to think that those Mnetters who think bootcuts are Mum jeans and we should only wear skinnies are either a size 10 or smaller, and/or 5ft 6 or taller?

Surely people should wear what suit their figure? Skinnies only seem to look flattering on tall and/or slim people if you ask me! Aren't most women pear shapes with bigger hips and thighs and therefore would suit bootcuts much more?

You can wear skinnies if you are older and fatter. As long as your top is long enough, and your boots are tall enough to hide the skinny ankle bit. The advantage of getting a bit older is thst you care less!

nooka · 17/01/2012 05:56

My dd looks great in skinnies, although not so good in super skinnies (plus they were quite difficult to get off!). But she is 11, 5'5" and has the figure of a dancer. To be honest she looks pretty fabulous in everything right now [proud mum emoticon]

I on the other hand look best in bootleg, mainly because I am tall (5'10") and wear flat shoes so bootleg are about the right length for me. When i was a teen I wore drainpipes, and to be honest looking at the photos of my drainpipe black jeans, bright grandad socks (because there was always 4-5inches gap) and DMs I really don't think it was a great look! If I wore that now I wouldn't be on trend at all, just a bit daft.

But then my favourite trousers have always been cords, so I'm probably a bit sad anyway Grin

I can't wait for skinny jeans to go out of fashion! And I think they're on their way out :-)

www.glamour.com/fashion/blogs/slaves-to-fashion/2010/09/buh-bye-skinny-jeans-sleek-70s.html

I'm a size 12, normal weight and 5'6, and I can't wear skinny jeans. I'm just too curvy, it's hard enough to find jeans that fit around the waist and hips as it is, but skinny jeans just seem so much worse. Often I pick up a size 12, and can't even get them over my big calves and thighs. If I go up one or two sizes to find something I can actually get on, the waist is absolutely massive. I have only bought one pair of skinny jeans since they've been in fashion, and I think that was a fluke.

I think most of my jeans are slight boot cut or straight leg. I'm not really sure to be honest. What I do know is that I pick jeans that I can get on, that fit around the waist AND the hips so that they don't gape when I sit down, and that are comfortable.

I've been so annoyed that there is so little choice other than skinny jeans over the past few years, and annoyed that apparently I'm unfashionable for not wearing them. Perhaps the fashion industry should make something that fits and flatters my shape, rather than expecting me to fit into what they want!

PerryCombover · 17/01/2012 06:49

Jeans are not for all.

If you look like a parsnip in skinnies, try straight legs.
If straight legs don't do then maybe jeans aren't for you.. unless you are v tall, slimish and have a mild flare below the knee.

Wide legs and flares look TERRIBLE on anyone short or with short legs or fat
Ditto bootlegs.

Wear decent trousers, they are more forgiving

ninjasquirrel · 17/01/2012 06:51

Skinny jeans look fine on me down to the ankles and then my feet look massive - totally out of proportion. And boots over jeans looks way more mumsy on me. Love my boot cuts that cover up my comfy clumpy shoes - they will come back in, just you wait...

Bunbaker · 17/01/2012 06:51

In my experience skinny jeans are made for women with no hips and waist or they are so low cut that they need to be hitched up all the time. I ummed and aahed about buying some for ages and finally took the plunge a couple of years ago. I wish I hadn't bothered as I just find them too uncomfortable to wear and only wear them occasionally.

Like some other posters on here I have a small waist compared to my hips (12" smaller) and find buying jeans a bit of a trial. However, the jeans world is now waking up to the fact that womanly shaped women also like to wear well fitting jeans and there is more choice: Gap curvy, Levi curve and my Saltwaorks ones that I picked up in TK Maxx for £16 a few months ago.

cumbria81 · 17/01/2012 07:09

I am a slim size 8 but skinny jeans look horrific on me. I'm a cyclist and have massive ugly calves and thighs which is probably why

molly3478 · 17/01/2012 07:10

I wear all skinny jeans or leggings and do it with short tops a lot, as well as long. My work uniform is short long sleeved top and leggings. I like them lots but I am 5 foot 3 and 7 stone 3.

FellatioNelsonsDog · 17/01/2012 07:14

YANBU.

bochead · 17/01/2012 07:58

Size 10, five foot nine & I'll stick with nicely fitting boots cuts or straight cut ta velly muchly purleese. No skinny or drainpipes here. With motherhood I aquired a semblance of dignity & a sense of modesty. I wear sensible black shoes/hiking boots 99% of the time.

