Washing the kitchen bin lid in the dishwasher

Just caught DH putting the kitchen-bin lid in the dishwasher along with the usual plates and cutlery. AIBU to think this is gross?

(He says there are too many nooks and crannies to easily clean it himself - it's a Brabantia lid not one of those swing-top lids - and that the high temperature of the dishwasher kills all the germs.

I do actually wipe the lid (fairly!) regularly so it's not the first time it's been cleaned, by the way - this is just DH's attempt at a 'deep clean' :)

Cant see a problem with it. By the time boiling hot water and detergent have cleaned everything in the machine, everything will be spotless and germ free.

sheeplikessleep · 06/12/2011 11:02

ooh, let me know how it gets on! is it a stainless steel and plastic push down jobby? sounds a good idea, but very aware of the sticker in mine saying 'no harsh abrasives' and worried it wouldn't stand up to a full on dishwasher wash!

mousysantamouse · 06/12/2011 11:04

hot water and harsh detergent will get rid of all germs.
but if it is not stainless steel but some sort of galvanised metal I would worry about the finish.

EmpressOfTheSevenSnowflakes · 06/12/2011 11:05

I think it's a good idea. We put our bin's inner bucket in the dishwasher once a month, but it goes in with the washing up bowls instead of the everyday stuff.

Ifancyashandy · 06/12/2011 11:06

Always do this. Not dead yet!

aldiwhore · 06/12/2011 11:08

Its a good idea. YABU... dirty plates are 'gross', its the same waste on a bin lid. Everything goes in our dishwasher, even wellies with dog poo on them, hot wash and a clean afterwards and there is no poo lurking anywhere.

Maybe IABU.

squeakytoy · 06/12/2011 11:17

I think I would draw the line at putting dog poo in the dishwasher. Shock

wheredidiputit · 06/12/2011 11:18

YANBU.

I wouldn't have a problem if he had done without you plates in it then I wouldn't have a problem.

sheeplikessleep · 06/12/2011 11:19

So can anyone say with experience of putting a Brabantia bin lid in the dishwasher that it won't damage it?

SpagBollyandtheIvy · 06/12/2011 11:21

Dishwasher sterilises things quite effectively. I put pet bowls, breast pump bits, compost caddy, all sorts in it.

I too would draw the line at dog poo I think though?! :o

Ghoulwithadragontattoo · 06/12/2011 11:22

You see this doesn't sound very hygienic to me. I wouldn't dream of putting the bin lid in with my dirty pots. I would wash it separately with a cloth which is not used for crockery or better still a paper towel. You wouldn't just stick the bin lid in with the plates normally would you?

aldiwhore · 06/12/2011 11:25

Ghoul I do wellies and bin lids separately honest!

But you wash all sorts of things in a sink and its not rank or gross, and if you clean your dishwasher regularly its no different, in fact, probably a little MORE sterile.

I can't touch dog poo without being physically sick, so if I used the sink I'd have to clear up vomit as well!

NotnOtter · 06/12/2011 11:26

I do this!

Heleninahandcart · 06/12/2011 11:31

No problem. When it needs an extreme clean it goes in the dishwasher. I was tempted, but did draw the line at the toilet seat. Blush

squeakytoy · 06/12/2011 11:33

I know someone who once put their ornamental candles into the dishwasher to get the dust off them..... Grin

Byeckersitsapropercrimbolike · 06/12/2011 11:33

I am gutted i never thought to do this

aldiwhore · 06/12/2011 11:34

Haha squeakytoy I have done this, but please use a LOW TEMPERATURE, cleaning wax out of the crannies is nigh on impossible. Nice shiney new dishwasher though! Blush

Bonsoir · 06/12/2011 11:36

There is nothing gross about putting the kitchen bin lid in the dishwasher - I wash my Brabantia touch bin lid in the dishwasher at least twice a week. Bin lids are very unhygienic, so a nice hot wash in the DW is a good way to disinfect them.

ExpectoPatronum · 06/12/2011 11:36

I've put my mop-head through the dishwasher before now. Wouldn't be bothered about the bin lid, but I would fear for its shiny chrome finish.

(Better than last week in this house, when I caught my dad cleaning round the rim of the bin lid with the yellow and green sponge / scrubby thing that I use for plates.) Shock

Bonsoir · 06/12/2011 11:37

I put toothbrushes in the dishwasher!

MilkNoSugarPlease · 06/12/2011 11:41

We put the Antilop seat in the dishwasher and frankly that can be worse then the flipping bin!

Thingiebob · 06/12/2011 11:43

Cripes! How big are your dishwashers?

Bonsoir · 06/12/2011 11:43

Yes - I used to put DD's Baby Björn booster loo seat in the dishwasher. And the little step that she used for the loo and basin.

PurpleWithaBlueBun · 06/12/2011 11:44

This is genius, and will reduce my antibacterial spray consumption!

MissTapestry · 06/12/2011 11:44

We used to put the ponies' stirrup irons and bits in the dishwasher the day before a show. Shiny sparkly lazy! Grin
