To complain if a YHA posts pictures of beef tortilla on my facebook wall (I am a vegetarian)

This morning when I checked into my facebook wall a large picture of a beef tortilla was posted on it from a Youth hostel. I am friends with this YouthHostel having stayed there with family some years ago and had a lovely time. I go because it (and others) are self catering and outdooorsy) I felt sick- I am a hindu vegetaria. I asked the hostelmanager to remove the picture from my wall but instead the hostel defriended me 'for my own protection' AM I unreasonable to think a youth hostelling association should stick to pictures of the outdoors and hostel events and avoid posting stuff which could upset people of different cultures?

You can remove it if you want too.

T'is a bit silly though, do you not ever look at meat?

noblegiraffe · 13/07/2012 18:28

How on earth do you cope in real life? Unexpected all-beef patties everywhere, surely?

Catsmamma · 13/07/2012 18:29

did they really post it on your wall cos that is just wierd?

and it's your wall so you could have removed it yourself.

fairyfriend · 13/07/2012 18:30

Don't be ridiculous, it's a beef tortilla, not a decapitated monkey. Are you from Tunbridge Wells? Do you go round looking for things to be outraged about?

How do you know it wasn't a beef substitute?

puds11 · 13/07/2012 18:31

Really? This is a big concern? When i was a vegan i had to walk past the meat van everyday and i wasnt crying in my cornflakes.

Sirzy · 13/07/2012 18:31

Do you mean on your wall or it showed on your news feed?

Either way you over reacted, surely you don't spend your entire life not looking at anything that contains meat?

catgirl1976 · 13/07/2012 18:31

Is a beef tortilla a euphemism?

Otherwise, YABU.

catgirl1976 · 13/07/2012 18:32

When I heard the rip of the foil my beef tortilla jumped with joy

Birdsgottafly · 13/07/2012 18:32

"AM I unreasonable to think a youth hostelling association should stick to pictures of the outdoors and hostel events and avoid posting stuff which could upset people of different cultures"

I think that it is really difficult to do that, as they do have barbeques which have both beef and pork on, so offence to lots of different cultures and beliefs.

Whilst the UK does do it's best to accept different POV, any organisation that caters for the public, should not take things like advertising to that extreme.

Statutory providers do and they should, but charities and businesses should try to avoid causing offense but in reality there are going to be times were they cannot do that.

puds11 · 13/07/2012 18:33

catgirl i think you have been reading to much 50shades!

Secret7 · 13/07/2012 18:34

If it's a general advert then YABU.

Are you offended if a pizza company post a leaflet through your door which includes kebabs etc? Do you protest if someone sits near you in a cafe eating a burger?

Not everyone shares your views.

LegoAcupuncture · 13/07/2012 18:34

I think you're being a touch oversensitive. It's not as if they showed pictures of the cow being slaughtered beforehand.

Good example, there will be cultures that are fine with a decapitated monkey, or dog, but not a cow.

Consdering that there are MD's posters everywhere, OP, your arguemt doesn't stand.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 13/07/2012 18:36

catgirl ((grin))

funnyperson · 13/07/2012 18:40

It was on my wall- which is a bit different to just walking by something.

HumphreyCushion · 13/07/2012 18:40

YABU.
I think the YH did the only thing they could in this situation.
I assume the picture was in a post that went to everyone that has liked their page or friended them?
If so, the only way they could eliminate the risk of you being offended again is to remove you.
I think it is unreasonable of you to expect everyone to adapt to your tastes and preferences - life doesn't work like that.

funnyperson · 13/07/2012 18:43

Well it has put me right off youth hostels which no doubt was the intention.

OP posts:
SimplySoo · 13/07/2012 18:44

They shouldn't be able to post on your wall if they are set up as a proper organisation page. If they are set up as a personal profile you can 'friend' (rather than 'like') then they clearly have no idea how to use Facebook, you should probably report them for misuse too.

JamieandTheOlympicTorch · 13/07/2012 18:44

They want to put you off Youth Hostels? Why?

HumphreyCushion · 13/07/2012 18:45

I doubt it was their intention.
I expect the intention was to advertise their venue.
I suspect your reaction took them completely by surprise.

DontEatTheVolesKids · 13/07/2012 18:45

I dunno, we wouldn't be surprised if a Muslim person came on complaining about pigs or dogs being posted on their wall (supposing there were loads of them too near the hostel, too).

For that matter, most of us would be shocked if it were horsesteak photo or fried strips of guinea pig lovingly displayed on the plate.

Then again my first thought was "Kinda precious of OP."
Shifting uncomfortably to remove splinters in my arse from fence-sitting.

knowitallstrikesagain · 13/07/2012 18:46

YABU

fivegomadindorset · 13/07/2012 18:46

Barking mad.

EverybodysDoeEyed · 13/07/2012 18:47

Wow - you are really taking this personally! Did you expect them to put a special note on their files to make you an exception for any non veggie food postings?

It was a photo - not an actual beef tortilla delivered through your letterbox!
