Something that came up today whilst watching the jubilee celebrations. The church service came on and the Lords prayer was said my 2 dcs don't know it and havent been taught it in school.

AIBU to be shocked by this apparently I am as we now live in a political correct society and can't teach children these things.

Are you religious?

RabbitsMakeBrownEggs · 05/06/2012 19:56

If they don't go to church and you haven't taught them it, why should they know the Lords Prayer?

SleepingDogz · 05/06/2012 19:56

its a great shame :(

Mine know it.... From school

Ds is 9 and somehow knew all the words last night to Rolf Harris '2 little boy's!!

And other ds, an army cadet, knows all the national anthem

Puts their mother to shame!

WhiteWidow · 05/06/2012 19:57

I'd rather they weren't taught a silly passage that has no relevance to their lives.

TidyDancer · 05/06/2012 19:57

Why should they be taught it in schools? Confused Unless they go to religious school or church, I would think it completely normal and appropriate they don't know these things....

mockingjay · 05/06/2012 19:58

Great shame my hat. If the lords prayer was important to the child in some way, they would have learnt it, wouldn't they?

CailinDana · 05/06/2012 19:58

If you want your child to know the prayer, why not teach it to them yourself? I am really confused Confused

rainbowinthesky · 05/06/2012 19:58

Why can't you teach it to your child? My dc know it but go to catholic schools.

NeverFearWonderWomanIsHere · 05/06/2012 19:58

Well mine don't know it (even though I have it imprinted on my bloody brain) because we're not religious and they don't go to a religious school. Why would they know it, if they're not religious? Confused

Have you taught them yourself? If not, why not?

cantspel · 05/06/2012 19:58

why are you shocked that they dont know something you haven't taught them?

If you want your child to know the Lords Prayer then bloody well teach them it.

misslinnet · 05/06/2012 19:59

Given the low attendance at my local church, it's not shocking at all to hear that some children don't know the Lords Prayer.

I'm guessing that you're not a frequent churchgoer if your DC don't know it.

And unless you're sending your DC to a church school, I wouldn't expect the school to mention it at all.

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 05/06/2012 19:59

If you want your dc to know the Lord's prayer, teach them it! It's not difficult!

lolajane2009 · 05/06/2012 19:59

why don't you teach them it? I know my so will know it when he is older as we are regular church goers but i don't expect all children to know it.

Jinsei · 05/06/2012 19:59

How bizarre. Confused

Surely if this is important to you, you would teach it to your kids yourself! It has nothing to do with political correctness either. My dd goes to a school that supposedly isn't a faith school, but there is regular Christian worship there as in almost every other school across the country. Hmm

And fwiw, I wasn't taught the lord's prayer at school 30 years ago, so it's really nothing new.

Pascha · 05/06/2012 20:00

Its not relevant to me or my family's life so I really don't see the point in learning it except for educational reasons.

magicrat · 05/06/2012 20:00

YABU. If you're religious, teach them it yourself. I wouldn't want my kids to waste time learning this at school.

cocolepew · 05/06/2012 20:00

YABU.

EclecticShock · 05/06/2012 20:00

We said it every morning in School and I never learnt it... I don think its shocking school doesnt teach them it, teach them yourselves if it's important to you. It's hardly a basic requirement of the educational system.

tethersend · 05/06/2012 20:02

Send them to Sunday school at once. In the 1950s.

That'll stop the rot.

margarethamilton · 05/06/2012 20:02

"we now live in a political correct society and can't teach children these things".

What? Yes you can! Are you a DM reader?

And it's nothing to do with being politically correct, I might add. It's just that we aren't as centered around religion anymore as people have realised it's a load of toss

shaka12003 · 05/06/2012 20:04

Yes your right I could teach them it I thought that they would learn it at school as I did. What shocked me was when people were telling me that they wern't allowed to teach it anymore as they arent allowed to force religious beliefs on children. They can however make them all learn the national anthem which is surley forcing royalty on people who may not agree with the royal family.
