To be a bit disappointed in Kate Middleton?

When visiting Fortnums, apparently she talked about what a struggle it is to make tea properly with "dried tea leaves". For someone who has not ever worked full time, had dependents or any particular constraints apart from media interest, I thought she might be a bit more interesting and competent. She still seems to spend her time giggline and hair flicking and being generally self conscious.

Why do people assume this?

She has never given the impression of being anything than a vacuous clothes horse.

scottishmummy · 04/03/2012 00:54

she very much is a speak your weight smile and twirl royal
that's the whole point - an asinine what she wearing face for brand Windsor
less likely than Phil to offend, and better in heels too

SlinkingOutsideInFrocks · 04/03/2012 06:46

30 year old woman in 'chooses a different life path from the next person' shocker...

And yes, I'm sure that Wiliam, who could have his pick of women, would choose to spend the rest of his life with a 'vacuous clothes horse' as his companion.

SoupDragon · 04/03/2012 06:56

I think that is an important thing to remember - unlike Diana who appears to have been chosen for Charles, William chose Kate himself.

SlinkingOutsideInFrocks · 04/03/2012 07:32

Harry seems to think she is great craic, and I think he probably knows a thing or two about that. Grin

sunshineandbooks · 04/03/2012 07:50

I think whatever she does she's going to receive criticism. Ultimately, she's entered into a marriage contract with the heir to the throne, which is a pretty big deal. As such, it involves much more than hoping to spend the rest of your lives together and requires her to undertake a state role and conform to expectations. If she steps outside that box just a little, she will be subject to the wrath of the establishment and not a little of the same from the general public (Diana received a LOT of criticism that was conveniently forgotten when she died). She's doing the job she's supposed to be doing exactly as she's supposed to be doing it. Being pretty, a little dull, and completely uncontroversial (you can't get more uncontroversial than tea leaves) is part of it. I'd say she's probably doing a good job in that respect. Rather her than me though.

whoputmeincharge · 04/03/2012 08:15

I've got a degree, and a masters, and don't know how to make proper tea with leaves, a pot and all that. And I LOVE tea. goes off to get out the Yorkshire tea bags whilst shuddering at some of the vacuous comments I've made whilst making small talk shamefully remembers the "I want to be a spoon" incident in one particularly long silence

whoputmeincharge · 04/03/2012 08:16

BTW OP YABU

Pornyissue · 04/03/2012 09:45

What do some people on here want? Jordan as the duchess?!

Give me Kate any day, she is great and a much better role model than most women her age in the public eye.

Much better

Mrsjay · 04/03/2012 10:13

lol @ using her degree History of art wasnt it ? hardly a vocational degree , and she is patron of art charities she did work wasnt she a buyer or something for a clothes shop/firm ,

using her degree

seeker · 04/03/2012 10:23

Oh Ffs. Exactly how is she a "role model"?

SoupDragon · 04/03/2012 10:28

She shows your daughters that it is possible to marry a prince even if you are not a princess.

What better role model could you hope for? [arf]

I do think she has behaved impeccably though. Unlike some other royal incomers.

noddyholder · 04/03/2012 10:31

I loved Diana although I am anti royal in general she was more anarchic and rock and roll than teh sex pistols!

Westcountrylovescheese · 04/03/2012 10:36
Grin
Mrsjay · 04/03/2012 10:36

AT LEAST SHE isnt hand picked and unspoiled that was traditonal for an heir to marry Hmm

scottishmummy · 04/03/2012 10:47

giving up work to traipse about after dh isn't good role model
here's an idea encourage your daughters not to play wee wifie,to maintain autonomy - that's good

jollyoldstnickschick · 04/03/2012 10:47

At least she didnt ask the fortnums employee 'are you here on the workfare scheme?,how useful for someone on JSA to be able to brew so naicely' Grin

OhdearNigel · 04/03/2012 10:54

She was visiting the tea counter on Royal visit. She has to make appropriate small talk.

OP, I would love to know what fascinating conversation you would have with a person showing you loose teas - with the whole world watching and gagging for you to make a cockup. No doubt you'd have had a debate of Oxonion proportions

Mrsjay · 04/03/2012 10:54

She isnt traipsing after him though he is away working she does her own Duties and she is Royal now its slight different , and its not her job to be a Role Model people need to be their own Role Model not look up to celebs and Royals ,

Mrsjay · 04/03/2012 10:55

Slightly* She is a working woman just because she isnt at the office 9 to 5 doesnt mean she is a simpering little woman saying yes dear ,

OhdearNigel · 04/03/2012 10:56

And the feted Princess Diana only had one titchy full time job in a nursery - and stopped that as soon as she got engaged as she was mercilessly hounded by the press every single time she tried to go to work. Maybe you aren't old enough to remember that

Pornyissue · 04/03/2012 11:01

She is educated
Is a classic and natural beauty
Has grace, dignity and decorum
Remains an enigma. Why do I want to know all?
She is lady like

Yep, I would like my dd to aspire to have those qualities.

scottishmummy · 04/03/2012 11:03

dear god such sycophancy
unless youre multimillionaire whose daughters attend malborough, well prepare to be disappointed

marrying well is not an achievement

Pornyissue · 04/03/2012 11:09

I'm sure Kate is crying into her designers guild pillow over your comments Scottish mummy. I'm really sure.

scottishmummy · 04/03/2012 11:10
