To wonder why all the people on Jeremy Kyle are so strange.

I'm no super model myself, but why do these people have bad teeth, bad skin, bad hair, loopy eyes like they're not with it? Many a time I have heard some of them refer to their partners bad hygiene too. They talk roughly and the women wear clothes that are too tight for them.

Ive been at home alot recently and am catching episodes of it all day. I am thoroughly shocked to say the least. Are these people really a true portrait of Britain's working class? I know it's stupid TV, but I am genuinely intrigued by these people and often sit mouth wide open at the stupid things they come out with and their stories in general.

They might seem stupid but these people have much cleaner homes than us and their DC would never wear odd socks.

TheUnMember · 09/05/2012 23:11

Are these people really a true portrait of Britain's working class?

Working people? On the Jeremy Kyle show? Proper working people with actual jobs? Really? Shock Blimey.

rainydaysarebad · 09/05/2012 23:12

That's all well - but why do they look weird? It's like they're all on some kind of mind warping drug.

LaurieFairyCake · 09/05/2012 23:14

They're not working class.

They don't work, there's no class.

Stop watching that shite - it will make you despair of humankind and force you to rampant cynicism. It will make you hate other humans.

Instead, do anything else. Make jam/read/mumsnet - anything!

TheUnMember · 09/05/2012 23:14

It's not like they're on some kind of mind warping drug. They are on some kind of mind warping drug.

Salmotrutta · 09/05/2012 23:18

OP - I once had the misfortune to catch about 10 mins of Jeremy Kyle (by accident I might add).

Looking at it logically it seems obvious that the sort of person who would willingly go on TV and air their dirty laundry in public (assuming they actually do air anything) is hardly likely to be representative of anyone anywhere.

The people I saw in the brief segment were like no-one I had ever encountered.
I'm sure they exist but not in great numbers thank goodness.

rainydaysarebad · 09/05/2012 23:19

I know I know...I just watched newsnight to try and even out the crap I've watched today. But seriously - if they're all on drugs, and they admit to it, then why don't the police arrest them? They all sit there admitting to all sorts and no one ever gets arrested!

OP posts:
rainydaysarebad · 09/05/2012 23:21

Salmotrutta - Did you sit there with mouth wide open? Because I do! I just can't believe people like that exist.

Today there was a man on there admitting to breaking his ex's back so she ended up with a rod and 6 metal pins in her back. Wtf?!

Heyyyho · 09/05/2012 23:23

They are the underclass. A lot of the people on there have quite obvious MH problems and they ate being totally exploited its horrible.

Salmotrutta · 09/05/2012 23:27

No open mouth here - I switched it off and bleached my eyes and ears.

I did, however, feel an overwhelming urge to leap through the TV and punch Jezza Kyle's lights out. What an oik he is. Angry

That's what got at me - that little sh*t pretending he gave a crap.
Whilst gloating over his bank balance.

Birdsgottafly · 09/05/2012 23:30

"I'm sure they exist but not in great numbers thank goodness"

Unfortunatly they do, the populate whole districts.

They themselves are products of their environments and upbringing.

BertieBotts · 09/05/2012 23:31

The producers/backstage staff of the show get them all riled up on purpose. They stick them in interview rooms and interrogate them with loaded questions until they're spitting feathers before they let them on the show.

Disgusting programme.

Also I think you have lived a pretty sheltered life if you think people like that don't exist, wind-ups by the production team aside :(

raffle · 09/05/2012 23:34

It wouldn't be much of an 'entertainment show' if it featured your average looking, run of the mill, law abiding citizens :)

mirry2 · 09/05/2012 23:36

But why do they go onto the show? Are they paid? And they're all so ugly.

Salmotrutta · 09/05/2012 23:37

Well, maybe I do live a sheltered life but even on one of our pretty rough local estates (which is one of the worst in the LA) the ordinary families (just keeping their heads down trying to make a living) still outnumber the less than industrious ones.
... for the moment anyway.

rainydaysarebad · 09/05/2012 23:40

It really is a disgusting programme. The DNA tests they do to find out the father: utterly disgraceful. There seems to be a lack of self control or morals in these people. I guess I have lived a sheltered life - but I can recognize the types walking down the street.

Salmotrutta · 09/05/2012 23:40

I should say though that my area is pretty rural and not big city.

The nearest big city does have problem areas but with lots of perfectly ordinary families in there too.

I've always thought that we were never meant to live in big crowded cities, cheek by jowl - we probably fare best as a species in smaller communities.

georgie22 · 09/05/2012 23:41

OP, I don't actually think they can be called working class! I agree with BertieBotts that you have obviously led a fairly sheltered life if you don't think these people exist in real life. They are the extreme on JK but I have seen people like this in my working life - I've stopped letting my jaw hit the ground now! I encounter mostly working class people in my job and I think they would be highly insulted to be thought of as similar to the individuals on JK.

rainydaysarebad · 09/05/2012 23:41

mirry2 - I didn't want to say it, but yes! Why are they all so unkempt? Surely it doesn't cost much to at least brush or tie your hair up nicely. And isn't dental health free for people who aren't working? Why do they have no front teeth?

OP posts:
CrispyCod · 09/05/2012 23:42

They all look so weird because they're all inbred.

Popoozle · 09/05/2012 23:45

Have people really never met anyone similar, really never? There are plenty about. I would agree that they represent more of an underclass than the working class though - most I've seen have never done a days work in their lives.

As for the teeth, I can't speak for each individual person who goes on JK's show but, alcohol and drug abuse are both common reasons for young people losing teeth.

If anyone actually hasn't ever met the type of person you see on JK, may I suggest a week at Pontins? That should answer many of your queries Grin.

mirry2 · 09/05/2012 23:47

well, yes I've seen a few around and about but J Kyle seems to recruit whole gangs of them. Where does he advertise and how are they vetted?

georgie22 · 09/05/2012 23:48

OP - if it offends your senses so much why don't you just turn the TV off? You're sounding very precious. The people on JK are hand chosen because the producers know what boosts the ratings. Simple as that.

CrispyCod · 09/05/2012 23:49

Or try Market Street in Manchester, plenty of them hang out around there.....usually shoplifting.

rainydaysarebad · 09/05/2012 23:54

Popoopzle - I have "seen" these type of people. They're normally walking around town during the day with the whole family. But I have never "met" anyone like that, and I don't particularly want to either.

Georgie - I don't know how I'm sounding precious, but the more I am shocked the more I want to watch! I'm not home tomorrow (thankfully!) so won't be watching it, but when there's nothing else on TV and I'm breast feeding a 4 month old it's good entertainment and passes the time!
