To not understand the prejudice against asda on here?

Seen a couple of comments about asda on here, seems they are quite looked down on by some. I don't really get it. The food is no better and no worse than the other big names in this area (tesco and morrisons) the prices are low, and the staff are generally lovely and very helpful, at least the ones in my local are. So whats the problem with asda (ignoring the current Christmas add which whilst cringeworthy is not the worst I have seen)

I shop at asda online, If I do a top up shop it goes between sainsburys lidl tesco or lidl. Asda is cheapest for what I buy and if you complain about previous delivery you can usually wangle a free delivery or use the 6 hour slot which is only £2!

Trills · 07/11/2012 19:02

Individual stores are pretty variable.

Your Asda may be no worse than your Morrisons and your Tesco.

From my experience I would say of those three Morrisons is worst, then Asda, then Tesco.

But Sainsbury's is better than all of them.

pickledparsnip · 07/11/2012 19:06

I bloody hate Asda. Not a snobbery thing, just dislike their food. That and the fact that an Asda delivery driver refused to carry my delivery upto my first floor flat when I was 8 months pregnant. I didn't really mind at the time, pissed me off afterwards though. Twat

I hate shopping full stop, especially with a toddler in tow. I order from Tesco now and have it delivered. Pop to Lidl every so often too. Wish we had a decent market, then would get all my fruit and veg from there.

toomanydaisies · 07/11/2012 19:10

Asda shudder
Horrid. Noisy, smelly, horrible own brand food, really depressing vibe.
Feel the same about Sainsburys.
Tesco feels much less crazy and Waitrose is (generally) actually an enjoyable shopping experience.

Own brand food from Waitrose = cheaper than premium brands at asd a/Sainsburys. I'm sure people will disagree and tell me they manage to feed their family of 18 on £34.56 a month from asda. But honestly - I go by the "quality food honestly priced" Waitrose slogan.

MargeySimpson · 07/11/2012 19:10

I use asda for jars/tins/offers. Sainsburys for meat/veg becuase asda has far too much chocolate/frozenmeals/fizzydrinks. Organic ranges and free range is much cheaper at sainsbuys too

Asda never has everything I want to buy, the shop is badly organised and it is a stressful palace to shop.

I am as common as muck but buy most food in Waitrose and top up in Aldi. My dh goes to Asda every now and again for branded stuff, cleaning products etc.

sparkle12mar08 · 07/11/2012 19:13

My closest Asda at 4 miles away is an awful place. I've shopped there on a few occasions for specific things only, and would never go there again if I didn't have to. There's a very definate difference in shopper demographic between there and the Tesco under half a mile away from it, and another difference again between the Tesco and the local Sainsburys. I will go to whichever shop has the best deal for specific things I want, but our general shop will always be Sainsburys. I prefer the quality, the range, and yes, the atmosphere created - it feels much, much nicer to shop in.

FunBagFreddie · 07/11/2012 19:13

I think they will be building an Asda near us, so I'll probably start shopping there sometimes because it will be the nearest supermarket. I am a staunch Co-op shopper though, much to DP's dismay. He thinks it's expensive.

Viviennemary · 07/11/2012 19:13

I think the quality of the food is good but it is a bit of a hassle shopping there especially at weekends. Tesco's is the one I can stand. The staff are the least helpful of all the supermarkets. That's what I've found. And the fruit and veg are dire.

Handsfulloffun · 07/11/2012 19:13

I dont mind Asda - our local one annoys me because the way they lay everything out confuses me. They dont just put all the salady bits together in one aisle, instead they put cucumber in one aisle, lettuce in the other.Angry

Dont get me started on the lack of double trolleys.....or P&T parking spacesWink

Viviennemary · 07/11/2012 19:14

can't stand!

PickleSarnie · 07/11/2012 19:14

Asda saps the enjoyment out of food. You'll never starve shopping there but you'll never get the thrill of finding new and interesting foods. Although I clearly need to get out more if Im finding a trip to waitrose thrilling.

All those bright yellow labelling and vast aisles of junk food just isn't appealing.

Arisbottle · 07/11/2012 19:14

WE also buy mostly Waitrose own and don't spend that much more and to be honest it is often the same price and lasts longer , so in the long run cheaper . I also don't spend ages in the queue waiting to unpack my shopping , pay for it and then pack it all up again.

PosieParker · 07/11/2012 19:15

The two nearest to me are full of people swearing at their kids and shopping with knackered kids at all times of night.

freddiefrog · 07/11/2012 19:15

I used to quite like Asda when I lived back home.

We don't have one for miles here and the nearest doesn't deliver to my area. I do pop into the one near my Mum's for clothes/school uniform.

Morrisons is at the top of my Irrational Shit List. Our local one is dirty, cramped and never has anything on the shelves.

Sainsbury's is the best of a bad bunch here, everything else is either too far away or shit.

PosieParker · 07/11/2012 19:15

However I have to say Asda staff are very friendly and helpful, even on the phone!!

Sugarice · 07/11/2012 19:21

We have a naice Asda Wink and I think their bread is nicer than other s/markets.

I also love their River Cobbler fish which I can't get anywhere else.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 07/11/2012 19:24

I shop wherever I'm near at the time. Couldn't care less which one it is. It's all the same nonsense.

IvorHughJackolantern · 07/11/2012 19:30

Asda do lush baby clothes for boys, one of the few places that do. (Pet peeve). Not that fussed about their food etc. but that's cos I am a Lidl Devotee and the difference in price of a weekly shop between there, and pretty much anywhere else, is eye-watering. I bloody love Lidl.

LFCisTarkaDahl · 07/11/2012 19:34

I don't shop at Asda or Tesco (as far as I can) because Walmart and and Tesco fuck poor people.

Workfare, grotesque profits, minimum wage not living wage, zero hours contracts, screwing farmers ..... the list just goes on.

I loathe them and I spend £8000 on food a year, they're getting as little as possible - I try to put it as local as possible instead.

TakeMyEyesButNotTheGoat · 07/11/2012 19:34

I got excited the other day when the local paper announced a new Asda is to be built in my home town.

I'm sick of Tesco and sodding Morrisons and can't afford Waitrose.

I live a very boring life Sad

BegoniaBampot · 07/11/2012 19:43

Prefer Sainsburys but will shop anywhere if it's handy. Asda though, don't like the bread and bakery section, also feel they just don't have as nice a selection of more luxury goods. Sainsburys is just a nicer shopping experience. Also Asda moved into my little town over 30 yrs ago and decimated the high street with it's little family independents. It sits in an ugly shopping centre and owns all the adjoining units which are empty as too expensive for small business to rent. Can't forgive it for ruining our high street and making it look ugly.

bureni · 07/11/2012 19:45

LFC Same here, I much prefer to support my local shops who supply quality locally grown and reared produce with the bonus of a friendly helpful and personal service unlike the tax evading superstores who use cheap or free labour and who seem to think they can dictate what we eat and when we eat it.

Woozley · 07/11/2012 19:47

True, they are better value for fresh food (if you can find it) than Morrisons or Tesco, but that's not saying much is it?

The shops themselves are awful. Rows and rows of ready meals, frozen food, chocolate, crisps and other snack foods with tiny fresh food counters, and it's like a treasure hunt for anything half decent.

Some of the customers are not that pleasant either, swearing at their kids for nothing or blankly ignoring them, just depressing.

Not a pleasant experience.
