Latara is a new Jerusalem not that dusty old in in palestine but a new one in Englands green and pleasant lands.

PenisVanLesbian · 07/08/2012 21:34

I vow to thee my country...now there is an anthem. At least it actually means something and is about the country and not one person.

ClaireRacing · 07/08/2012 21:37

YABU, OP.

I don't think he rates representing Scotland much given that he did not go to the last Commonwealth Games. He is undecided about the next ones. If he does win a Commonwealth medal, they will play Scotland the Brave, which is far superior to FoS.

BlueBirdsNest · 07/08/2012 21:42

now i want to vote this as the new GB anthem

He is not undecided about going to the 2014 commenwealth games..........he has said that would be a fitting end

Er, ok, but why rebuild Jerusalem in England when it already exists in Israel (ok obv taking it too literally maybe then...)

BlueBirdsNest · 07/08/2012 21:46

i wonder that too?

OP posts:
PenisVanLesbian · 07/08/2012 21:47

Because England is the best place in the world, of course, and the promised land should be there too.

NovackNGood · 07/08/2012 21:49

Because the christians think there will be a new Jerusalem rebuilt in the future. The British song is a popular hymn at public schools so I doubt you'll get it adopted by the masses.

God Save the Queen is about the best national anthem there is and no doubt the most recognised in the world except in the USA where they stole it and put their own words to it.

LucieMay · 07/08/2012 21:50

I just wish the Scots would have a vote on independence to settle this issue once and for all and either separate or accept they're part of gb.

BlueBirdsNest · 07/08/2012 21:51

well be careful what you wish for

OP posts:
recall · 07/08/2012 21:51

we ought to have the theme from the Archers played

PenisVanLesbian · 07/08/2012 21:53

The best national anthem there is? Are you kidding? Its the worst! How can a whole countries anthem be about one person?

Latara · 07/08/2012 21:53

BlueBirdsNest - good choice, i like it!! But obviously then 500 miles has to be the Scottish anthem. & Tom Jones 'Delilah' can be the Welsh anthem! :)

LucieMay · 07/08/2012 21:57

Why should I be careful what I wish for? If the people of Scotland

Ah yes, of course. The SNP want Independence because they can't stand the national anthem.

That's totally what this thread is about Hmm

I knew someone would get all antsy and bring politics into it. It was almost 100% light-hearted up until you LucieMay.

Jinsei · 07/08/2012 22:30

Yes, I very much doubt we'll have an independent Scotland before the next olympics. I'm glad that they get to vote on it, but I don't think it will go the way the snp would like it to go.

As for the OP, yabu. Chris Hoy has no doubt benefited from the investments in British cycling over the years, and he is competing as part of the British team. Yes, he identifies as a scot, but he has also made it abundantly clear that he's proud to compete as a British athlete - whether you approve or not.

BlueBirdsNest · 07/08/2012 22:30

wll I quite liked Tommy Sheridon

OP posts:
Groovee · 07/08/2012 22:33

YABU

He's competing as GB not Scotland. There's been enough commentators saying team England instead of GB.

And I'm Scottish who doesn't vote SNPWink

Tommy Sheridan is a creishy wee fox.

Champagne socialism at it's worst.

On Radio Scotland tonight they played The Flying Scotsman by Jim McLeods Dance band to honour Chris Hoy, the DS's danced round the room.

I thought Scotland the Brave was our anthem but I've looked it up and apparently we don't have one. Not a huge fan of Flower of Scotland.

I know someone who chose Jerusalem as a hymn for their wedding ( in Edinburgh) just because they liked the tune, the minister wouldn't let them have it!

Uppermid · 07/08/2012 22:50

Ffs. He competed for team GB. Why is that so hard to get your head around?
