To take a job on a phone sex line?

Name changer.

I'm skint, on my own with dd who is at school but has a lot of health issues, misses school sometimes and has a lot of appointments to go to.

Finding work to fit in with this is proving bloody hard, I'm not highly qualified!

So I've been browsing work at home things after realising Avon and all that guff isn't for me I came across a company looking for female phone sex chat line operators. Big company, done a lot of googling research and they are legit.

So called them, filled out my application and was offered a start. So logged on last night at 10pm for 3 hours. It was fine. Most of the guys were really nice, some shy, some not, none were creepy! I am an open minded person anyway, and very chatty. I found it very easy to be honest and in those 3 hours I made £12.80 which isn't mega bucks but considering I was sitting in my lounge watching a movie between calls I don't think it's too bad.

I'm thinking I can log on whilst dd is at school and bring in some extra cash.

Will need to register as self employed etc which I will do.

I need to get in touch with them today to let them know what I want to do.

I don't think I could tell anyone though!!

So, thats £4 an hour for sitting in your lounge watching the TV? Where do i sign? Was it fun?

MrsWhoGivesaShit · 02/11/2012 10:55

Go for it.

if it helps you provide for your DD then what harm is there? There is no shame in working hard, regardless of what you do. good luck

AlmostAHipster · 02/11/2012 10:56

It's nobody's business but yours. Be careful though, that it doesn't start to make you feel uncomfortable.

myphonesexdrama · 02/11/2012 10:57

Yeah and I wasn't on calls all that time. Most calls lasted about 6-10 minutes with about 5 minutes between them. Apparently it's busiest at night, I might wait longer during the day but as I get better my call times will increase.

Was it fun? I think it was! They were just normal guys. Nothing weird, some didn't even want to talk naughty.

I'm torn as to what advice to give.

On the one hand, it is easy money, you can care for your family. On the other, I would worry about getting obsessive men, verbal abuse, potential to feel pressured/disgusted etc and also feeding the idea that women are constantly sexually available and that you can 'buy sex'.

I would say don't do it, could you do proof reading/voluntary work that would help towards a future career rather than a job?

HoopDePoop · 02/11/2012 11:00

Ergh I'm not sure. I read an article in a mag saying women who work on these lines end up totally mistrusting and hating men, as they deal with such horrible calls. I suspect you were lucky if your first shift didn't include any serious creeps - although tbh any bloke calling is by definition a bit creepy, no?

But no moral judgement here.

myphonesexdrama · 02/11/2012 11:01

I know what you mean. Callers don't have my number, it's done through their systems.

We're allowed to hang up on someone taking the call to places that aren't legal (under 18, extreme pain, poo, animals etc)

OP posts:
HoopDePoop · 02/11/2012 11:02

Are you trying to recruit MNers?

WorraLiberty · 02/11/2012 11:02

Gosh I didn't know anyone used those lines anymore since there's so much 'free sex' on the internet.

My mate was doing that job in the late 80's and earning around £12 per hour.

If there's still money in it and you're happy to do it, then go for it.

myphonesexdrama · 02/11/2012 11:03

We also don't have to take abuse, I was told we tell the caller we're terminating the call then report to a supervisor who will block them from the line.

"They were just normal guys. Nothing weird, some didn't even want to talk naughty"

You cant possibly know that.. I wouldnt want to be talking to some stranger who was furiously wanking himself off while I spoke to him..

myphonesexdrama · 02/11/2012 11:04

Recruit? Why would I do that? I'm 3 hours into the job, toying with the idea of taking it up permanently!

Worra I thought the same but apparently they're as busy as ever!

Yes, when i looked into this it said that it was busier at night which is what put me off as i don't think me talking dirty to another man is great foreplay Grin It would take an awful lot to disgust me and there are guidelines on what is allowed etc. Also, you make it clear what you will talk about and how they market it. Yours sounds like a good company, let me know how you get on with the day work. I am currently cleaning 1.5 hours a night, with a twenty minute walk there and back, often in the pissing down rain - i get £10 for that. You seem like you have the better deal.

These men aren't buying sex though are they.. They are buying someone to listen to them wank, its a bit sad, for them but hey. Its a service.

MrsWhoGivesaShit · 02/11/2012 11:05

extreme pain and poo, as long as consenting are not illegal! - although granted if that is something you are not into i guess you wouldnt want to hear about it! Grin

lucyellenmum · 02/11/2012 11:06

Worra, i thought that too - i used to use a chat forum but got sick of men asking for phone sex, i am incredulous that people still pay for it, but pay for it they do more fool them eh

DinosaursOnASpaceship · 02/11/2012 11:08

10 years ago I would've thought it was an easy way to make some money.

Now though, I wouldn't be able to get the thought of these perverts wives out of my head. It's sleazy anyway I look at it. I couldn't do it.

I've changed as a person as I've aged and seen in my own relationships and those of friends how fucked up the whole sex industry is and the damage it can do to people. And I couldn't be a part of it.

I'm not judging you personally, if you are comfortable with it and enjoy it then go for it. I judge the men though, and the industry.

lucyellenmum · 02/11/2012 11:08

So tell me, what did they want to hear? Was it as cliched as you describing what you are wearing?

WorraLiberty · 02/11/2012 11:08

I thought it was all webcam stuff now lucy

lucyellenmum · 02/11/2012 11:09

Yes, apparently that is where the real money is Worra i'll have to stick to my mopping then :)

myphonesexdrama · 02/11/2012 11:10

Webcam stuff is popular too but no way!

They did want to know what I was wearing and I was told to make it appealing but realistic so no sitting in your lounge is suspenders!

OP posts:
WorraLiberty · 02/11/2012 11:11

It must be so much easier to be a slim, blonde, 21yr old 36DD when you don't have a webcam pointed at you Grin

Littlemisspoorly · 02/11/2012 11:13

My mate worked for a charity helpline and saddos used to ring up at all times for a w*k for free! She said she stopped helping the charity as she felt dirty and used. She didn't have to keep on the line but she tended to get at least one call every shift and if affected her. She was also peed off as these tss**s also held the lines up for serious/needy callers.

DinosaursOnASpaceship · 02/11/2012 11:14

I had a friend years ago, who used to work as a sex line operator. She was a big woman, brunette and 45 years old.

When the phone rang she became 21, blonde and a 34dd (she would say "I'm a 34dd, so good they named them twice" as one of her lines). She would be sat there with her electric toothbrush at the ready, watching eastenders between calls.

Zalen · 02/11/2012 11:17

Sounds like a great opportunity, a chance to work around your DD's needs and provide a few extras for your family. As long as you keep everything above board as you've said, register as self-employed etc then why not.

Of course if it goes downhill and you find the calls offensive or hard to deal with, and you have to be aware that not all calls are going to be lovely in a job like this, then you can always quit if it's not for you.

And if anyone asks what you do, you're in customer service, all very boring, it's true and why does anyone need to know more.

myphonesexdrama · 02/11/2012 11:37

Customer service! I like that and it's not a lie!
