To not understand the prejudice against asda on here?

Seen a couple of comments about asda on here, seems they are quite looked down on by some. I don't really get it. The food is no better and no worse than the other big names in this area (tesco and morrisons) the prices are low, and the staff are generally lovely and very helpful, at least the ones in my local are. So whats the problem with asda (ignoring the current Christmas add which whilst cringeworthy is not the worst I have seen)

We have an ASDA homestore where I live and an ASDA food shop a bit further out. I only ever go to the food shop near Dd's birthday every year because their baking and cooking goods are cheap and good quality. I bought loads of cake decorations from there last year that I still have in the cupboard.

The ASDA homestore I visit almost every week as its so close to me in the car. It's cheap for beauty products (branded) and nappies and wipes. I always get a good price for things there.

I don't have anything bad to say about ASDA tbh, but I'm not a loyal customer, I do shop around a bit and am lucky to live close to a variety of shops (waitrose and Iceland and Co-Op are 2 mins up the road from me)

It's a strange thing about MN that anyone using the word 'chav' incurs the wrath of certain regulars for hate crimes against the working classes, yet ASDA is openly reviled as being frequented by rough-looking men in string vests and women in hoop earrings accompanied by numerous feral children with poorly-spelt names using trolleys as dodgems.

I shop at ASDA because it's 5 minutes down the road. I love their fish counter but buy meat the the Coop.

Heres what I have learnt on MN ~

SNOBS GO TO ~
Waitrose
Ocado
Sainsburys
M&S

COMMONERS GO TO ~
Iceland
Tesco
ASDA
Lidl
Aldi
Morrisons

Sorry if I have left anything off the list.
YANBU roger I agree with you that some look down on Asda shoppers.
Everyone is judged by where they shop.
I have totally abandoned Tesco as I just cannot stand it anymore.

Seriously Prudence?

A snob is someone who looks down on other people or thinks they are better than other people - therefore just cos I am too lazy to do my own shopping and have a child with SN who cannot cope with going to a crowded supermarket so bought an Ocado delivery pass, I look down on people?

Dame I am sorry you have taken my list so seriously

The list, is not what I think personally just general list of my observations on MN.

I think I classify anyone who looks down on others because of where they shop to be a snob, or who considers shopping at a certain shop to be beneath them, but anyone who chooses to shop anywhere because that's what suits them best is just like anyone else, be that harrods or lidl.
I think I must be lucky in my local asda as its a new one, purpose built, large, airy and clean. The staff are lovely and friendly, good selection of fresh food and a big George section. Despite being in a very deprived area, I've never seen feral children, been sworn at (or heard worse than the odd curse through gritted teeth usually aimed at the trolley which won't push straight) or had any unpleasant experiences at all really. Maybe I just have skin like a rhino or just generally can't be arsed getting het up about stuff, maybe I just don't notice.

You missed Co-op.

I think I can guess where it would go

There is a small market town near us where the main supermarket is Co-op and it's fraightfully naice in there.
There are plans for a small Waitrose going through at the moment though Grin.

Co-op to me is always the small one near my parents that charges too much for everything, has random shortages of basics and has staff that move at glacial speed. It takes 10 minutes+ to buy a loaf of bread. It's not a big store.

I don't like ASDA, but have been in to two or three different stores over the years and have never seen anyone looking 'rough' or been sworn at - or overheard anyone swearing. Or seen feral children.

My nearest Asda is horrid. I really will not shop there (not due to clientele so much as the building, stock and staff). But where my cousins live, their Asda is really nice and my entire extended family shops there. So I think it can depend on the branch.

I do think the food in Sainsbury's is better quality though, the meat especially. But if we could only get Booth's to open down south, DH would be happy.

Gosh, yes, I find the Heinz beans from Waitrose and Sainsbury's much nicer than the disgusting 20p cheaper Heinz beans from Asda.

I don't understand it either op, it's not so much the judgement of the shop itself, everyone has an opinion. It's the judgement of what sort of person you must be if you choose to buy your food there.
I've heard 'Chavsda' bandied about on here a fair bit. I find it utterly crackers, the whole thing.

Don't get me wrong I appreciate value for money as much as anyone else. Lidl and Aldi can be really good value. Asda can be, selectively, but the shopping experience is dire. Tesco is expensive, unreliable and generally crap so not good value for money. Sainsbury's are slightly cheaper and better quality so generally good value for money. Waitrose present the best value for money for me, because the food is generally very good and nothing has to be thrown away, the shops themselves are usually smaller so you don't have to wade up and down the aisles being tempted to buy unnecessary things while trying to find the stuff on the list.

Supermarkets are the only alternatives here, apart from the odd farm shop and deli there are no independent food shops such as greengrocers.

I shop at Sainsburys and Asda. What does that make me?

Also I find them both as stressful as each other. I do however avoid Tescos because I get a bit stabby after being in there for only five minutes.

I shop between Lidl and Asda and my local butchers: anything I can't get in Lidl I pick up in Asda. I prefer Lidl, but don't mind Asda.

Their kids' clothing is very good; and they're my first port of call for baby paraphenalia like sippy cups, bibs etc. Much cheaper than Boots.

Agree: for some reason I can't stand Tescos. It's a horrible experience and I always feel ripped off. Was so glad when Asda came to town.

I would have thought it was as they are owned by Wal-Mart who are generally viewed in a similar take over the world and pants corporate Image as Tesco but on a US scale?

Whenever I've shopped in ASDA some of the food is just rubbish quality - gorgonzola cheese with so little flavour it tastes like cream cheese, lack of basic things like tomatoes and bananas, rubbish pizzas, tasteless meat. My MIL shops at ASDA and her meals are always utterly flavourless. (She makes good cakes though, presumably with ASDA ingredients)

I couldn't give a crap who else shops in the supermarkets I go to, but when I've been disappointed by a shop once I don't tend to go back. Tesco always seems untidy and cluttered. I love Morrisons for the quality of their meat and fish (they're the only supermarket that do fish fresh enough to use in sushi). But mostly I shop online at Sainsbury's. Would shop online at Morrisons if they did it.

The own brands I have tried at Asda have been disappointing. But I think their children's clothes are very good value, and some of their women's clothes are all right too.

I shop at Sainsburys because it's the nearest and I'm used to it. I've done the Downshift Challenge as far as I can go and identified which Basics and own brands are worth buying and which aren't. And I recently discovered that their House wines are really worth trying - £3.29 for a Cotes du Rhone is pretty good.

As a test recently I entered my entire weekly shop into an online supermarket comparison thingy and Sainsburys came out second cheapest to Tesco (by about £1). Waitrose was nearly £15 more.

I used to go to just Tesco but I think its trying to get itself into the snob list and failing miserably. Prices are ridick now. I have stopped going now as I just refuse to go anywhere near it. I shop everywhere but there.
I actually dont mind Asda, I just stare at all the Shameless/ TOWIE stylee people Grin in their onesies, fake uggs and fake tango tan Havent heard any cussing there yet though.

I like Waitrose because the whole shopping experience is better. They have better trained staff who are taught the value of customer service, can speak fluent English and their shops have less of a giant warehouse feel about them.

Yes, probably am a snob about this. I do order all cleaning products, tins etc online from sainsburies! Double snob?
