To think that if you have a clock on the mantlepiece it needs to go in the middle?

Or am I being anal? My children say so. I don't think I am, but I need support from the MN jury. How could the clock go on one end? That would be wrong.

Right now it goes plant, photo frame, photo frame, CLOCK, photo frame, body sort of sculpture thing, flowers.

But clock in the middle. Yes?!

Clocks on the mantlepiece, you say? How quaint.

I think a symmetrical, clock in the middle is very unimaginative personally, so YABU.

There are lots of ways to get an aesthetically-pleasing non-symmetrical mantelpiece that actually looks more satisfying to the eye if you know what you're doing and get the balance just right. Many of them don't even involve clocks. Wink

RatherBeOnThePiste · 06/02/2012 20:28

Quaint?
No clocks?

Objet d'art = twiggy shit Grin

LoonyRationalist · 06/02/2012 20:29

Non Centrists are very very wrong. Many of you have far too much stuff on your mantlepieces. My (very ugly) fireplace is on my profile & whilst the fireplace itself is fugly it's adornment is not Wink

Objet d'art = the lovely Valentines card that DS1 has just brought home from Beavers! Ruins my sophisticated mantlepiece arrangement completely!!

RatherBeOnThePiste · 06/02/2012 20:30

I'm thinking of getting wooden knitting needle twiggy shit, it would reflect the crafty type I am

LoonyRationalist - I commend you - that is absolutely as central as the middlest thing I have ever seen.

Weasleyismyking · 06/02/2012 20:32

wish I had a mantlepiece Sad I feel very left out. I have a sideboard does that count?

RatherBeOnThePiste · 06/02/2012 20:32

loony - tis minimal but perfect. No nonsense. Clock in the centre. End of.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 06/02/2012 20:33

I think shrubbery would spoil it

OP posts:
RatherBeOnThePiste · 06/02/2012 20:33

Weasley - do you have a clock in the centre?

Acceptable things on the mantelpiece include children's artwork and invitations to film premieres. As long as the clock stays in the middle.

RustyBear · 06/02/2012 20:36

But those niches on my mantlepiece aren't symmetrical to start with, so it would be a bit pointless to try to balance everything else. I have to embrace my lack of symmetry...

SlinkingOutsideInFrocks · 06/02/2012 20:39

Twiggy shit is twiggy shit (I am conjuring up Dunelm Mill here, people Shock); it is not objet d'art.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 06/02/2012 20:39

No Rusty - fight it, or all hope will be lost.
Clock in the middle...

Weasleyismyking · 06/02/2012 20:42

It currently has a changing mat but I'm about to move that and reclaim the lounge

RatherBeOnThePiste · 06/02/2012 20:48

it's about aesthetics.....

RatherBeOnThePiste · 06/02/2012 20:48

Noun
objet d?art (plural objets d?art)

  1. A work of art with some artistic merit.
  2. An artwork exhibited for the purposes of decoration or the reflection of social status.

In other words - twiggy shit.

I rest my case m'lud.

Sparklingbrook · 06/02/2012 20:59

I heart Dunelm, Sad

RatherBeOnThePiste · 06/02/2012 20:59

Yourself included, obviously, since you took time out of your busy day to drop in...

RatherBeOnThePiste · 06/02/2012 21:07
