To get dd to pay for her own hair?

Me and dh normally pay as present or treat round birthday/xmas because she normally has a cut and colour (£75). But she wants it cut today so roughly £35-£40 unless she goes to a junior and might be a bit cheaper.
I cant afford to pay for it this month, have had to pay for full time childcare on a part time wage as i start new job on monday so thats £500 im down.

She has £40 easter money and £20 from babysitting but when i said she could use that she said 'thats all my money nearly gone then' Hmm. To which dh replied 'yes welcome to the world'!

So AIBU to make her pay for her own haircut today? My only other option is to put it on my ever expanding credit card

Actually your other option is to say No to her having her hair cut.

i pay 40 EURO and i'm a grown woman with long hair and i find THAT expensive for a trim that takes 5 mins.

think you need to find a cheaper hairdresser

dont put it on CC thats stupid if its already on way to being maxed.

she has money, if she wants it cut get her to pay.

otherwise you say you will pay for a tenner haircut somewhere else.

memoo its a mess, she hasnt even had it cut since before xmas.
Shes almost £16.
Unfortunately thats how much it costs round here, my salon charge £48 for cut and blow dry and thats not even a city centre salon, my neighbour pays £75 Shock

Find another hair dresser or go to your local college where you can get it cut by a trainie for next to nothing.

If it's a mess she may be getting teased, etc at school so I can understand her wanting it done now. Can she pay for it now and then after pay day you give her half the cost of it back?

I had to go to my mums choice of 'the cheapest hairdressers available' unless i paid for it myself as that is all she could afford. As soon as I had a job all be it a saturday job when i was 15 that paid naff all I chose to go somewhere more me. Personally i think YANBU.

If she wants an adult haircut, ie cut and colour, then she should be paying for it out of her own money...

I would say to her for her to pay out of her own money and you will reimburse when you next get paid.

I don't expect my boys to pay for their hair cuts. They have it done every six weeks and it costs £35 for two of them. Not a lot in the grand scheme of things, but their hair is short and they are only having it cut.

I pay £20 for a cut and blow dry at my hairdressers. Find a new hairdresser!

In normal circumstances i would of course pay for her haircut but like i said im £500 down this month going from no childcare to full time childcare so am absolutely skint.
The cheapest i have found is the junior at my salon (£25), or £29 at another salon.
The boys have their haircut but it costs £7 so slightly different Wink

My mum cut my hair until I was 16. Then I cut it myself. Coloured it myself and still do.

Even now I only get my hair done every 3 months. £21 for cut and blow dry. Grin

I guess I'd say well I will pay for the cut - as parents do need to pay for their DCs haircuts up to a certain age - but not for the colour as that is a luxury.

So if you go to a salon, get them to break the cost down for you.

So what else is she going to spend her "easter money" on....

(not sure why a 16yo would be getting money for easter anyway.. but surely the point of it is to spend it on something she wants.. like a haircut).

Otherwise, take her to a cheaper hairdresser if you are the one paying for it and cant afford posh salon prices.. there are plenty of places everywhere that are cheaper than £35.

My haircut costs c.£50 which is my one Wink extravagance and which I can afford. It is entirely possible to get it done cheaper, a mobile hairdresser, college, backstreet salon (it's not possible you live in a more expensive place than me!) but I prefer not to. If the cost would use "all my money" or have to go on a credit card there is no way I would pay it.

I think your DH is right, at 16 she's old enough to understand choices have to be made. It might be all her money gone, but it sounds like it'll be money you don't have gone. She's earning babysitting money, so she should be contributing to her own luxuries

I am with tough it's a HARCUT not a bloody posh sweatshirt...you're job is to help her out still.

I remember my Mum kind of stopped buying me clothes and paying for hair at around this age and it's too young! I had to work from 14 to get clothes which is not a bad thing...but it's still hard on a young person. She used to buy me my coat and shoes for the winter...but I had to get the rest.I'll never do that to my dc...haircuts aren't a luxury....colours and extensions are different.
