The it's anti scots thing is just a recent phenomena being stirred up along with She's Elizabeth the first not second that SNP types spout off. As it deflects from answering a real question about independence.

Railnerd · 08/08/2012 00:30

'rebellious scots to crush' was never part of the anthem FFS

Just because my son might sing 'God save our smelly queen', doesn't make that the anthem.

nankypeevy · 08/08/2012 00:41

I've always thought that " Cod Liver Oil, and the Orange Juice" should be our anthem. It's got Hairy Mary in it, some great chat up lines, an unplanned pregnancy and a runaway dad...

Actually, we should have that as a mumsnet anthem...

BlueBirdsNest · 08/08/2012 02:13

errm .....Elizabeth bears lineage from, amongst others, Armenian, Arab, British, Chinese, Cuman, Danish, French, German, Greek, Hungarian, Italian, Monégasque, Norwegian, Old Prussian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Serbian, Spanish, Swedish, Ukrainian, and Yugoslavian ethnicities.[1]

gets about a bit

So what? She's still British.

sashh · 08/08/2012 06:16

If the Yorkshire team are not allowed On Ilkley moor bar'tat the Scots can't have their own anthem either.

GColdtimer · 08/08/2012 07:43

So bluebird, are you saying anyone with mixed heritage is therefore not British? Surely that's a BNP type stance? Unless I am spectacularly missing the point?

SundaeGirl · 08/08/2012 08:16

Ok, BlueBird, we're getting closer to the racist heart of this now... Hmm

Salmotrutta · 08/08/2012 08:25

BlueBird - have you never heard of the Roman/Anglo-Saxon/Viking invasions? Hmm

No-body in the whole of the UK is an "original" Briton unless they can trace a pure heritage back to one of the original tribes (which migrated here from Europe).

Oh and we all came out of Africa anyway.

Bunbaker · 08/08/2012 08:26

"is she (the queen) not german though"

I'm more German than she is, and I'm British. I was born here and hold a British passport. My mother was born in Germany, my grandmother also, and my grandfather in what is now Poland. But I am British.

Scrounginscum · 08/08/2012 09:39

Yabu he was representing the whole of GB therefore the British anthem. I speak as a Scot.

Scrounginscum · 08/08/2012 09:47

I'd like to bet that 99% of British people have an ancestor born abroad if they go back far enough. Britain has hundreds of years history of immigration.

TiggyD · 08/08/2012 09:54

'The Queen is German?'

If a person come to Britain from the Caribbean and gains citizenship, to suggest they or their children are not really British would be seen as horribly xenophobic by all decent people.
The Queens ancestors came over here about 1710(?) and people call her German?!

RustyBear · 08/08/2012 10:11

Actually, of course, the Queen is half Scottish....

Salmotrutta · 08/08/2012 10:34

Ah ha! Now, thing is The Queen Mum was actually born in London (probably the family was "down for the season Grin) so does that not mean that technicaly she was English??

Salmotrutta · 08/08/2012 10:34

technically even!

Latara · 08/08/2012 14:13

My Dad's Grandad was actually born in Scotland to Scottish parents. I inherited his curly hair. My Dad inherited his taste for Whisky.

That makes me next Queen of Scotland.

(well, there's a vacancy if you get independence.... just make sure i get a castle with underfloor heating please.)
