AIBU about the government lying about DLA

First time AIBU long time (nah not really) lurker. I also posted this in other topics but thought this would also attract the numbers of viewers that it deserves.

So disabled people asked then ignored about benefit changes.

So the short version is that no one wants the reform of DLA, particularly not the overwhelming number who responded to the governments own consultation.
Also rejected were the proposals to change the way the benefit is assessed, as well as the length of time that people would need to wait before qualifying for the benefit, last but not least rejected was the changes to the rates and the levels of benefit payable.

No apologies for saying this is the true face of compassionate conservatism.

Sad Well I dont know what to say. Disappointed is an understatement.

AmberLeaf · 14/01/2012 08:55

HumanCatapault, the only one person being alllowed to be disabled thing is utterly ridiculous, beyond unfair its just illogical!

molepom · 14/01/2012 08:59

I wonder how many people at MNHQ have signed the petition and read these threads? Or have they chosen to ignore it as well?

Sevenfold · 14/01/2012 09:19

mn hq have not pushed this at all imo.
apart from one post and a stickie. yet they use the fact that they support the ECM campaign, tbh I think it is because we are not the right demographic for the advertisers, we can't afford the expensive stuff and we can't do the holidays.
begs the question why they even have a sn topic on here.
as for the whole CB outrage, I am sorry but I can't cry over someone on 42 grand loosing a benefit

Glitterknickaz · 14/01/2012 09:22

This whole thing needs more mainstream media take up.
BBC are ignoring. Sky News are ignoring.
The Independent did an article in Dec, Polly Toynbee did an article yesterday in the Guardian but there's a massive silence which means that nobody is hearing what we are shouting.

They're more worried about Antony Worrall Thompson nicking cheese or the Child Benefit issue.

molepom · 14/01/2012 09:41

Well, at least we know where we stand.

AbiAbi · 14/01/2012 09:48

Have signed and shared on FB, sorry to see you're not getting enough support for the cause Sad

CFSKate · 14/01/2012 09:51

The Guardian want to hear how your DLA helps you.

Thank you AbiAbi.

molepom · 14/01/2012 09:59

I cant CFS.

I dont own a camcorder, the camera on PC is broken and I cant afford to have it fixed and my phone was broken by DS during a meltdown, I cant afford to replace that either and dont want to claim on house insurance for a poxy old phone.

Dillydaydreaming · 14/01/2012 10:04

It's crap isn't it? My son is autistic with ADHD, Dyspraxia and mild learning difficulties and yet on forst meeting him you'd be forgiven for seeing normality. It's only when ypou spend any length of time with him that you realise he is far from "normal" and in need of support. I am not convinced a gerneral medic would pick that up - it took lots of observations in school and nursery by a whole load of people (speech and language therapists, Occupational therapists, physios, SENCOs etc) before seeing a paediatrician who with the reports and an hour in my son's company did not hesitate to diagnose ASD. It was another 10 months of further observation and assessments before they gave an additional ADHD diagnosis.

I get DLA for my DS and it supports me to work part-time (as opposed to full-time) in order to meet his needs for additional support. I don't get " a free car" as the DM would have people believe.

My DS;s DLA goes into the bank and helps pay the rent, the council tax, the electricity, the gas - all the things which keep a roof over our heads while allowing me to be at home with him before and after school in order to give him the support he needs. He has one to one support in school and would require the same in any after school club putting the costs (even with DLA) out of my reach. So my part time job in school hours (lucky me) is the best option - sadly I will lose that job at the end of February as I will no longer have the work car I don' t work enough hours for the lease car policy and cannot increase them. As I cannot do my job without a car it leaves me stranded - and I can't afford to buy one either.

Agree with " the govt set this up ..worry the mc about losing their cb so they wouldn't give a hoot about disabled people losing their money" .
You are bang on molepom about MNHQ ignoring this . Also strongly agree " sn is the new black"

I usually try to ignore the details about people doing well out of the grim inequalities in the UK as I hate to feel "set against" "other" groups in society & think of it as all part of the same system of deliberate injustice & a distraction to the struggle for socialist revolution Grin but I nearly burst hearing an MP on The World At One yesterday saying her constituents deserved compassion as it was "hard for them to give up a certain lifestyle once they'd got used to it " - she means those with 2 earners of over 40,000 pa...

To Winter is Coming wanting to do more on these issues , I would sa -with greatest respect to molpeom & all tstriving to change - I don't think petitioning representatives of a system designed to strangle effective change will do as much as trying to overturn the systems would . Most unions work to the Labour Party agenda rather than true socialism & it's hard for actual socialists to be elected within them , hence may workers & unemployed being repeatedly let down by the unions .

Would recommend investigating the harder left parties and coalitions of Labour , far left , Greens & anarchists , all doing solid work in anti cuts groups . I belong to one comprised of SWP, Labour , Respect, Green members - 3 years of action so far and no disagreements all .

