to think that those Mnetters who think bootcuts are Mum jeans and we should only wear skinnies are either a size 10 or smaller, and/or 5ft 6 or taller?

Surely people should wear what suit their figure? Skinnies only seem to look flattering on tall and/or slim people if you ask me! Aren't most women pear shapes with bigger hips and thighs and therefore would suit bootcuts much more?

I have both, but being practical, I hate getting soggy ankles in bootcuts!

MrsBonkers · 16/01/2012 23:01

After reading this (and a few others on MN recently) I really need to get some new jeans.
I'm 5'3" and size 18/20
Am I beyond help? :(
If not Jeans, then what do I wear??

bettybat · 16/01/2012 23:23

There's an 11 inch difference between my waist and hips, and I'm 5' 2". Much as I normally love this waist:hip ratio, I look like a troll in skinny jeans. In fact, most jean-trying-on ends up in sobbing in the changing room. On the very rare occasion I get any jeans to fit both, they tend to be straight leg.

It's not even about what looks good anymore; it's about what fits. Or rather, gets over hips and doesn't gape like the Grand Canyon on the waist. Apparently, you don't get to have a big bum and wear jeans :(

Anna1976 · 17/01/2012 00:05

But actually where it's at is not skinny or whatever jeans. It's b0den grey flannel tweed bootcut trousers. Preferably worn with tailored blazer, nice shirt, ecco 4cm heels. and a pashmina and pearl earrings.

(oh god arggh I'm old... whatever happened to my frayed levi 501s, ripped t shirts and holey converse?)

spiderslegs · 17/01/2012 00:20

Anna I hope to God this is a joke - if not even I will pray for you.

spiderslegs · 17/01/2012 00:21

Although I like a tweedy slouch with daps myself.

NannyPlumIsMyMum · 17/01/2012 00:31

Betty me too . I hate Angry jeans shopping . Puts me in a foul mood .

Oh my God, the generalisations on this thread.

I wear skinnies, and this Christmas I brought my Mum 2 pairs of skinnies for Christmas because all she wore was these old bootcut ones or awful flare things and I made her try these on. She looked stunning, the jeans suited her so well. So I brought them for her Grin. I'm so glad I made her try them and she doesn't look "muttony" at all like some people on here say (she is 40+).

Same big BIG generalisations on here - women should dress for their own body shape and preferences, not because some middle-aged women decide skinny jeans are too "young" for them and that they think no other women should wear them just because they can't :).

and yes that is a passive aggressive smile

ExcitedElectrons · 17/01/2012 00:51

*some

spiderslegs · 17/01/2012 00:57

Awful flares it's all to do with how you wear them surely - a bootcut or flare that ends an inch or two above your shoe is awful but a high cut flare with a good, high boot, blouse/shirt & a well cut jacket looks great (with the right hair - not too WAGy or mumsy).

It's how you wear not what you wear.

I bet many women on here who wear bootcuts/flares look alot better than skinny wearers & vice versa depending on HOW they wear them.

ExcitedElectrons · 17/01/2012 01:00

They were awful flares because they were not the right shape for her, they were also too baggy and did not suit her - she was not dressing for her body shape as I clearly stated in my post. Skinny jeans suited her fine.

Another point is that if skinny jeans are supposedly only suited towards thinner people, why are they made in sizes 16+?

spiderslegs · 17/01/2012 01:02

Excited - lovely & egalitarian though that is have you ever seen a 16+ looking great in a pair of skinnies?

iscream · 17/01/2012 01:06

Shannon Tweed is 54 and looks good in these skinny jeans. twitpic.com/show/iphone/80gevd

ExcitedElectrons · 17/01/2012 01:06

It depends on the persons height, size etc. but yes sure I have - my mum for one. Although saying that I agree that some people do look bad in skinny jeans, but not all of them!

spiderslegs · 17/01/2012 01:08

Palazzos, slouchy, may look good on a 16+ but really, I'd counsel a dress or skirt.

spiderslegs · 17/01/2012 01:09

Iscream - she does.

spiderslegs · 17/01/2012 01:10

Really? Your mum is 16+ & looks good in skinnies?

spiderslegs · 17/01/2012 01:13

So she's 50+ & size 16+ & looks good in skinnies? Excited I don't mean to be horrid but unless she's over eight feet tall & on some anti-ageing regime that Madge would like to know about - she's not going to look great. Really.

iscream · 17/01/2012 01:23

I am buying jeans this week, I thought maybe I would get a slim fitting jean, not skin tight looking like painted on ones, but skinny enough to look good with long sweaters and shirts/jackets, and a knee high boot. I also want a pair of straight leg jeans. I have some boot cut, but they make my butt look big. (I think because they are so faded?)

iscream · 17/01/2012 01:24

(I'm 55 and size 12.)

spiderslegs · 17/01/2012 01:43

Right - I've been doing some thinking on this issue & have come to the conclusion it's not a skinnies vs bootcut, it's a size thing - anyone over a size 12 shouldn't really wear denim, it's too unforgiving, not flattering, doesn't hang well.

That's not to say you shouldn't wear trousers - just not jeans, & why would you - there are many better things to wear - jeans are a bit lazy anyway - I rarely wear them - didn't even own a pair until five years ago - they're ok - I quite like them & wear them about once a week.

There are many other things you could be wearing though.

Gavel.

spiderslegs · 17/01/2012 01:44

.

forehead · 17/01/2012 01:49

Girls wear what the hell you want.

The important thing is wearing what suits YOUR shape(iirrespective of your size). If you have shapely legs you can wear skinnies. The fact is that a lot of women don't dress to suit their shape and are slaves to fashion.

spiderslegs · 17/01/2012 01:53

Forehead are you with me or against me?

forehead · 17/01/2012 01:55

Spider, i think that you can wear skinnies if you are over a size 12. A flabby big arse should be covered though .
