To get dd to pay for her own hair?

Me and dh normally pay as present or treat round birthday/xmas because she normally has a cut and colour (£75). But she wants it cut today so roughly £35-£40 unless she goes to a junior and might be a bit cheaper.
I cant afford to pay for it this month, have had to pay for full time childcare on a part time wage as i start new job on monday so thats £500 im down.

She has £40 easter money and £20 from babysitting but when i said she could use that she said 'thats all my money nearly gone then' Hmm. To which dh replied 'yes welcome to the world'!

So AIBU to make her pay for her own haircut today? My only other option is to put it on my ever expanding credit card

Tell me again wy a 15 year old needs her hair coloured?

SoupDragon · 21/04/2012 11:32

I dud offer to pay her back when I could afford it.

As to why a 15 yo needs their hair coloured - probably the same reason I had a blonde fringe at the same age!

SoupDragon · 21/04/2012 11:34

dud = would.

alemci · 21/04/2012 11:44

sounds very expensive. we pay about £26 in the Greater London area for a wash cut and blowdry.

wish my dd would let me pay to get her hair cut, it is too long and straggly IMO.

TheBigJessie · 21/04/2012 11:59

Why does any young woman need her hair coloured?

TheSoggyBunny · 21/04/2012 12:18

If she is unable to wait, then a bit of scouting around may turn up a cheap or free haircut.

Our local college charges £3 for a wet cut by a student, I have been a model at a few local salons, paying between £0 and £20 for a trainee to do it. (in salons charging £50 plus)

If she isn't willing to do the research, to find the cheap cut or turns her nose up at the idea then she pays full price at her usual place.

I don't think its a good life lesson for you to pay for an expensive cut this month.

Alternatively she styles it differently - ties it in a ponytail or something - until you can pay for a cut. Again she could look into this herself.

Do the mumsnet haircut on her ;)

YANBU- she is nearly an adult.

Gradually building what she pays for now, may help her with managing her finances when she moves out.

007alert · 21/04/2012 20:03

a) wtf is the mumsnet cut?
b) op said she had her hair cut before Christmas - possibly 4 months ago. A decent cut should last that long and not look terrible. I have paid a lot for haircuts in the past and once every 6 months kept it looking good.
c) if op doesn't have the money, she can't pay for it regardless, and def shouldn't put it on cc. There are worse things than looking a bit unkempt from time to time.

HappySeven · 21/04/2012 20:16

My hair is cut and coloured (I buy the colour) for £11 by a mobile hairdresser. My hair's not stunning but I've paid (a lot) more and it's looked worse. I'd be tempted to pay for a trim but not a colour.

Is there really nowhere cheaper? Training colleges are often looking for models round here.

Fiendishlie · 21/04/2012 21:05

I coloured my hair at home this afternoon, I bought the dye in poundland.
I have a lovely mumsnet-cut that I do myself.
I have a highly paid job and consider myself quite well-off, go figure.

mosschops30 · 21/04/2012 21:40

She went to a new local salon, paid £22 and loves it Grin

Well, that's good then. Glad she's happy.

BellaVita · 21/04/2012 22:11

Sounds like a win win situation all round Smile

PooPooInMyToes · 21/04/2012 22:11

Why is it such a tragedy that she hasn't had her hair but since before Christmas? That's not that long!

I get mine cut rarely because i just can't afford it. Perhaps once every couple of years!

If she has a high maintenance hair cut maybe she should rethink that.

Imo with all the talk of colours and nice shops and labels, i think she sounds spoilt.

BellaVita · 21/04/2012 22:19

PooPoo, I have mine cut every six weeks. I like it to look nice all the time. It makes me feel nice to have nice hair. I am sure it would make a 15 yr old girl the same if her hair is done too. I am not spoilt and I very much doubt she is, a haircut is part of natural grooming.

My boys also have their hair cut every six weeks, they like their hair styled and if this makes them happy then I am too.

mosschops30 · 21/04/2012 22:22

poopoo do you have teenage dds?

OP posts:
BellaVita · 21/04/2012 22:31

Well if she does I cannot see them visiting the hair dressers very often that's for sure....

bringmesunshine2009 · 21/04/2012 22:33

Can't you spilt the cost?

PooPooInMyToes · 21/04/2012 22:58

Moss. No i don't, why? I was one once though!

PooPooInMyToes · 21/04/2012 23:11

Bella. Every six weeks for all 3/4(?) of you!? All year, every year!? That must cost a bomb. Its a luxury, a nice luxury, but by no means even remotely essential for having nice hair.

I have children although not teenagers and i wouldn't and haven't chosen to give them high maintenance hair do's.

You can most certainly look groomed without the whole family spending a fortune at the hair dressers every six weeks. What's that . . . 38 or so haircuts to pay for a year? (based on you having 3 boys)
