AIBU about the government lying about DLA

First time AIBU long time (nah not really) lurker. I also posted this in other topics but thought this would also attract the numbers of viewers that it deserves.

So disabled people asked then ignored about benefit changes.

So the short version is that no one wants the reform of DLA, particularly not the overwhelming number who responded to the governments own consultation.
Also rejected were the proposals to change the way the benefit is assessed, as well as the length of time that people would need to wait before qualifying for the benefit, last but not least rejected was the changes to the rates and the levels of benefit payable.

No apologies for saying this is the true face of compassionate conservatism.

Thanks for the links , OP ....the last decade has felt like wading through a thick swamp of black propaganda reminiscent of 1930s Germany ( and New Labour were guilty of it , too )

molepom · 10/01/2012 16:12

The media have completly shut down everything to do with raising this awareness via witter, which just proves to me that the government are in contol of that and know that no-one agrees with it, or more to the point, will be a huge step to throwing them out of Parliament. Cunts.

molepom · 10/01/2012 16:13

witter?

twitter.

Notthefullshilling · 10/01/2012 16:14

cityhobgoblin Your welcome, I agree about New Labour I would say though (not to excuse or defend.) that the roots of this current legislation go way back to early 1990's

It's in the Dasily Mail!! and they've supported Spartacusreport on Twitter apparently.

I'm going to try to get the link to the petition published on their comments board..

Wish me luck.

Notthefullshilling · 10/01/2012 16:39

Good luck molepom!

I am shocked though at the very thought of the Daily Hell supporting this, sounds like reverse psychology

OP posts:
molepom · 10/01/2012 16:44

Read it! I'm as shocked as you are as are some people who actually commented on it.

clicky

bochead · 10/01/2012 17:25

The changes to kids DLA is scary.

Using my own son as an example - instead of 4 different consultant written medical reports + school reports (including his statement of sen, and the reports that supported this) summarising the results of 3 years of investgation, suddenly a generalist medic (ATOS) will be able to assess a kid who went thru 3 schools and a behavioral unit by the end of year 2 in 30 minutes with a "standard form". WTF??????

The current 57 page form took me 3 months to comlplete, partly because I had to gather professional evidence for every statement I made. DS NEEDS that money! It pays for stuff the NHS/LEA can't provide.

The contact a family website has details for other parents of the new assessment.

For adults and children the fraud rate is 0.5% and suspect most of that is VERY clever adult claims, a drop in the ocean considering what bankers have scammed from tax payers. Asearch on DLA on this sites special needs forum will show those who aren't aware just how upset we get at having to claim this benefit in the first place, it reduces most to tears - partly because it FORCES you to see just how disadvantaged compared to their peers a successful dla child claimant really is.

I'm so glad that after months of the media bashing the disabled adn the benefits they receive to function day to day the truth is finally coming out.

cityhobgoblin · 10/01/2012 17:36

Best of luck , molepom !

Thank you for points about children's assessments , bochead - sorry for your grim fight for basic needs

Agree with you Notthefullshillingabout the Tory roots of the changes to welfare & assessments ( and about the Mail and its use of reverse psychology )

Rollersara · 10/01/2012 18:01

Wow, for once I am impressed with a DM article! Even recognising that DLA is not income related and picking apart the finer points of PIP. Interested to see where Spartacus goes next...

carernotasaint · 10/01/2012 18:03

Does anyone else think the DM might have been threatened with a lawsuit we dont know about, hence the about face.

molepom · 10/01/2012 18:09

I think that the DM recognises that if they brush this under the carpet or be seen to support Scameron on this particular topic, they could land themselves in very hot water as well as loosing a vast majority of readers.

Kladdkaka · 10/01/2012 18:10

I would add to what Bochead says, that there are probably more people not claiming DLA who should be receiving it than there are claiming it falsely. I'm autistic, my daughter is autistic, my husband, my nephew, most likely my mum and 1 of my brothers. None of us receive any. I tried to claim several times but gave up because I just couldn't cope with the process.

bochead · 10/01/2012 18:14

I'm just very angry that they are taking what I view as a "cheat proof process" and replacing it with nonsense that will benefit noone. Tax payers money will be wasted.

