I know that, but both N.I and England use GSTQ when playing football etc. As I stated what happens when they play each other.

Aboutlastnight · 07/08/2012 19:21

I thought Scotland's anthem was Scotland the Brave..

Aboutlastnight · 07/08/2012 19:24

Scotland the Brave:

"(Towering in gallant fame,
Scotland my mountain hame,
High may your proud standards gloriously wave,
Land of my high endeavour,
Land of the shining river,
Land of my heart for ever, Scotland the brave.)"

Better than flower of Scotlsnd which always seems a bit defeatist to me..

BlueBirdsNest · 07/08/2012 19:24

Scotland the Brave is the official anthemn.........flower of scotland is the one most people think of ....tis unofficial I think because it talks about fighting English?

I think Flower of Scotland is better as a singalong song at matches etc so tends to be more widely used.

MakeHayNotStraw · 07/08/2012 19:28

Didn't they sing the different national anthems in the opening ceremony? Choirs of children an' all? Which ones did they sing then? (can't remember myself, apart from Jerusalem which, as someone once pointed out to me, asks loads of questions to which the answer is "errr, no, actually"! I can't listen to it without a chuckle now).

MakeHayNotStraw · 07/08/2012 19:29

I love Scotland the Brave (not Scottish though).

My favourite has got to be Star Spangled Banner, though.

The team who helped him and who he couldn't have done it without and who he thanked and acknowledged were British. If you're part of team GB you sing the British anthem which Hoy clearly enjoyed doing.

Really hate this petty Scottish/English nit picking at every given opportunity.

BlueBirdsNest · 07/08/2012 19:41

can't beat a bit pipes and drums though

Flower of Scotland is cringeworthy (Scot here) - an utter embarrassment. And it is unofficial and irritating beyond belief because it is doggerel

We should have Dougie MacLean's "Caledonia" - much better and not jingoistic. It's all about missing home. So There.

And Chris Hoy was representing GB - so GSTQ is right and proper.

Salmotrutta · 07/08/2012 19:46

Oh - and this thread will end badly I predict.

And YABU by the way.

HugeMedalTally · 07/08/2012 19:47

It is a godawful national anthem, but most are.

It used to also be Australia's national anthem, but we had a referendum to choose a new one. The new(ish) one is still pretty crap, but at least it's ours.

RindersGoesForGold · 07/08/2012 19:48

Competitors from Great Britain and Northern Ireland and all of the UK, including the Channel Islands (Carl Heston) have all done so, so well working as a team and winning a phenomenal amount of medals. Please don't pour scorn on any of it. Hopefully it will be an incredible legacy for our children, and future generations. Rejoice in the success, politics are for another decade day.

TheCunningStunt · 07/08/2012 19:48

YABU. For all the reasons above. He is in team GB. I am Scottish but Britain is our country.

The national anthem is dire and should be replaces with the theme tune to the archers.

Salmotrutta · 07/08/2012 19:49

I like Oh Canada and The Marsellaise.

Oh and South Africa's is lovely - very uplifting.

Viviennemary · 07/08/2012 19:49

YANBU. It should be Scottish national anthem for Scottish winners. Not that awful dirge God Save the Queen.

TandB · 07/08/2012 19:51

YABU
I was at uni in Scotland, was in a Scottish national team, and can belt out Flower of Scotland with the best of them.
But when it is a British team, it is the British national anthem.

What should they have done for Katherine Grainger and Anna Watkins? Play a strange medley of God Save the Queen and Flower of Scotland?

ticktocktimemachinist · 07/08/2012 19:52

Itd be nice but hes in Team GB

TandB · 07/08/2012 19:53

TheCunningStunt - wasn't that suggested by a comedian donkeys years ago? Can't remember who but he did a good impression of the Queen going "do di do di do di do" to the Archers themetune....

TidyDancer · 07/08/2012 19:55

There really is absolutely no reason for anything other than GSTQ to be played. Chris Hoy is British. He is competing for Team GB. Therefore, it would be ridiculous if GSTQ wasn't played.

I don't particularly like our national anthem, but it's what we've got, and it what should be used. It is the only appropriate choice.

But this thread is like an accident waiting to happen. Ridiculous.

RindersGoesForGold · 07/08/2012 19:56

Everyone hates GSTQ though, Scots, English, Welsh, N Irish alike. It is dirge, like the majority of national anthems. The English seem to prefer Jerusalem, not because of the words, but because of the rousing tune . I hate it as an English person. I hate that when England wins, GSTQ is played. I actually hate it as the GB&NI anthem. You never know though, when the Queen finally pegs it, the anthem could change. I live in hope! Grin

Salmotrutta · 07/08/2012 19:56

I think it was Billy Connolly kungfu - on An Audience With Billy Connolly. He pretended to be the Queen sitting on her horse at Trooping the Colour Grin.

Mind you Billy Connolly is very annoying these days ...

BlueBirdsNest · 07/08/2012 19:58

agree's with Salmoturra Caldonia is good..

but I know the word to flower of scotland

OP posts:
TandB · 07/08/2012 19:59

Was it Billy Connolly? I just remember hearing my gran killing herself laughing and coming in to find her doing the "do di do di do di do" bit. I remember it was about trooping the colour.

Wonder if it is on u-tube....