The Coalition of Resistance ( sorry , new hard drive not letting me do links ) is not the most radical group but making the right noises - I stupidly forgot to post about its emergency conference in London today . The Morning Star and the SWP site list all anticuts action each week & ones such as picketing of DWP on the issue of the cuts to disability benefits - in my area we leafleted apeole signing on at the Jobccentre & talked to them about the issues , ditto with local media

Have MS myself and have fallen out of the benefits system altogether atm as the repeated tests and forms so hard when you're ill - without my dh I have no doubt I would be on the streets by now , & am certain it's happening to others

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 14/01/2012 10:25

We get DLA for DS2 and for my OH.
Both have incurable, and in OH's case, degenerative, conditions.

I cant tell you how worried I am about this. DS's disabilites are not as severe as many of the children of posters on MN. If we lost his DLA we could get by but he would suffer. As statutory and charitable services are being removed parents are being expected to use DLA to pay for therapy and respite services (NHS not being degraded? Really?). Replacing the things he breaks etc would be problematic but he gets low rate so we would not suffer in the way that children with complex and severe needs would.
I work with these children, make no mistake, they will suffer.

The thought of losing my OH's DLA terrifies me. Utterly. So much that I cant really post about it much as it forces me to confront how much our lives will change. I fear becoming that sad, isolated couple, living on out of work benefits, living in a cold and dark house and never going out whilst our children become labled as 'young carers' and cant wait to escape.

Melodramatic isnt it?

I listened to the Today programme on Friday. It was stated clearly and without correction or challenge that those on the 'lower rung of DLA receive just short of £90 per week'

So how many people would have listened to that and thought '£90 a week! for having a minor disability!!! no wonder they want to reduce it/get rid of it'

The low rate of DLA is less than half that. If your receive both mobility and care at low rates you will get less than £40. That is ONE cab ride to hospital and back if you are lucky. So one week's money could be gone in one hit.
For the record it would cover one pair of eczema pjs and some cotton socks from the company I used to get DS's things from.

I would ask that people contact the Today programme and ask that they correct the mistake they made on friday. news.bbc.co.uk/today/hi/

It may seem a small point but it all adds to the perception of DLA claiments being showered with money for no good reason. Interestingly they didnt mention that it was NOT an out of work benefit.

Done MrsDevere

TheLightPassenger · 14/01/2012 10:38

I've had enough of this country. No money for wheelchairs, therapies for disabled children and adults, cutbacks to the most vulnerable. Yet all of a sudden suggesting there is enough money for CB for higher rate taxpayers.

every few years there's a new "hate" group in the media - new age travellers, immigrants, paedophiles, and now it's the disabled portrayed as scroungers.

molepom · 14/01/2012 10:43

I wonder who they are going to pick on next?

Single mothers - done
disabled - done
travellers - done
immigrants - done
Cancer patients - done

the dead?

Glitterknickaz · 14/01/2012 10:54

There's also enough to seriously raise the olympic budget. Whilst we'll be left struggling to pay our utilities and the activities my children do to help their development will go out of the window too.

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 14/01/2012 10:57

This really does remind me of the early 90s when I had two small children and me and OH were not together. I was a single mother in a council flat and I amazed to learn from the media that I was a parasite (yep they used that word) and the reason for society being in trouble. The moral aspect was a red herring, it was the money they were worried about.

At the time there was a £6 per week single parent supplement to Supplementary Benefit (Income Support). They removed this for all new claiments. It was such a small amount to the governement it was an obvious attempt to punish single mothers (they didnt speak of LP in those days).

There was a Tory party conference at the time and the bile spewed shocked the public. The public who had been nodding their heads and sucking their teeth at the Single Mother Problem up until then.
It didnt help that a fair few Tory MPs were found to have created some Single Mothers by shagging their secretaries etc.

(An interesting parallel with our current Leader who was a parent to a disabled child but none of the financial difficulties that came along with the position)

My only faint hope is that the public will become so disgusted that there will be a backlash as there was in the 90s and Tories were forced to introduced the precurser (?) to WTC i.e. Family Credit.

The only decent thing the fuckers did. It allowed LP to work part time, was a gateway benefit to HB and other essentials.

WTF are #frothers in politics.

Too Many Cuts blog.

There is a hashtag on Twitter, #frothers. Many people, including well known MNers are using it. Three of us have been banned by Twitter, in my case three times probably for using the #frothers hashtag.

So I've started promoting it on my Arsebook page and initiating debate with my dcs and their friends. Response has been largely positive. Please don't think we don't care: we do.

I'm hopeful that Twitter reactivates my account so I can continue to help the campaign.

Glitterknickaz · 14/01/2012 11:38

I'm wondering about a frothers post regarding the media silence vs programmes like saints & scroungers?
