin
So, we decided we will try them, but my contribution is that I use the minute it takes me to chop an onion to make a recipe plan for what we're going to put in the dish - so if you take that away, i fear my cooking will deteriorate Shock
And DH feels that to make space for 2kg of chopped onions, we'd have to take the vodka out of the freezer and he's reluctant.
Also - why are you all keeping your whole onions in the fridge? the protective outer layer will get soggy - they keep best in a cool dry place like your cupboard!
OTOH I will definitely be getting the frozen garlic chilli and ginger.

PostBellumBugsy · 08/11/2012 14:45

I love this thread. Only on MN could you have a full fledged debate about the merits & heinous evils of frozen chopped onions! Tis fab. Grin

Shock

that was the sound of the penny dropping
That will quite literally change my life, what a fantastic idea!
