To be a bit disappointed in Kate Middleton?

When visiting Fortnums, apparently she talked about what a struggle it is to make tea properly with "dried tea leaves". For someone who has not ever worked full time, had dependents or any particular constraints apart from media interest, I thought she might be a bit more interesting and competent. She still seems to spend her time giggline and hair flicking and being generally self conscious.

All this talk about Kate being a good role model is ridiculous. Well actually it isn't, if you still live in the 50's.

Now women are expected to at least do something while waiting to get married/not get married at all.

Kate was never a good symbol for modern women.

Moester you seem to have joined Mumsnet merely to have a pop at royalty.

Nyac · 22/04/2012 12:15

Do women actually need role models? It seems very patronising, as if we can't decide who to be ourselves.

I thought the point of Kate, like the point of Diana, was to help the British newspaper industry and to keep the Royal Family popular with the plebs. So from that point of view she's doing a good job.

Her Art History degree was actually vocational given that she and her husband are going to own the royal art collection at some point. It's why there are so many poshos on those courses - they need to know how to manage their Rembrandts and their Canalettos.

I don't know if anyone's said this, but she has worked full time. She used to work at Jaeger.

Kate Spade - I do believe it was Jigsaw Kate Middleton worked for.

Part time as a buyer.

If I understand correctly it was very part time (one day a week?) and she packed it in because of 'the media'

Correct me if I am wrong folks Smile

Gigondas · 22/04/2012 14:03

Dunno about how long was meant to work there but it was jigsaw and that was reason given .

bettybat · 22/04/2012 15:07

It's not her, though personally I find her a bit bland and meh. It's the lazy media around her who have built her up into this desirable creature and perpetuated the damaging myth propagated by Disney that women who wait around a million years for their prince to come and save them will be fulfilled when they finally marry.

That is the exact opposite of what I wish for my (future) daughters. It's not about working or not working - though I don't think she's actually done that much in her life (part time for Jigsaw, web designer for her parent's company site - which really makes me laugh). It's what the media have let her come to represent - a girl who quite literally waited around for her prince, and celebrated her triumph like she had actually done something worthy when he finally married her.

Also, and I don't know why this has irritated me so much so Hmm at myself. But Simone de Beavoir being before anyone's time is irrelevant - she published books in the fifties, before a lot of our times, I'd imagine! She was a role model because she was a brave, vivacious, talented, daring, shocking writer.

ApocalypseThen · 22/04/2012 15:56

Well I don't care for her, and I really resent her being promoted as some kind of a role model for young women. She's thin a vacuous woman who married well. Nothing more. Other than that, she's silly, vacuous, has never worked. It's so old fashioned and depressing.

She strikes me as a pretty dull, uninteresting sort of a person, to be honest. The sister -Pippa- is apparently livelier but looks about 45 is not as pretty as the press pretend and something of an embarrassment, behaviour wise.

KateSpade · 22/04/2012 16:45

Oh dear! Thats me totally wrong. I'm not a huge Middy fan, and i dont think Pippa's bottom was anything special at all.

But i wouldn't want her lifestyle, even though she may be queen, its just something i feel i wouldn't particularly enjoy.
