Seriously, when is it gonna sink in to people that if you accept an invitation to have dinner in someones home, it's only polite to eat what they give you.

On what planet is it ok to do anything other than eat what your given?

It was roast beef by the way, and the guests were british. I didn't give them lambs brains.

fucking twats

I would never expect anyone, adult or child, to force down something they didn't want to eat just to be polite. That strikes me as really controlling and odd. When guests come round to mine I let them serve themselves and always joke that nothing is compulsory. It's much less awkward for everyone that way.

I have no problem with people leaving anything on their plate.I would not expect anyone to eat something they didnt like.I once was served steak which the hostess had cut an envelope in and stuffed it with oysters.I struggled to eat it and in the end i gave up as i would of been sick. Its ridiculous to say that people should eat what they dont like. The best way is to serve from hot dishes/plate and let people help themselves so they get to choose what they eat.

Presumably, most people will be given a choice of drinks then and there.

This really is about how you were brought up. Of course, everyone's entitled to take a specific ethical or moral approach being veggie or muslim, or even to one or two things grossing them out (anchovies/kidneys/carrots/whatever) but beyond that it's just so...um...unsophisticated to behave fussily about food. If you're turning down food because you 'never eat salad', 'can't do slimy stuff', fat on meat makes you boak, won't eat meat off the bone, etc, etc, you just look parochial (as someone else pointed out).
