To not understand the prejudice against asda on here?

Seen a couple of comments about asda on here, seems they are quite looked down on by some. I don't really get it. The food is no better and no worse than the other big names in this area (tesco and morrisons) the prices are low, and the staff are generally lovely and very helpful, at least the ones in my local are. So whats the problem with asda (ignoring the current Christmas add which whilst cringeworthy is not the worst I have seen)

I'm all for supporting local traders i.e butchers, fruit and veg etc when I can afford it.

There has been a shop owner in my area of town that has ripped the locals off for years with his inflated prices due to the fact there are no other shops within walking distance.

A sainsburys mini market has opened next door recently and has taken all his customers.

Serves him right really. .

They don't have a choice, the buisness rates have gone sky high this year (again) so its either close down or charge luxury prices. One butcher has switched to delivery only (so no shop front) and I order from them, but most either just close or get even more expensive!

Its the council that set the rates and therefore the prices, not the shops

Mumsnet is just simply a lesson in life every day.

As a simple man, I never knew anything about this Supermarket snobbery.

I use our local Co-op, what does that say?

Being all countryfied round here means that there's loads of butchers, and my favourite is actually loads cheaper than the supermarkets. I get the most fantastic sausages which are the same price for 6 as the luxury supermarket ones, only the butchers ones are three times the size. Proper meat, fresh and with local meat.

It's the health food shop that gets me. Nearly £5.00 for a 100g back of seaweed. You can get much bigger bags for less than half the price from Asian food stores.

I like to support local shops, but if they're charging eye watering prices and they're all poncey, they can sod off.

I like Asda for clothes - I have 3 dds and get a lot of their stuff there Hmm Some of their offers are good on biscuits, sweets which I buy. I find them dear for washing powder and the likes so go to Tescos.

I grew up where my nearest Asda is so can manage the other customers Grin My local traders charged ridiculous prices before the "big" supermarkets came over here - (am in NI) so they can go and shite before I darken their door.

The Asda I go to is spotless and has the biggest baby changing cubicle and "grown up" toilet in it which wins it extra points - take notice M&S!!

Asda online shopping in my area of London is quite simply pants - they stole my money and failed to deliver on a couple of occasions. So that is why I will not use them and think they are rubbish.

Asian supermarkets are the best, used to live near a fantastic one, SO CHEAP! miss it!

I used to live in an area that only had an Asda. It was an awful, awful shop. Rubbish fruit and veg, horrible looking shop, surly rude staff who quite obviously couldn't give a sh1t. Then Waitrose opened. Heaven. I believe that Waitrose is now the most profitable one in the country (it's at Canary Wharf).

I love Asda for clothes but not food shopping unless we are having a party - I can't ever find any 'real' food in there, it all seems to be packaged and processed.

I have always shopped at Sainsbury's with a top up from M&S. Asda is a very successful supermarket (number 2 behind Tescos?) so clearly someone (or a lot of someones!) shops there!

The meat is very poor quality. Very, very poor quality.

Their best quality beef is only hung for 21 days ffs.

lychees, my asda doesn't sell tinned lychees, even in their "forrin" isle (which they always staff with a token ethnic shelf stacker which I find a bit odd, its a fairly white area so its not a coincidence)

lychees are real Grin

Most supermarkets are bad for more 'exotic' fare though. Have you tried getting a good Thai green curry paste? Impossible!

usual I think my Asda must be same as yours. No less fresh stuff than the brand new Sainsburys superstore but with wicker service. I think people see what they want to see. Wrt fruit and veg, Asda buy grade 2 for their smart price ranges. All that means is that its the stuff that other supermarkets won't have because it doesn't look perfect, it can be misshapen or mottled. It has nothing to do with the taste. The crops that are wasted because customers want perfect looking fruit and veg is shocking, Asda will sell some of it. They're also the only supermarket near me that sells Samphire

Used to go there but they kept changing the layout all the time and as it was so massive i would end up losing most of the day trying to find things so gave up.

Asda is brill for George (buy loads of the kiddos clothes there) and the one near us is the only supermarket that does 'effnic' foods we like, like West Indian bun / bread and ackee etc.

However, meat is SHITE and a lot ofthe own brand goods are nasty.
