spingspong · 13/02/2012 00:56

Worth doing?

BrightnessFalls · 13/02/2012 00:58

The Beckhams do loads for charity. They dont keep all their squillions. I dont get were all this vitriol is coming from? They use the NHS, they are thankful to the NHS staff. They just do it quietly. Not everything they do is in the papers.

I dont resent anyone. Yes, Jordan et al get on my nerves but, I really dont give a shit how these people make their money. Whether its through a "real" job or not.

bubbagump · 13/02/2012 01:03

So if she was sahm you wouldn't be horrid about her? only because she has tried her hand at something.

I think that Katie Price is an astute business woman and a good mother to Harvey.

Not sure about Kerry Katona, I just don't know enough about her.

For VB I think she might actually be quite good at what she does.

For me, I am a useless lump of shit, but that is fine my dh is happy, I'm happy, the dc are happy, but I can hardly slate another woman.

ComposHat · 13/02/2012 01:08

If anyone here seriously thinks David Beckham isn't talented or doesn't work hard to have established and maintained a career as a professional footballer at the level he has is beyond daft.

What he is paid to play football is down to market forces few could hit a cross like he could, so he was able to command stellar wages. it is hardly his fault that teachers/nurses etc. aren't remunerated to the same level.

PushyDad · 13/02/2012 01:38

In terms of skill, there are better players than DB. In terms of singing ability there are zillions of people who can sing better than VB, Yet, there they are, worth millions. They are obviously doing something right :)

ComposHat · 13/02/2012 01:55

Yes possibly a handful of better players in right midfield than Beckham during his pomp. But he was still a supremely talented footballer.

You don't get into and maintain a place in the united treble winning side, win La Liga with real Madrid and 100+ England caps without bring an exceptional player.

He is trading on his reputation at LA Galaxy now, but this idea that he only had the success he's had due to his image/looks/celebrity status is totally disingenuous.

differentnameforthis · 13/02/2012 04:24

Is she actually on someone's payroll?

Lots of people aren't on payrolls, as such (self employed, volunteers) but still are doing a 'proper job'

I volunteer at a popular tourist attraction, I work on Sundays (9-5) mainly. There are only 2 paid staff where I work, who do not work the weekend at all. There are about 30-40 other volunteers, inc shop staff, tour guides, maintenance people etc. who are there all hours, even doing tours late into the night.

Are the two who are paid more deserving of the 'proper job' title, just because they are paid? Or are all of us? People who go out of our way to make sure the place can open & run, be safe & fun for all to visit? How about the shop manager, who shops for food/drinks/snacks in HER OWN TIME so we can sell refreshments to our customers?

MissTapestry · 13/02/2012 05:50

Op, you keep saying she's never done a days work in her life, but what on earth do you think she did pre-spice girls? Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't she work in a supermarket? Do going by your own previous posts she either did do a days work because that's a 'proper job', or she didn't do a hard days work because she presumably didn't study for it which means it wasn't a proper job!

Grin
Seriously, those pair barely register on my radar most days, but I hardly think that without knowing her full timetable you can say she's lazy. Plenty of people have had loads of money and then frittered it away/lost it in the recession/made poor business decisions etc. If nothing else she's talented at holding on to what she has and managing the pair of them so that they keep making more millions. I wish I had half her apparent drive for success.
Now, if it was ME you were calling lazy and talentless I could understand, and I do have a 'proper job' Wink

KwaziiHunt · 13/02/2012 07:32

She would have been crucified if her designs were shit. She's hardly the most popular person is she? I don't believe she is a success simply because of who she is.
She is clearly a good fashion designer. People like her clothes and wear her clothes.
I don't know how much 'work' she does on a daily basis, but I suspect it is more than me.

Certainly the amou t she is paid for hours worked would be more than some perhaps more worthy jobs, but that's just the way this world works.

MrsCampbellBlack · 13/02/2012 07:43

Seriously - you think being a fashion designer isn't a job?

