AIBU about the government lying about DLA

First time AIBU long time (nah not really) lurker. I also posted this in other topics but thought this would also attract the numbers of viewers that it deserves.

So disabled people asked then ignored about benefit changes.

So the short version is that no one wants the reform of DLA, particularly not the overwhelming number who responded to the governments own consultation.
Also rejected were the proposals to change the way the benefit is assessed, as well as the length of time that people would need to wait before qualifying for the benefit, last but not least rejected was the changes to the rates and the levels of benefit payable.

No apologies for saying this is the true face of compassionate conservatism.

I'm liking your thinking THC. I doubt it will be long before that is arranged to be honest. Wish I could be there in person to see their faces.

TheHumancatapult · 14/01/2012 19:07

molepom . om not normally one for marches etc as its just to tricky but for that i would find a way .

Paraolympics this year .Yet wheekchair users struggle to get around London .One space a bus if ramp works and not a buggy on board no access to tubes be intresting see how they cope have heard rumours they are having to lay on special trasnport for atheletes

molepom · 14/01/2012 19:13

lol, that sounds about right. Make it look good for the tourists but snatch it all away when they've gone home.

TheHumancatapult · 14/01/2012 19:20

no i think it will hit home as teh trasnport just for the athletes not the tourists they seem to forget paraolympics means theres going to be fair amount of disabled tourists

and dont thin it going look good when they start reoporting 25 mins stuck at Straford station on teh train as they forgot to be tehre with the ramp and this was booked in advance not just ad hoc

LadySybilDeChocolate · 14/01/2012 19:49

I bet the other countries taking part in the para olympics will be sooo impressed with how the UK treats their disabled. Hmm Wink

molepom · 14/01/2012 19:58
Grin
LadySybilDeChocolate · 14/01/2012 20:01

Actually, that fact could work very well for people. It needs publicity. Grin

Bump for petition link

Mandy2003 · 15/01/2012 11:48

Last night I put links for the sites and the petition on another forum I go on. But people are asking for a summary of the important points of what's going to the Lords. Does anyone feel like knocking one up?

molepom · 15/01/2012 12:08
  1. No longer be able to claim DLA and Carers allowance 2)No claims allowed for DLA for more than 1 child per household 3)Atos assessing system flawed and banned in several US states 4)ATOS system not fit for purpose 5)disability element of Child Tax Credits being scrapped 6)Middle and lower rates of care and mobility DLA scrapped 7)Disabled will be deemed as mobile as an ablebodied person if they can move forward in their chair for 50m on a flat surface 8)Constant supervision will no longer be regarded as an element of disability - (ADHD, ASD, Autism lot of mental health issues there will loose support)
  2. Atos and PIP costing Gov £300-£500 million per year with a 7 year contract compared to DWP's £14 million a year 10)Government wants to cut DLA claims by 20% on the basis of fraud, which by DWP's own figures is just 0.5% and most of those are errors made by assessors themselves 11)Government have already started introducing PIP systems into DWP's computers at a cost of £1,000,000 dispite the bill having NOT yet PASSED never mind made into LAW.

That's just off the top of my head and only a tiny part of what is being proposed. There are quite litterally hundreds more things that will change.

Petition is to ask Government for a 6 month pause on the reform so it can looked at more closely and other options can be considered.

The basic fact is they've decided to 'save' 20% of DLA costs. Sadly, 20% of the disabilities will not disappear with the cash.

Glitterknickaz · 16/01/2012 13:34

I have disabilities and I'm a carer.
It's not like I have a choice about it.
One does not necessarily preclude the other.

TheHumancatapult · 16/01/2012 13:43

same here glitter but they obviouly decided the £54 a week meant was paying us to much

Mandy2003 · 16/01/2012 13:47

Approaching being OT but bear with me! There was a programme on Radio4 at 11.00 this morning about "getting the Shameless generation back to work". One of the first comments was from a woman, let's call her "Disgusted of Ladywood" who complained that near to her there was a flat occupied by "3 smackheads" who all claim incapacity benefit "and all claim carer's allowance for each other".

This, I suppose, is the reasoning that gets you a government who think it will make them more popular if they say that DLA and Carer's Allowance will no longer be available to the same person?

On the subject of getting our campaign "out there", in yesterday's Mail on Sunday the columnist Suzanne Moore did a piece entitled "The Lords are the Only Decent Politicians Left" stating the situation very succinctly for the lay person!

I would link to it, but, unbelievably she is the only columnist who's link does not appear on the home page and I can't find it even by searching the site. So no reader will find it by accident then Sad

CFSKate · 16/01/2012 14:27

Mandy2003 I could only find it by googling, not by searching the site

Mandy2003 · 16/01/2012 15:23

Thanks CFSKate!! It is good, isn't it - well written and covers everything in a context that people can understand. Shame it's so hard to find, tucked away in a Mail section called RightMinds Shock

HedleyLamarr · 16/01/2012 18:55

Sonia Poulton (I think) has done some good work in the Heil too.

Glitterknickaz · 16/01/2012 22:27

this is my life

molepom · 17/01/2012 20:03

We lost by 16 votes, the changes are going ahead. There may be a few consessions but I'm not holding by breath.

OctonautsOnRepeat · 17/01/2012 21:54

Oh no, when will it start? Sad
We've just got DS1 (ASD) into a nice house, own room etc.
If they cut DLA, CA and HB, we're stuffed and will have to give notice Sad Angry

I feel like they are going to suggest the workhouse next.

molepom · 17/01/2012 22:01

April 2013

On another note...(ha, evil grin)

It's not over yet. We can still fight this and loads of other propsals that will affect us. The DWP have already sent out a form to the public asking for the opinions of the disabled and charities about the propsed PIP and assessments, it shows 13 case studies so you can get a very rough idea of what is to come.

If they want opinions on it.......I say we give it to them. Download the form, print it off, sent it to them and tell tham exactly what you think of it and dont fucking hold back. Question everything you think you are not clear on, ask for details, who's doing the assessments, what qualifications do they have, what medical background do they have, whos going to support those who can not do face to face interview for mental assessments, what is going to be int he mental assessments, what about those who can not leave the house, what tasks are there, what provisions will be taken into account, compare what is better with the original assessments than to the new ones, what's going to add more stress by the new assessment...If we have to have then we will have it on OUR terms with OUR needs kept in mind, not some stupid tick box system.

Hit them with everything you can think of. We'll drown them in paperwork, we WILL get this thing stopped.

cityhobgoblin · 17/01/2012 22:16

Very inspiring , molepom , thank you for excellent fresh tactics
Thank you all for fighting on and for sharing shocking experiences < pretentiously raises fist of solidarity > .
You did brilliantly today ,Glitterknickaz

AmberLeaf · 17/01/2012 22:19

Do you know where to find that form molepom?

worzelswife · 17/01/2012 22:23

I feel so so scared. That's all I can really bear to write at the moment. I'm going to lose my DLA, I won't qualify for PIP. I'm going to lose half my income and there's nothing I can do to stop that. Sad I feel hideously vulnerable.
