To be shocked that children don't know the Lords prayer anymore

Something that came up today whilst watching the jubilee celebrations. The church service came on and the Lords prayer was said my 2 dcs don't know it and havent been taught it in school.

AIBU to be shocked by this apparently I am as we now live in a political correct society and can't teach children these things.

Religion has no place in schools. Why should they know it unless they attend church ?

WithACherryOnTop · 05/06/2012 20:49

YABU. I don't think it's important for children to know it,and as others have mentioned their parents can teach them if they so wish.

I haven't used it since leaving school. I'm an atheist so don't recite it at weddings and funerals either.

CaliforniaLeaving · 05/06/2012 20:53

So I have a question, don't they do assembly every day in the schools now? I know we did when I was in school and also when my oldest son was in UK school in the early 90s.
There is no religion in the schools here and yet each day they have to stand, out their hands on their hearts and recite the pledge of allegiance to the USA, followed by a few patriotic songs.
I'd rather they learned the Lords Prayer myself. Not overly religious, but a little isn't so bad.

CaliforniaLeaving · 05/06/2012 20:53

That was put, not out.

Jinsei · 05/06/2012 20:54

My dd has daily assemblies, no idea if they do the lord's prayer in any of them. Never did at my school!

lovebunny · 05/06/2012 21:14

if you want them to know the Lord's Prayer, teach them. and the creeds. and the general confession.

i'm an anglican. i think in church schools they should be taught church stuff. i went to church schools 4-16 and didn't find out that most Christians believe Jesus is God until i went to university - we were low church, that kind of detail was played down, we focused on God and Jesus as an example - i wish there were anglicans like that today...

Krumbum · 05/06/2012 21:14

Assembly every day! We had it twice a week, once with the whole school and one just our year. Assembly was always a waste of time anyway.

Trills · 05/06/2012 21:15

YAB U and silly

Why should children in general know it?

IHaveAFeatureWallAndILikeIt · 05/06/2012 21:20

Why do kids need to know the lords prayer unless they are religious?

When I was in the girl guides people commented to my mum that I was the only flag bearer who knew both verses of the national anthem, and some of the others were old men who presumably fought in the war! I learnt it for my music badge in the brownies (I also know the third verse, which was banned because its racist)

DeWe · 05/06/2012 21:34

Also now there's several different versions. It's not as clear cut as it was when we were little when we "hallowed in thy name".

My dc go to 3 places that say the Lord's prayer and they all use different versions. The older two know all 3 now, but it does confuse the learning somewhat.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 05/06/2012 21:36

There has not been a standard version of the Lord's prayer for several centuries. It never included the phrase 'hallowed in thy name'.

PommePomme · 05/06/2012 21:39

Shocking. I am blame the parents.

FannyFifer · 05/06/2012 21:39

I am delighted that DS doesn't know it.

TandB · 05/06/2012 21:40

OP, can you explain why on earth, if you are so religious that you attend what is effectively a private worship session at the house of a reverend, you have entirely failed to teach your children the major Christian prayer?

Several posters have asked you this question but you just keep moaning about political correctness.

Your children don't attend a faith school and don't attend church. So whose job is it to teach them about the faith you presumably want them to follow?

It's like a Muslim failing to mention to her children that Islam forbids alcohol and then moaning when she finds them in the local pub.

CorgiBlimey · 05/06/2012 21:40

Er teach them yourself perhaps? Or maybe you don't know it either?

TandB · 05/06/2012 21:41

Oh and YABU. Christianity isn't as all-encompassing in this country as it once was and we are steadily moving towards a more secular society. If you don't like it then it is up to you to act.

PackItInNow · 05/06/2012 21:42

Bloody Nora!!! With a good lot of kids leaving Primary/Junior school unable to read, write and add up adequately, I think learning the Lord's Prayer should be WAY down the curriculum's list of priorities.

I reckon we can have 'values' without being Christian.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 05/06/2012 21:53

Absolutely, kal.

tethersend · 05/06/2012 21:59

Never mind the Lord's prayer, I was shocked and saddened to discover that my DC are completely ignorant of the Milk, Milk, Lemonade (Round the Corner Chocolate's Made) song.

Another example of Broken Britain Sad

enimmead · 05/06/2012 21:59

Every single bloody day at school for 7 years. Plus a bible reading.

I know it. It means nothing to me.

I was surprised no I wasn't, it was quite funny really when the anthem went on to the 2nd verse last night and everyone stopped singing. :)

TandB · 05/06/2012 22:01

Tethers, I know. I sang the Womble song to DS2 with the words changed to include his nickname.

He just looked at me blankly.

What's the world coming to?

ratspeaker · 05/06/2012 22:06

OP
You dont mention which version of the prayer
There@s Anglican, Catholic, the version in certain protestant churches which add the power and the glory ( is that the King James version?) and the one I know in latin for some reason (Pater noster, qui es in caelis )

I also wonder why you are shocked YOUR children dont know it?
Surely if it was important to you , you and your family would teach them.
Do they know any prayers from any other religions?

Do you rely on schools to teach them about religion, sex, manners, life, the universe and everything?
Do you as a parent accept no responsibility for educating your children?
No one is stopping you teaching your children the lords prayer

tethersend · 05/06/2012 22:06

kungfu, that's shocking Sad