And really - if she wasn't doing the designs/very involved don't you think that would be out there by now as oh so many people were desperate for her to fail.

ConstanceChatterley · 13/02/2012 08:30

Erm, how is being a footballer not a proper job? Have you any idea of the level of fitness and training needed to play at that level? Yes, he might be paid more than is strictly necessary for the job that he does but if that's what he's worth and someone's willing to pay it...

As for VB - I can't remember whether anyone linked to it up thread but you should read this Guardian interview - it's obvious how hard she works and how involved she is in the design process (the bit where she talks about the print match ups and the costs/profits involved shows she knows her stuff about the finance side of it too).

GlueSticksEverywhere · 13/02/2012 08:37

do i sound bitchy? maybe its because i get £8 an hour for wresting knives off of head cases....

Is that allowed to be considered a proper job then?

no really i am not being bitchy, but have either of the beckhams ever had a "proper job"?

Really it's not for you to decide whart is a proper job or not. Who the feck do you think you are!? The job police?!

is getting paid millions to stand in your underwear or kick a ball a proper job? is being a very weak singer a proper job?

Really I am totally baffled as to your perspective on what having a job actually means. It just means someone pays you to do something. You adding the "proper" bit just shows your prejudices.

(btw I am a designer, and yes it's a proper job!)

GlueSticksEverywhere · 13/02/2012 08:41

fuck me sideways....im actually gobsmacked that people are defending a woman who does nothing but get her hair and nails done.

Ok so she's a fashion designer and a mum to 4 children, one of which is a baby . . . I doubt she does nothing but gets her nails done!

Frankly you sound like a bitter twisted jealous b!

Ifancyashandy · 13/02/2012 08:47

Do the people who design for Next, M&S, Boden, the police uniform you wear et al not have proper jobs then?

What about football managers and agents who negotiate the deals worth millions? The song writers and producers who helped create the Spice Girls sound? The TV producers who put them on the telly?

Where do 'pretend' jobs end and 'proper' ones start?

porcamiseria · 13/02/2012 08:54

bitchy, I quite like them.

runningwilde · 13/02/2012 09:03

Blimey op the more you post, the more you sound Like you have a problem... Chill out - and you dont know how hard or not she works however much you try to screech that you do!

worldgonecrazy · 13/02/2012 09:16

What is a 'job'? Isn't it whatever you do that earns you money? Therefore football or fashion design are both 'proper' jobs. They may not be normal jobs, but they are still jobs.

I will happily hold my hands up and say I think VB is great though I am a teensy-bit jealous. Though not even DB could make the baggy shorts in his "H&M" underwear range look good.

NeverKnowinglyUnderstood · 13/02/2012 10:05

OOh Vicar taking VB out of the equation who are you to decide what counts as a "proper job"

She does work hard, she has enough money to sit on her arse and go from holiday to holiday, or become a lady who lunches (there are plenty of them around) but she doesn't.

She jets all around the world doing the leg work for her fashion work whilst managing 4 children. - which we all agree she doesn't have to do for the money.

Although in the past they have had challenges in their marriage, surely they should be applauded for working at it and coming through the other side?

If this was someone who wasn't in the public eye I doubt you would be so passionately unpleasant about them.

worldgonecrazy · 13/02/2012 10:21

Isn't VB a secret mumsnetter, though I'm not sure where she would find the time. How heartbreaking it must be to read such vitriol.

MarshaBrady · 13/02/2012 10:25

It doesn't matter if someone else does the drawings it is her that is running the label and directing it.

Which is why she won designer brand of the year not designer of the year.

It doesn't matter, it is still her success.

jesuswhatnext · 13/02/2012 10:25

worldgonecrazy, i should think she is used to it Sad i will never understand why people envy those who had the balls to try, do well etc. neither of them were born into money, they have had to make their own chances in life, why knock them for it?
