to think that those Mnetters who think bootcuts are Mum jeans and we should only wear skinnies are either a size 10 or smaller, and/or 5ft 6 or taller?

Surely people should wear what suit their figure? Skinnies only seem to look flattering on tall and/or slim people if you ask me! Aren't most women pear shapes with bigger hips and thighs and therefore would suit bootcuts much more?

Mum jeans are not determined by the cut of the pant leg! Mum jeans are determined by the crotch to waiste measurement. Basically, if it comes up to your belly button, and are generally shapeless, you are looking at mum jeans.

mum jeans

not mum jeans

WowOoo · 18/01/2012 10:51

See, ThisisaNickname, I would call those Gran jeans. I do see what you mean though.
I have some cords that fit your description.

I wear them for gardening only after looking in a mirror and thinking wtf are these hideous things I bought.

noddyholder · 18/01/2012 10:53

Blimey those are both hideous!

MixedBerries · 18/01/2012 10:56

Now then, I'm with wowooo, they cross the boundary between mum jeans and gran jeans! My mum wears them and she's now a gran. Except my mum wears them a bit too small so they cut into her arse crack. Eeeek. Apart from that, she's quite stylish.

snowmaiden · 18/01/2012 11:22

The first ones are def. granny jeans,
The second ones certainly are mum jeans,

I think bootcut when worn like this are acceptable.

MrsHankey · 18/01/2012 11:37

ThisIsANickname, top ones are definitely Gran jeans or 'really out of date' Mum jeans.

Bottom pair are more stylish mum (thinking white stuff, fat face) but still quite 'mumsy'.

MarshaBrady · 18/01/2012 11:40

These are ok.

So it appears it is ok to use the term bootcut again.

ViviPru · 18/01/2012 11:54

Snowmaiden has it. I decree it so.

Problem is, once you're over a sz14 (as I periodically am) boot cut which may be acceptable in SMs link start to look like this. I'm not keen, personally. Its a really fine line.

(Pedant disclaimer, I know these start at sz18 but my point still remains)

snowmaiden · 18/01/2012 12:31

Shopping in Whitestuff is enough to make anyone mumsy!

emrys · 18/01/2012 12:33

Net a Porter are selling every shape of jean under the sun atm, more skinnies than not, but there are bootcuts galore, boyfriend, straight leg... www.net-a-porter.com/Shop/Clothing/Jeans So bootcut lovers can now officially ignore the MN skinny jean police.

Despite being reasonably tall (5'5") and really quite skinny (6-8), skinny jeans don't look good on me as I have mahoooosive dancer thighs. Seriously, each individual thigh is only an inch smaller than my waist!!! I prefer dresses Grin

And I'm a real woman btw, even though I'm skinny and clothes in shops don't often fit my proportions of broad shoulders, tiny waist, elephant thighs.

'I am 5'7" and a size 12. I have 34" legs. I wear skinnies, straight and bootcut. I think they all look nice.'

I'm exactly the same. I like to wear my skinnies and straights with flats and jumpers/tops and my bootcuts with heels and jackets........

Bunbaker · 18/01/2012 15:06

"Why the hell can't we have jeans in a combination of hip size and waist size?"

Yes, yes, yes. Waist size and leg length are meaningless to me because most jeans in my waist size don't go over my hips, and I agree with your other excellently made points bettybat.

I tried on a skirt in M & S yesterday that was a size 12. It fitted beautifully on my hips and was at least 6 inches too big on the waist. Hence my comment on their policy of only making skirts for square shaped women.

dexter73 · 18/01/2012 15:18

I imagine it must be much easier to make a skirt/trousers that is straight up and down rather than having to adjust for a smaller waist and put darts in etc.

emrys · 18/01/2012 17:11

My mum has a tiny waist and big hips/bum and swears by Levi Curve jeans, which account for differences in hip:waist ratios: Levi Curve ID

Bunbaker · 18/01/2012 17:34

It is interesting that nowadays jeans manufactureres are accepting that not all women are built the same. I have tried on Levi bold curve and they fit like a glove. What I would like to know is whether they "give" after wearing for a while as I don't find tight jeans comfortable, and I wouldn't want to buy a size bigger and then find I am hitching them up all the time.

Popbiscuit · 18/01/2012 17:36

Oooh, Emrys! That sounds exactly like what I need. I'm going to seek those out. Thanks Smile

southeastastra · 18/01/2012 17:38

my levis has definitely 'given' Grin wish they were a little tighter! though i don't tumble dry them and only wash at 30 as they're indigo

laptopdancer · 18/01/2012 19:24

Was watching the young 'uns at the university today and saw lots of boot cut......mostly legins, shorts and tights and bootcut. No skinny jeans in sight (except on the boys...skinny and very colourful jeans).

StarlightMcKenzie · 18/01/2012 19:29

I don't understand jeans at all. I just wear ones that fit me and they are pretty much ALWAYS skinny on me whatever the cut as I have an hourglass figure and am a short arse.

skinny meaning clinging. Jeans have never been anything else. I find the idea of different types quite baffling.

nooka · 18/01/2012 19:43

You can have baggy jeans too. I agree that all my jeans are close fitting (I really like bootleg cut trousers, but my jeans are I think straightcut), but dh would never wear anything clinging, so he wears a loose cut. As does my 12 year old son - if he wore skinnies everyone would see how thin he was which would make him very unhappy. This is not a problem for dd, but then her knees aren't bigger than her legs.

wildstrawberryplace · 18/01/2012 20:18

ViviPru

Yes, but look how much worse the same model looks in the straight leg jeans.

bringmesunshine2009 · 18/01/2012 20:47

My ultra fashionable client turned up in boot cut jeans today. Therefore they are officially back 'in'

Feminine · 18/01/2012 20:49

Boot cuts didn't go anywhere.

The only way to get them wrong, is to wear them too short.

SlinkingOutsideInSocks · 19/01/2012 01:29

Well, there are a couple of others ways to get them wrong as well. Grin. Shade*, hip-waist ratio, what you wear them with, etc, etc.

But equally, there are lots of ways to get them right. The right length is the obvious one. The right belt and shoes, as well. And yes, totally agree that they didn't go anywhere.

  • IMO there is no blanket 'wrong shade', just to muddy the waters further be clear - it all depends on other variables.
VivAldi · 19/01/2012 11:30

It all seems so complicated, but I think I've found the answer.

You can wear any style you like, as long as they're not shit.

HTH.