I haven't studied the adult changes as much but suspect a similar pattern of "nonsense" will emerge with some of the biggest losers being the most vulnerable. NHS consultants don't put their reps on the line for the undeserving, some groups such as those with autism or the mentally ill can't be accurately assessed by a total stranger who is not expert in their condition in 30 mins. For adults I suspect the fraud rate will actually increase 10 fold under the new proposals.

dcisatwunt · 10/01/2012 18:17

Hopefully dc and his cronies will do an about face.

Have namechanged to honour our leader.

worzelswife · 10/01/2012 18:21

I bloody love the people who put together the report.

I'm flipping terrified. I get DLA but I have two invisible conditions, including one that lots of doctors don't think exists (M.E) or gets better if you take a bit of exercise now and again (wets self laughing. I've been unable to get out of bed all day today because I did 4 minutes of gentle cycling yesterday. I've only eaten dry bread today and a small bowl of cereal and it's 6pm.) Honestly, if this goes through I think I'm screwed. I can't afford to live without DLA and I cannot get a job. It is impossible. I've had a look at the criteria for getting PIP such as it is at present and I wouldn't be deemed seriously ill enough. I spend 90% of my day in bed - how is that not ill?

So the Spartacus report has given me hope, although I do still doubt anyone in power is going to bloody listen.

molepom · 10/01/2012 18:36

Twitter keeps crashing because of the retweets on #spartacusreport. Hope that's a good sign.

Ineedalife · 10/01/2012 18:40

When my Dd3 was diagnosed with Autism last year we were told that we should apply for DLA and that the psychiatrist who diagnosed her would be more than happy to do her part of the forms.

But do you know what I read about filling the forms in and it has put me off, I am sure that my DD qualifies and we need the money but I can't go through the trauma of filling in the forms.

molepom · 10/01/2012 18:42

You need to do it Ineedalife, yes it's daunting and time consuming but it can be worth it. Your DD will need extra support both in and out of school (ds is autistic as well as ADHD), but these services and supports are not cheap.

Mandy2003 · 10/01/2012 18:50

YY worzelswife - I am in exactly the same position as you healthwise. If I am ever "called-up" by ATOS, well...

DLA makes life bearable for myself and my DS. It was conceived as being a benefit to provide for the extra costs involved through being disabled, surely being unable to work more than a couple of hours a week outside the home is a cost of being disabled?

And my award says "Indefinite". Not "Indefinite Till We Move the Goalposts".

I just think it is sick that this present government keeps bitching that everyone should get a a job when they have admitted that one-third of the UK's jobs have disappeared due to immigration. I am NOT being racist in any way, this is a FACT that has just been released by a government survey.

NinkyNonker · 10/01/2012 18:58

It horrifies me, to be honest. I don't claim, my mum does but could survive without it but bloody hell. She is very militant, works tirelessly with disabled charities (esp for amputees) and worked on this press release. I wish I could say it surprised me but not much does any more.

She is also working hard on the support of servicemen. The govt have failed to supply the care promised to servicemen who have lost limbs, instead promising them they will go to the top of the already over burdened NHS lists. Local health authorities can't fulfill these promises especially with the budget cuts without pulling/cutting support to 'normal' amputees, leaving them limbless in many cases. And even then many are struggling to meet the needs of the ex-servicemen. Appalling.

Glitterknickaz · 10/01/2012 19:05

I'm still in shock at the Daily Hate fighting our corner for once.
I'm also appalled that despite the best efforts of many, despite the support of Boris Johnson and John Prescott among others that there has been complete silence on the Spartacus Report in all other mainstream media.

I'd expect at least the Guardian or the Independent to take it up.

It's too late for us, we're still going to lose £200 a month now the Lords have voted in favour of the cut.... but the govt want to screw over people with disabilities a hell of a lot more than that.

Oh, and I'm DISGUSTED that Ed Miliband has had nothing to say too.

molepom · 10/01/2012 19:39

The Guardian has written about it, but staying impatial.

worzelswife · 11/01/2012 11:28

I feel so let down that the BBC hasn't covered it (as far as I've seen). It is a huge story.

molepom · 11/01/2012 18:13

DM didnt post my link but........

Apparently Loards have defeated the Gov on 2 parts of the welfare reform, one being the time limit for ESA and the other about disabled chidren - what I'm not sure but the second I find out I'll let you all know.
