to think that those Mnetters who think bootcuts are Mum jeans and we should only wear skinnies are either a size 10 or smaller, and/or 5ft 6 or taller?

Surely people should wear what suit their figure? Skinnies only seem to look flattering on tall and/or slim people if you ask me! Aren't most women pear shapes with bigger hips and thighs and therefore would suit bootcuts much more?

Discuss.

Arent tunic tops mumsy anyway? Who are we fooling?

flapperghasted · 17/01/2012 10:57

I'm 5'11 and wear boot cut and wide leg. Skinnies aren't made big enough for my calfs. I have very large calfs. I am currently about a stone and a half overweight, but even if I lose that, I'll still have bigger than average calfs. Always have had. When I was a skinny waif, size 8/10 there were skinny jeans I couldn't squeeze into. Now I'm a 16, I've got no bleedin chance!

noddyholder · 17/01/2012 10:57

Tunic tops are mumsy definitely.

flapperghasted · 17/01/2012 10:58

Anyway, I am mumsy. I'm a 47 year old mum. I don't particularly feel the urge to dress like a 19 year old these days and I like tunics, boot cuts, cardigans (including waterfall types) but I do draw the line at Per Una. Just my own preference...

OldMumsy · 17/01/2012 11:02

Ribeno, I was wearing skinny jeans in my 20s, they were fash then. With a mans shirt, mans waistcoat, a donkey jacket and pixie boots. Rock n Roll eh?

mousyMouse · 17/01/2012 11:06

I have big thighs, skinny/slim trousers that fit my waist don't go far up my knee... so it is boot cut curvy for me...

extremepie · 17/01/2012 11:06

I'm 5ft4 and a size 14/16 - I always wear what I like and what looks good on me regardless of what is in fashion at the time, always have done!

Usually that means bootcuts/flares because they just look better on me than skinny/straight leg.

I've only ever had 1 pair of straight legs that looked half decent on me but I wouldn't rule them out in the future if I found some that I liked that looked nice and lost a bit of weight :D

coraltoes · 17/01/2012 11:06

Ribeno, yes in the 90s I wore boot cut. But I also wore leg warmers in the 80s. Fashion changes

MrsHankey · 17/01/2012 11:08

I mostly wear slim or skinny (but not super skinny) jeans/trousers, usually wear long boots, mostly buy from Dorothy Perkins. I'm 14/16 but have slim legs, quite evenly proportioned, 5ft 6.

People who say they are size 12 but wouldn't be able to fit into size 12 skinnies, what do you mean? Confused

Didn't get into skinnies at first but got first pair a couple of years ago and no more wet/muddy bits round bottom of jeans so thats all I mostly wear nowGrin

Do have smart wide legs for more dressy look.

dexter73 · 17/01/2012 11:11

I was wondering that too Mrs Hankey! If you say you are a size 10 but can only fit into size 14 jeans then aren't you a size 14? Confused

sheepgomeep · 17/01/2012 11:12

primark do high waisted skinnies which are a godsend for me. I'm naturally highwaisted and tall. Most jeans dont fit my hips and i'm a size 14. I dont have the money to spend on fashion so I wear what fits my pain in the arse shape

oldmerryolesoul · 17/01/2012 11:12

I wear skinny or straight cut jeans as they work best when I'm on my bike

TroublesomeEx · 17/01/2012 11:12

I wear bootcut rather than skinnies. But that's because I wear clothes I like rather than because someone has declared them "in fashion".

So in the same vein, if I liked skinny jeans, I'd wear them.

noddyholder · 17/01/2012 11:15

Primark skinnies are brilliant

Ephiny · 17/01/2012 11:17

"I was wondering that too Mrs Hankey! If you say you are a size 10 but can only fit into size 14 jeans then aren't you a size 14? "

What I meant by this is that my waist is a size 10 approximately (26"), but I have quite 'sturdy' legs so some very slim-leg jeans won't go over them. In the case of skinnies, looking at the ones I see people wearing, I doubt they would even go over my calves, unless very stretchy material. I have a similar problem with boots.

Maybe that means I'm actually a size 14 in denial Confused, though most of my clothes are a 10, occasionally an 8 or 12 depending on the shop.

Ribeno · 17/01/2012 11:20

I know fashion changes but some of you are saying they are unflattering. When they were the most prevalent jeans, did you still refuse to wear them on that basis?

MrsHankey · 17/01/2012 11:27

Ephiny It probably does depend on your shape, one of my friends wears a 12 but has much bigger legs than me (I'm 14/16, I have to be very skinny to get in a 12).

Although when I first bought 'slim' jeans I realised than the fit is pretty much the same on hips & thighs as bootcuts (usually quite fitted anyway) and stops the wet/muddy bits at the bottoms problem (walk a lot, live in the counrty).

noddyholder · 17/01/2012 11:29

There are bootcuts that are hideous too short square bum horrible colour. Slim bootcuts that fit look good on most people. In the 90s I wore small kick flares and slim jeans and flares sometimes!

Bogeyface · 17/01/2012 11:29

Ribeno, I think bootcuts are unflattering and hated the fact that you couldnt really get decent straight legged ones for years! I didnt wear them if I could find straight legs.

latrucha · 17/01/2012 11:30

I am 5'6, size 14 and curvy. Straight and skinny jeans look terrible on me, so I don't wear them. Bootcuts for me all the way. Don't care what you say.

Straight leg jeans make me look about ten times fatter than I am- skinny jeans are a bit more forgiving because you can get the stretch-type ones, which is basically the only sort of trousers I can get over my thighs. I've tried flares and bootcuts and I can never get them all the way up, even though they flop off my waist. Hmm I like the way boot cut jeans look but they tend not to be stretchy anymore (they always were a few years back) so they're off the list.

I am tall- 5'10" so I am largely accepting of the fact that no clothes will ever fit me. Tunic tops are 100% legit and non-mumsy, tho- they're basically the only thing that will reach the waistline of trousers on me. Confused

I hate trousers, they're poorly cut and there's never enough material in any I can afford, so they fit ludicrously. Primark skinnies are the only ones I've felt comfy in in literally years, and a pair of Biba ones I got massively, massively reduced (still £20) but that's not rly a practical solution to rely on. Grin

MabelOrange · 17/01/2012 13:37

Bodies, they were called, Bumble and jolly uncomfortable.

I'm amazed how much some of you know about jeans. Being fashionable sounds, well, exhausting.

I wear bootcut because they're comfortable. I'm between a size 10-12 (depending on where I shop) and am 5 foot nothing.
And I don't have 'mum hair' - it is scraped back into a hideous ponytail but it grows too fast to have it short, and it makes me look like a German lesbian.
Not that there is anything wrong with German lesbians, I should point out.