Simple but effective is my personal style & stick with what I know suits me as I can't afford new basic items (jeans are a weekend staple) every season.

Most important is that my jeans are cut in the pelvic area for a woman's bum, waist and hips - so many jeans are based on men's body shape & just aren't flattering. Camel toes and skinny jeans should be a criminal offence whether you are a size 8 or 28 imho.

I don't think its about fashion its about fit. I have been wearing skinnies for years at least 6/7. They are a staple in my wardrobe but they aren't the only jeans. You have to get the fit right.I like them for the girdle effect Grin

laptopdancer · 17/01/2012 09:06

What are the best jeans for a flat arse? (er, bottom)

OldMumsy · 17/01/2012 09:08

Fabby I am 53 and my skinny jeans look great thank you very much! Size 10 long leg since you're asking.

noddyholder · 17/01/2012 09:08

I have a flattish bum. Tight skinnies give it a bit of shape or boyfriend jeans are good. I wear all types apart from high waisted as long as they fit you they will be ok

waterlego6064 · 17/01/2012 09:18

I have no idea what's in fashion, I never do. I have skinny jeans and bootcut jeans and some which are somewhere in the middle. All of them came from charity shops in my quest for the perfect jean. Every pair I ever wear, no matter how well-fitting to begin with, end up slipping down my hips. I have no waist or hips so I wonder whether I'd be better off buying teenage boys jeans.

I don't care whether other mums think I look 'mumsy'. One woman on our school run wears leggings with massive (deliberate) holes in them. I'd rather look a bit frumpy than look like I'm trying too hard.

OldMumsy · 17/01/2012 09:27

Waterlego, snap. I have got all my jeans from charity shops and eBay. I have a boyish physique apart from the boobs, in fact I bought my shortie wetsuit in teenage boy size. Tip for you, try finding some nice belts, works wonders for me in the keeping the trews up department.

Think Fabby is jealous, she is very judgy of older women.

Kikithecat · 17/01/2012 09:28

I'm after a bit of advice here: someone said wear skinnies with ballet pumps. OK but what do I wear to keep my feet warm - surely socks of any kind would look awful?

I do have a pair of skinnies even though I am nearly 50 (gulp) but only wear them tucked into boots. As soon as my boots come off I look like my granny used to look when trying to look hip in 'slacks'.

waterlego6064 · 17/01/2012 09:29

I keep meaning to buy belts OldMumsy!

GetOrfMoiiLand · 17/01/2012 09:29

I don't have any bootcuts, my faves are straight cut slim fitting jeans, I have several pairs from French Connection and Top Shop, but my faves by far are (don't laugh) a pair of slim fit jeans from Jack Wills, of all places. They fit brilliantly.

I have a pair of flares but these are different from boring bootcuts, which I think are very dated.

KWL51 · 17/01/2012 09:37

Skinny jeans tunic top or stripes Breton style top is the mum uniform around here it would seem. With converse or ballet flats in the summer and uggs in the winter.
So if you live in the Thames valley and want to avoid looking mumsy don't wear skinny jean!
I'm now a 12/14 and still hate jeans I just don't find them comfy. On a day to say basis though I wear smart dresses, tights and heels as I work in a smart office. Weekends tend to be leggings with long tunic tops or shorter dresses using the leggings more like thick tights.

coraltoes · 17/01/2012 09:41

Straight cut jeans doesn't have to mean skinny fit or cigarette leg!boot leg emphasise how fat thighs are...a straight non skinny pair mask thighs well, hug bums and look great.

coraltoes · 17/01/2012 09:42

But yes I am a size 10...so maybe that has clouded my opinion somewhat.

Ribeno · 17/01/2012 10:43

Right.... what did you all wear before skinny jeans became popular? Don't you all remember a time without skinny jeans you bootcut bashers?!!!!

Ephiny · 17/01/2012 10:53

I am size 10, but still wouldn't wear skinny jeans. I doubt I could even get them on - would probably have to go up to about a size 14 to get them over my legs/bum, and then the waist would be comically large.

I try to wear what suits me, and what fits and flatters my shape, regardless of whether other people consider it boring or unfashionable. I'd look awful in skinnies, the fact that they're fashionable doesn't change that!
