Yes - The Proclaimers' '500 miles' for Scottish anthem..

(Thanks to whoever suggested that as it's NOW STUCK IN MY HEAD ON REPEAT!!!)

But it's good so that's ok.

Latara · 07/08/2012 20:31

I keep catching myself humming the American national anthem since hearing it on TV - i like it; GB should nick that anthem (but would have to replace America with Britain... i know - Britannia like in Royal Britannia).

(Sorry OP!!)

redlac · 07/08/2012 20:32

Sunshine on Leith is a far superior song!

TeamGBgroupie · 07/08/2012 20:36

bluebirds well he was British when he accepted his knighthood no?

TiggyD · 07/08/2012 20:46

I would row 500 miles
And I would row 500 more
Just to be the man who rowed a thousand miles
to win a gold medal for Scotland

BlueBirdsNest · 07/08/2012 20:48

oh yes......Is Rule Britannia not the English one

Sir Chris Hoy's views on representing Team GB in 2008. Seems like he is happy to call himself both a Scottish and British athlete much to Alex Salmond's annoyance, I'm sure.

My Dad was born in Edinburgh (my Grandad was Scottish and my Gran English) and we all consider ourselves British. If Sir Chris is happy to compete for Great Britain, then who are we to argue?!

Latara · 07/08/2012 20:50

I would like one of the men from the 100m finals to run a 1000 miles to fall down at my door (Usain Bolt or anyone similar thanks).

bronze · 07/08/2012 20:51

Why not have rule Britannia?

RedWhiteAndBlu · 07/08/2012 20:52

The theme tune from Balamory?

Bunnyjo · 07/08/2012 20:52

Bugger, hit post accidentally! And if he is happy to compete as a British athlete, then he is happy to have the anthem of Great Britain played when he wins though I do wish we had a more upbeat and rousing anthem

bureni · 07/08/2012 20:52

Bluebirdsnest, England does not have a national anthem, they borrow GSTQ

bronze · 07/08/2012 20:52

X posts
Rule Britannia would make more sense for GB then something else for England

Fiveflowers · 07/08/2012 20:52

Aboutlastnight I love Scotland the Brave - it's more appropriate as a national anthem than Flower of Scotland (and far more stirring) .

I'm Scottish but YABU I'm afraid, OP - team GB is stuck with GSTQ, awful as it is.

LadyWidmerpool · 07/08/2012 20:54

Flower of Scotland is a dirge, Scotland the Brave is superior in every way. Also YABU.

Latara · 07/08/2012 20:54

Oh no is it RULE Britannia. Thought it was Royal, doh!!

I think 'Land of Hope & Glory' is the English anthem (if there is one) - 'Rule Britannia' is about Britain as a whole i think.

(I would google those 2 songs & check - but cba really...)

JennerOSity · 07/08/2012 20:57

Maybe he is a royalist anyway!

YouBrokeMySmoulder · 07/08/2012 21:00

If he felt that strongly a) he would compete as an indie and b) wouldn't have accepted the knighthood. He is clearly a proud Briton. And I am very proud of him.

louisianablue2000 · 07/08/2012 21:06

YABU, another Scot here who happily pointed out to the DDs that Andy Murray was Scottish but obviously they should sing GSTQ when competing as part of team GB.

dementedma · 07/08/2012 21:11

Flower of Scotland is awful and not an official anthem. Scottish news announcer mentioned last night that Scotland had won another gold medal - this was the medal that the 5 person equestrian team won, only one of whom was Scots. Not just the
English media who can come out with stupid comments. sir Chris Hoy is an absolute gentleman and credit to Scotland AND GB

BlueBirdsNest · 07/08/2012 21:14

thinking about it I think team GB should have this

very English but more fitting if we are not allowing Scottish athletes to be Scottish in their moment of Glory

NovackNGood · 07/08/2012 21:14

Chris Hoy the best thing to come out of Scotland, after the A1.

cardibach · 07/08/2012 21:17

Latara Land of Hope and GLory is about the whole of Britain too - it's a song of Empire (British Empire). If you want a song about England it'll ahve to be Jerusalem.

Latara · 07/08/2012 21:28

Jerusalem is in Israel though; England isn't... i can't remember the tune or lyrics of Jerusalem.

I'm not bothered about an English anthem.

A DORSET anthem however.... Grin

PenisVanLesbian · 07/08/2012 21:31

It's about building a new Jerusalem in England's "green and pleasant land".

It's a hymn so inappropriate for an anthem.
